  1. I know, but my son's are both disabled and would not sit still for an hour, let alone a stranger touch them. They are very sensory defensive.

I did get a $50 spa card from our room steward last cruise. I asked him what it was for and he said that he is given a card every cruise to give to one of his stateroom guests and he chose me!

Ahh. That makes sense. Yeah they wouldn't use it. Doesn't mean they can't give it to you!

  2. Going on my first cruise as a vegan and first RC cruise. Any advice or help would be great. How easy will it be and should I bring some stuff with me ? Hoping it won't be too hard to find stuff to eat in the dining room and buffet. Thanks

I'm vegan and not had an issue with eating. Biggest thing is to tell them the first night in the dining room.

  3. It sounds like we should be getting some stuff during our upcoming cruise? My birthday is during the cruise, my son's birthday is also during the cruise and my other son's birthday is before the cruise. So, maybe gifts for 2 or 3 people? I know my sons would not go to the spa for anything, but maybe they would get the pixels credit? Anything else for men specifically?

Men can use the spa. I go every cruise.

  4. As someone else noted, the $50 in the spa doesn't go far. While it is possible to simply use the gift card and only have to add a tip (manicure), it also encourages someone to go to the spa and pay for a treatment when they wouldn't have otherwise. For example, I used my gift card for a hair treatment (<$50), however my friend who got one for her birthday decided to treat herself to a massage ($200). Now carnival is up $150.

Likewise for the photo - someone could go for the free 5x7 port pic, or they could be tempted to upgrade to a $10 discount on the $20 8x10 formal pic. Either way, it gets people into the photo gallery that may normally breeze by. In my previous cruises, I had honestly never given the photo gallery a second thought. This cruise, since I had the gc, I was invested, actually posed for pictures, went through all the photos several times, and bought a photo for the first time ever. (A 8x10 like my example above -- so Carnival is again up $10). If you can't decide between a few photos... $$$

Ditto for the wine, etc. The cheapest wine is $25, yes, but with a $25 discount, people will be tempted to go for a $30, $40, $50 etc. bottle instead. The markup on wine is huge, so I am sure Carnival isn't losing any money here either.

I think the marketing department at Carnival very carefully selected the $ amount for these gifts - they will benefit from both the goodwill gesture + encourage a new audience to spend more money on board. Clever eh?

You say that like this is something evil that Carnival invented? Plenty of restaurants do this, it's almost like that's the point.

  5. And then try to beat the people who are Googling the questions on their cell phones!

Expensive trivia victory. I once had my phone out before trivia checking the fun times and someone had a shot at me!

  6. Just fyi, having a passport vs. a birth certificate made us breeze through the port in Galveston after our Magic cruise in April 2014. As we retrieved our luggage, port employees told people with passports to go to one line and people with birth certificates to go to another. There were 15 or so people in front of us, while the bc line had over 300 people. Not sure if it's still this way. Maybe someone who has cruise from Galveston recently can inform us.

Last time I went through Galveston the foreign passport line was quicker so we went through that as I have a foreign passport

  7. My wife had to listen to in the casino on our Alaskan cruise in June of 2010 on the Carnival Spirit. My wife was sitting between these two ladies, both appeared to be in their late seventies, and both admitted that since they were both from south Miami. One of the ladies leaned and said to the other (with my wife in the middle) I quote my wife 'I never woulda took this cruise if I'd known it was gonna be THIS cold !! WHY doesn't the Captain DO something about it! It's so darn ( she didn't say darn') COLD I can't even lay out by the pool!' My poor wife was almost turning red to keep a straight face, finally she got up and ran outside to laugh. My wife said, where did they think they were sailing too ?? Belize ?

    Mac

This appears to be a common complaint on Alaskan cruises

  8. I would prefer that they not pick on front row people. I have been to some comedy shows that are nothing more than listening to the comedian's one-sided conversation with the front row people. I kept thinking, "I waited in line 30 minutes to listen to someone carry on a conversation with someone that I can't even hear their responses?" Everyone up front may have been having a good ole time, but those of us in the back were pretty disappointed.

A good comedian will echo what that person says. "You said x to her? How did you think that'd work out?"

  9. On a Princess cruise a woman ordered a crayfish, much like a small lobster for lunch..

When the waiter brought it..she exclaimed " OMG..its LOOKING At me, with its tiny black eyes.."

He took it back and they cooked a special meal as a substitute..

    What a waste of food..

Heaven forbid being confronted by what it is you're actually eating. Ok I'll get off my soap box

  10. Actually I live almost to Oklahoma separated by Lake Texoma. That is about 2 hours north of DFW, driving would be 7 hours so flight works better in my case. Before my husband became disabled we always drove to port. I am watching the weather and hope that fog will not be an issue for my upcoming cruise on Liberty of the seas 1/22. Crossing my fingers

I get that, I'm sailing six days after you. I'd be ok with getting fogged in at the end! Just not the start!
