Carnival - are you listening?

I have cruised many times over the years, on both RCCL and CCL. I, too, feel that the cruise lines should invest in better ventilation in designated smoking areas. But who are we kidding--second hand smoke travels--and we all know by now the seriousness of the health risks involved. As an RN, I cannot tell you the misery a lifetime of smoking will do to an individual. I am amazed that with all this knowledge, that anyone still smokes! And believe me, I like to have a good time--but since when does smoking and endangering everyone around you constitute "fun". Bravo to any cruise line that already bans indoor smoking!!

So how will you handle Getaway?

I think this depends on the ship. As a non-smoker (anti-smoker), I have not been too bothered by the smoking sections in the casino on the Breeze, Magic or Valor but I didn't like it, and moved around, and left, when it got too bad. I do not care to smell like smoke and end up showering and washing my hair before bed, and do laundry on board to remove the smell from my clothing.

Personally I would like to see NO SMOKING in all inside venues, but it is difficult for them to try to make everyone happy. What concerns me is the health risk to employees, because they don't have the opportunity to just leave and have to deal with it for 12 hours. Most smokers are accustomed to being kicked outside to indulge their habit and many smokers I know don't even smoke in their own homes.

when people drink, they don't affect someone else's health.

Tell that to all the people who have been in accidents because of people drunk driving.

Also, look at the Revel in Atlantic City that filed for bankruptcy twice and finally closed. A 100% non-smoking casino was unable to make any money.

Eventually the casinos will be smoke free as the cabins , balconies and all food areas now are .

Until that day , Carnival should improve the ventilation systems and institute 2 days (minimum) non-smoking on

7 day cruises . They have this on HAL and I was pleasantly surprised how the stench was almost fully gone .

I agree that the ventilation system should be upgraded. I enjoy the casino and just booked a cruise on the Dream with a casino rate, but will not be spending much time in there if it's as smoke filled as our last cruise on the Liberty. Most of the smoke on that cruise was coming from the crowd around the band playing in that area and not from those who were gambling.

On Princess cruises, formal night is smoke-free in the casino. It is really nice to at least have one or two nights that non-smokers can enjoy the casino. Maybe Carnival could take note and do the same

I know I would spend more time in the casino if it were smoke free. The ONLY reason I don't gamble for more than a few minutes is because of the smoke. I think it is easier for a smoker to go for longer periods of not smoking than an non smoker is able to stay in a smokey atmosphere.

Also, I hate smelling like a smoker.

One thing I noticed this last cruise on the Paradise, it was almost like a very spa natural scented air freshner was being pumped into the casino. It was nice and helped a lot. I was so sick of chain smokers on that cruise. One right after another...wow give your lungs and mine a 30 second break

No one is required to go through the casino. Feel free to go up to deck 9, traverse north/south, and back down again.......that is if you're really worried about your health and not just controlling what others do.

Like I said....they hold trivia there. So either my vacation is negatively affected because I can't do what I enjoy or because I have to deal with smokers.

We're talking about cruising... Idt that really applies.

As I've said, I cruise often, and I deal with it, but with all the known health risks to not only the smoker, but everyone else around them, smoking should be banned from all inside areas, if not totally on all ships. Talk to me about your rights as a smoker, Ruthless, when you are diagnosed with COPD or lung ca. Yes, it is your right to harm yourself, but not others around you. And that is why it should be banned. Sorry if I offended you, but it's time to face the facts of smoking and its risks. As for the comment about alcohol being harmful to ones health: drinking in moderation is not harmful to the average person, and certainly not harmful to those standing near you.

If that is true then why are there people stating that the smoke in the casino is so bad?

Because that's where the MAJORITY of smokers on board congregate just so they can smoke. They believe it's their territory because it's allowed by Carnival. I don't go in the casino because of the smoke. Gives me more money to spend on shore - I buy those cheap Bloody Mary's on shore. :D

I haven't been to Vegas in a few months- are the casinos there all smoke free now?

No, they are not. There are only no smoking sections and you have to walk through the smoke to get to the food venues which is the only reason I step foot in the casinos. It's annoying but at least there's no smoking allowed in the restaurants.

Just returned from my 13th Carnival Cruise. It's refreshing that smoking is limited to one side of the ship on one or two outside decks. It's easy to stay away from those areas . . . BUT the casino was so smokey that it was hard to spend much time there. To navigate from one end of the ship to the other skirting around or through the casino was the only way to get through - and the smoke was just awful. Don't they know smoking and second hand smoke is dangerous as well as unpleasant??? Carnival - PLEASE install some exhaust fans to get the smoke out of there. I only went to the casino 4 times in 6 days - won my money and got the heck out because it was just too smokey. Wish they would designate a large area as non-smoking that includes tables in the casino . . . OH well - Carnival's loss - I didn't get a chance to go back and lose all the money I won.

I'm sure Carnival called a special meeting of the board of directors to figure out how they are going to survive since you won some money! My guess is the number of big time gamblers who smoke far outweigh those who will not gamble at all because of smoking REVENUE wise. If it made financial sense to exclude smokers from parts of the Casino, rest assured they would. IMO is doesn't, and they won't. Gambling non-smokers probably would not even gamble enough for Carnival to break even installing a ventilation system.

Ha ha ha . . . just saying' it would be so much more pleasant and healthy with no smoke in the casino. Many have said they wished smoking was banned in all indoor areas - and I agree that would be a great solution. Smokers can go outside to smoke or choose not to smoke and stay inside. Non-smokers don't have a choice - the casino is smokey and the only way to avoid the smoke is to avoid the casino entirely - which is really unfair.

I remember some time ago that John Heald posted about knowing that there was a problem with ventilation and them looking into new systems to fix it. Not sure if anything came of it or not.

Bottom line for Carnival is profit, as it should be. Banning smoking in the casino would impact profits. That simple.
The same rational was used for smoking in cabins and then smoking on balconies . There used to be smoking in all the bars and restaurants . The owners screamed bloody murder when the restrictions were proposed . Changes came . With ships it won't be government but the competition .

Smokers enjoy the casinos . You won't be enjoying them for long . :)

Carnival has designated smoking areas. If you don't want to be exposed to the smoke don't go to these areas. Problem solved and if they thought that banning smoking in the casino would increase profits they would have already went that way. I don't like having dinner next to someone who smells like they took a bath in perfume but I don't expect them to ban it in the mdr. And yes I have allergic reaction to a lot of popular perfumes so it is a health issue for me.

ALL the casinos in Deadwood, SD are smoke free. They wanted everyone to think they would lose money....wrong...the numbers don't lie. The casinos made smoking rooms with a separate entrance from outside. Most have heaters and AC, tables and chairs. They have made it work. And it is great for those of us who do not smoke.... We gamble some. Haven't been on a Carnival cruise for a long time. Going on the Elation in April...will not be in the casino if there is smoking. We live close to Deadwood and can spend our money there anytime we want without the smoke.

In some places it is banned like in apartment buildings and condos. HOA have rules about it. Google smoking banned in condos and you'll get a slough of articles. I recall in one community that smoking is banned if you have children in the home and you can't even smoke in the car if there's a child. It's here - no breaks either!

I know but smokers have the option of not renting or buy such properties just like nonsmokers have the option not to go into designated smoking areas. And btw I don't smoke just tired of people trying to force there lifestyle on everyone else so what's next no soda on board cause it makes you fat what a great time when everyone is forced to comply with the norm!!
