You're not likely to get both shuttles, I just stay near the airport - this was a good option with an airport shuttle -
The train is lovely. Great views, relaxing, and upgrading to Business Class is dirt cheap

This was a reasonably priced option I stayed at in London before my cruise, it's on a major tube line so getting around was pretty easy - Hampton Park Royal

You're right those mingling events organized by the cruise line are almost always a bust but those organized online by cruisers themselves are often better attended. Other than that I found dining with strangers helped a lot
