Gift shops on board

THe ship is cashless. The only exceptions I can think of when you won't use your cruise card (balances on which go to your credit card of record) is when you buy Future Cruise Certificates, which get charged directly to your credit card, supplementary tips, which are made in cash, and cash can be used in the casino.

Remember that, if so desired, you can always purchase OBC in advance. As everything onboard (with the few exceptions noted above) is charged against the credit card you placed on file when booking (you can't actually "use" the credit card onboard) purchasing OBC in advance bumps up the available balance from which all purchases and the daily gratuities are deducted. If you don't want to do this it's not a problem. Your expenses will accrue to your portfolio and be charged to the credit card on file. You will get a full accounting of your bill at the end of the cruise or you can get it anytime using your smartphone or the automated kiosk(s) near the customer service desk.

Note: It does pay to check your folio from time to time to ensure that you aren't mistakenly charged for someone else's bar purchase.

I know you pay with a credit card just about everything on the ship, but what about buying things like in the gift shops. Do you have to pay with your credit card or is it ok to use cash?

Take notice also of discounts given. Aside from discount for Elite, it is also given based on aggregate amounts from multiple purchase dates in the boutique.

Though no Elite discount in the EFFY shop (unless there has been a very recent change). And not sure those purchases aggregate as those in Meridian Bay or Calypso Cove do.

Additional 5% for purchases on cologne/perfume and cosmetic items when the total reaches $200. Receipt on previous days taken.

Yep, Mrs Gut buys a lot of gunk for her and the girls, sometimes she uses these accumulated discounts to go back and buy more gunk.

No cash. Only on your cruise card. But you can deposit cash at the passenger services desk to offset this.

The boutiques also take regular credit (and probably debit) cards such as Visa, Master Card and American Express.

DW had to give them back the individual receipts before being given the new receipt with newly discounted total price of previously purchased individual items.

Funny how they do it differently on different ships, consistently inconsistent, I guess it may have to do with what computer system they have on each ship.

I think she had to take them back each time on Diamond, but she definitely didn't have to on Emerald.
