GODIVA28 Posted August 23, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 23, 2009 Hi there, I understand that there is a $5 cover for the speciality eating but does one add on top of this at the end of the meal when you sign the slip? I do not have a problem with tipping but want to make sure we do not do the wrong thing or look mean. Many thanks.
brian_uk Posted August 23, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 23, 2009 Just back today...... We ate in Aquilina and Prime C 8 times on our trip and were only expected to leave a total of $10.........well worth it. Brian
mstrc1 Posted August 23, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 23, 2009 On our trip earlier this year we ate at the specialty restaurants and did leave a small tip each time. There are people who do not and even those who object to the $5.00. We tip according to the service we get and most of the time it was excellent. When the meal is over they give you the slip to sign and you do have the option then. Enjoy and have a good cruise.
world~citizen Posted August 23, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 23, 2009 The food and service is, or was exceptional in both specialty dining venues when we sailed. I can say with confidence that if you wish to tip extra, it would not be a faux pas. Smooth sailing...
piscean Posted August 24, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 24, 2009 Hi We have eaten in both restaurants and are more than happy to sign the slip when presented at the end of the meal. Enjoy
greeneg Posted August 24, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 24, 2009 I've always added a little to the requested tip as a way of saying "Thank you for a very nice evening", which is what we have always had in the Specialty Restaurants.
captainK Posted August 24, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 24, 2009 It is a 'suggested gratuity' and it is worth that and more. We just returned from the Quest yesterday and ate in Prime C and Aqualina a total of 7 times throughout the 2 weeks. The service and food were excellent and the ambiance equally so, provided we were not seated next to brian uk. Just kidding Brian and Jean. DougYWG Posted August 24, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 24, 2009 The service and food were excellent and one evening the view was terrific too - we got a table in the stern of the ship with a view looking aft at the wake receding in the distance as the sun went down. Lovely. We were up there several times and were happy to sign for the ten bucks but left something extra in cash too.
JennAngel9 Posted August 24, 2009 #9 Share Posted August 24, 2009 I just noticed, when pulling the documents together for our upcoming Journey cruise, that they mentioned an $8 upcharge for Kobe Beef in Prime. Does this exist? If so, it would certainly be the lowest upcharge for kobe/waygu I have ever experienced anywhere! Also, would anyone care to speculate whether leaving $25 at the end of a meal in specialty dining would be on the high/low/middle of the tip spectrum? This is our first AZ cruise and we would appreciate any guidance on the tipping social norms.

I use the 15 per cent rule, which is to say: what would I normally pay for the dinner in a comparable venue and tip %15 of the value. Some think thats not enough. Others fume at the thought of $5 pp. For me it ends up being $20-25. It really is up to you though. Smooth sailing...

world~citizen Posted August 26, 2009 #13 Share Posted August 26, 2009 Ditto World citizen Where else do you get this kind of great service and food? Of course there is that cover charge (cruise fare).:) I agree 100%. The food and service is remarkable. It is a pleasure to pay a gratuity in those dining rooms. Smooth sailing... GODIVA28 Posted August 30, 2009 Author #14 Share Posted August 30, 2009 Thank you all for your help and suggestions. I will feel easier this cruise around. We were on Celebrity Millenium and felt slightly uncomfortable with the 'service' in the speciality dining and were really not sure how much to leave as a tip. I could not even guage from their reactions if we were seen as okay, mean or over generous!!

Does this exist? If so, it would certainly be the lowest upcharge for kobe/waygu I have ever experienced anywhere! If I am not mistaken, the term Kobe beef is now used more generally - meaning "Kobe style" beef and not necessarily from Kobe, Japan. Hence the lower upcharge for Kobe beef on A. It is much like the term champagne - not all of it is from the Champagne region of France, although the French understandably object to that usage. If someone knows otherwise, please correct me. jrkfrk Posted August 30, 2009 #18 Share Posted August 30, 2009 We were on Journey earlier this month and ate in the speciality restaurants several times. The various "cuts" of Kobe beef are no longer on the menu at Prime, however, Kobe beef "sliders" are - with no additional upcharge. They were excellent (two in an order), and a fun treat :D. As an aside, is it proper punctuation to put the period before or after the smiley face? Just wondering. . . . . Fran
