quickrate Posted February 12, 2016 #26 Share Posted February 12, 2016 I would agree that Carnival needs to invest, if they have not already, in a system that better cleans the air in the casino area, especially when it is next to or in-between a high traffic area. However, I highly doubt the casinos will ever go smoke free. If the casinos went smoke free, I believe the revenue the casino would receive from those that previously avoided the casino because of the smoke would not exceed the revenue loss from the smokers. Now that they have proven that second hand smoke is very dangerous to others, all it is going to take is a few people winning lawsuits, and it will no longer be allowed in public places. I'm an ex smoker, I understand that cigarette smokers keep arguing their rights, but when your rights affect other people's health, then it becomes an infringement on others rights to good health. quickrate Posted February 12, 2016 #27 Share Posted February 12, 2016 The casino and selling alcohol is the two biggest revenue makers for any cruise line. They aren't going to ban smoking from the casino where those two biggies are being offered. Money comes before anything for any business. Carnival does not care if you go in and gamble or not as they know someone will not care if there's smoke inside or not. At least Carnival listened to us when we did not want smoking on balconies--it didn't cost them anything. If they ban smoking in all indoor space, smokers will still gamble. guarantee it! They will just have to step outside to light up! Is it fair to endanger the health of all the employees who work in the casino? Pat
TaDaaa! Posted February 12, 2016 #28 Share Posted February 12, 2016 Just returned from my 13th Carnival Cruise. It's refreshing that smoking is limited to one side of the ship on one or two outside decks. It's easy to stay away from those areas . . . BUT the casino was so smokey that it was hard to spend much time there. To navigate from one end of the ship to the other skirting around or through the casino was the only way to get through - and the smoke was just awful. Don't they know smoking and second hand smoke is dangerous as well as unpleasant??? Carnival - PLEASE install some exhaust fans to get the smoke out of there. I only went to the casino 4 times in 6 days - won my money and got the heck out because it was just too smokey. Wish they would designate a large area as non-smoking that includes tables in the casino . . . OH well - Carnival's loss - I didn't get a chance to go back and lose all the money I won. I don't think Carnival reads Cruise Critic. ;)
Scirocco Breeze Posted February 12, 2016 #29 Share Posted February 12, 2016 My partner has bad asthma. People die of bad asthma and cigarette smoke is a massive trigger for an attack. I am going to be more than a bit angry if our holiday is ruined by second hand cigarette smoke. There's no excuse these days not to have a ban in indoor spaces. It works perfectly well in the UK. quickrate Posted February 12, 2016 #30 Share Posted February 12, 2016 And non smokers can stop frequenting our smoking areas or go on Celebrity. So what about the employees that have no choice? Not fair to endanger their health. Need a cigarette, take it outdoors. Pat

TaDaaa! Posted February 12, 2016 #32 Share Posted February 12, 2016 Celebrity has had no indoor smoking for several years now and they seem to be doing just fine. So pleasant to be able to go to the casino and not have to deal with the stench and resulting watery eyes. So why put yourself though the pain of watery eyes and the stench (as you put it) by sailing Carnival again?
TaDaaa! Posted February 12, 2016 #33 Share Posted February 12, 2016 Not really. Only a small percent of people smoke now, and with all the knowledge we have this statement has been proven inaccurate numerous times. Ban all smoking inside, and people will still gamble. That "small percent" you refer to is about 19-20% in the US. Hardly small. And in case you haven't noticed, quite a few foreigners cruise as well and they come from countries with a higher percentage of smoking population. TaDaaa! Posted February 12, 2016 #34 Share Posted February 12, 2016 I agree...My trips on the Conquest and Glory were pretty bad. If they don't want to get rid of smoking then imo they should move the casino so it's not so mid ship and pretty much a req to pass through. The casino on MSC Divina was all the way at the front of the ship and iirc there is no smoking allowed there. But the placement was better so that you could avoid the smoke if you wanted to.(If they allowed it) I would avoid the casino on Carnival but they also do trivia there at the casino stage which imo is a terrible place to have it. If they moved the trivia then I wouldn't mind the smoking so much because I could avoid it easier. No one is required to go through the casino. Feel free to go up to deck 9, traverse north/south, and back down again.......that is if you're really worried about your health and not just controlling what others do. ryanedoyle Posted February 12, 2016 #35 Share Posted February 12, 2016 My wife and I use to really enjoy spending time in the casino. We love the table games and would spend hours a day playing. On our last cruise the smoke was so bad that after we played for 1 hour we left and never came back. I agree that the smoke in the casino seems to be FAR worse than it was before they tightened up on smoking.
grandmarnnurse Posted February 12, 2016 #36 Share Posted February 12, 2016 I have cruised many times over the years, on both RCCL and CCL. I, too, feel that the cruise lines should invest in better ventilation in designated smoking areas. But who are we kidding--second hand smoke travels--and we all know by now the seriousness of the health risks involved. As an RN, I cannot tell you the misery a lifetime of smoking will do to an individual. I am amazed that with all this knowledge, that anyone still smokes! And believe me, I like to have a good time--but since when does smoking and endangering everyone around you constitute "fun". Bravo to any cruise line that already bans indoor smoking!! They will just have to step outside to light up! Is it fair to endanger the health of all the employees who work in the casino? Yep! We went on two cruises with Celebrity after they restricted indoor smoking, but before we quit smoking. No biggie. We just stepped outside for a smoke when we wanted to. So why put yourself though the pain of watery eyes and the stench (as you put it) by sailing Carnival again? Easy. When we go on Carnival we just stay out of the casino and area immediately surrounding it as much as possible. When we go on Celebrity we enjoy the casinos. elliair Posted February 12, 2016 #40 Share Posted February 12, 2016 Yeah those two don't make much sense. If they only care about money then they should care if you gamble or not. If they took it away then the ppl who care about smoke and the ppl who don't care about smoke are still going to go. I've never seen them advertise a smoke free slot tournament, or a smoke free poker tournament. They advertise big time to sell you alcohol. Every ponce in a while on a cruise they'll have a smoke free night. I don't gamble, if I wanted to lose money I'd go to the casino a mile from my house. It isn't smoke free totally. tkportersat Posted February 12, 2016 #44 Share Posted February 12, 2016 Well, not entirely true...my parents will no longer cruise now because they can't smoke on their balconies, I'm sure they aren't the only ones. So there is some loss as my parents also gambled and racked up a healthy bar bill as well. . At least Carnival listened to us when we did not want smoking on balconies--it didn't cost them anything. tkportersat Posted February 12, 2016 #48 Share Posted February 12, 2016 (edited) Every Casino I have ever visited - Las Vegas, cruises, Oklahoma, Louisiana - smoking is allowed. I go on a cruise about once a year and one of the on land casinos about once a year. The smoke has never bothered me unless a smoker plunks down and aims their cigarette my direction. So then I get up and relocate. Look, I hate smoking overall - it has taken such a hold over my parents they will no longer cruise because they can't smoke on the balcony. So pretty much ruining what was a traditional family vacation for us. But if you don't like it and you know it is there, avoid it. All the non-smokers cheered when it was removed from balconies and now are calling for more, you get an inch and want a mile. Some won't be happy until all the smokers are kicked off the ship. Just returned from my 13th Carnival Cruise. It's refreshing that smoking is limited to one side of the ship on one or two outside decks. It's easy to stay away from those areas . . . soopamanluva Posted February 12, 2016 #49 Share Posted February 12, 2016 What really sucks is you go back to your cabin and your clothes reek of smoke. That's what I don't like, it smells horrible.
molme Posted February 12, 2016 #50 Share Posted February 12, 2016 (edited) On Princess cruises, formal night is smoke-free in the casino. It is really nice to at least have one or two nights that non-smokers can enjoy the casino. Maybe Carnival could take note and do the same Edited February 12, 2016 by molme
