  1. Won a national (age group) ultra championship. I had to accept that either I don't vacation during training (and often didn't) or accept that running, especially the long run, will be much harder to come by. I often just accepted the treadmill to squeeze in a long run.

Yes, a treadmill isn't the same, but nor is a running track on a cruise ship, my advice is to just accept the treadmill as your best option, or try and do your long run the day before/day after the cruise and mix it up for one week.

  2. I used to live in Sugarland but moved to Dallas, I never paid attention to change my profile info. It was so good of you to point that out.

Pretty snarky comments, I must say.

My apologies meant mine tongue in cheek. With all the stuff that you have to do for flying is it faster from DFW? Or is it just you prefer it to having to drive?

  3. My memory of "The World" was in Haines, Alaska, when some of the passengers from it were on an excursion bus with us. We had booked an independent kayaking excursion at Chilkoot Lake while our ship was in Skagway. The World was docked in Haines. The independent excursion company offered several different activities, and the passengers from the World were going to be riding ATVs. They convinced the bus driver to stop at a donut shop before their rides. I was amazed that anyone on a cruise ship would have a craving for donuts. But then I found out that on the World the passengers paid for their food. The donut shop was more than a treat. It was a bargain compared to what they'd been paying on their ship.

Ahh but they also have a kitchen in their room. And besides it's someone else's money and a never ending itinerary. Trying to maximize my extortion.

  4. Many fountain soda dispensers use room temperature water and syrup, and the soda guns at just about every bar in the US certainly don't dispense cold soda. I guess I fail to see the difference between room temperature fountain/gun soda and room temperature can soda when poured over ice.

Us Americans use an unusually large amount of ice with our beverages compared to most other countries. What I notice more often is the foreign bartenders dont use American amounts of ice which doesn't make it as cold in the glass as it would at home. Just ask for extra ice.

As a foreigner married to an American this is true. I'm amazed at how little soda my wife has in there.

  5. Please don't take this wrong firemanbobswife. First off, not everybody has an Apple Watch or Samsung Gear. Secondly, I'd rather carry around a small plastic card than carry around a phone every where I go. We lock up our phones in the safe as soon as we board.

If I am to the point of being too weak or lazy where I can no longer put a plastic card in a slot to open my door, I guess I had better check myself into a rest home and watch TV all day long.

I don't think she's suggesting that as the only way. Just as an alternative, I'd be all for that. Just add it to the hub app

  6. My understanding is that you don't have to wear the medallion it just has to be with you and can be in your pocket if you wish.

    Take care,

    Vinnie

    You mean... like a CARD!

Seriously how is this better than what already exists? This is a solution looking for a problem.

  7. So I am laid by the pool after a swim and wanting a frozen pina colada

You think we should wave a smart phone around

No one said a smart phone should be the only option. It just seems cheaper and a more subtle solution than this.

  8. I'd rather this just be part of the hub app. I don't wear my sign and sail pass for several reasons, the Medallion is that but on steroids.

Like Sitzmark, I can check in to my hotel with my phone & never talk to anyone (although if it's before the cruise I guess I HAVE to as I need to organize the shuttle)

  9. That is correct. In August I tried to bring on a 6 pack from Cozumel and they took them. ONLY THE PORT OF ORGIN.

They shouldn't have. This is insane. At least do the same you do with alcohol then and keep them for the last night. Treating soda as a higher level of contraband than alcohol is crazy.

  10. Interesting! Do you get local sodas that you can't get in the US? I do that with beer. Well, I don't bring them on the ship but I try to drink at least one local beer everywhere I go - even in the states for that lol.

That's what I'm doing this trip. The can only rule is kind of a bummer but I like picking up non US sodas

  11. Haven't seen one on Carnival yet but in general I love Sarah Silverman, Amy Schumer, Tig Notaro, Carol Burnette, Lily Tomlin, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Kristin Schaal, Wanda Sykes, Nikki Glaser, Natasha Leggero and many others.

But I reckon I'll only see them on a ship if they happen to sail on the same cruise as me.

Well, Carnival did do a couple Jay Leno cruises. Maybe they could get some of those funny ladies to do a show like that.

That would be a strong determining factor in which cruises I booked if I knew well enough in advance.

Something tells me Tig's no moleste and stool movement jokes won't fly on Carnival.

  12. No, I'm sorry. We are hard-core carnivores at our house. I think the most vegetarian meal we ate was a cheese pizza and ice cream! ;)

I do remember some of the games, though. Connect Four, Battleship, Trivial Pursuit, Uno, and Scrabble are some of the ones I saw most commonly. They were easily found in the Library and the Red Frog Pub.

Figured it was a long shot, but thought I'd ask. Sounds like I just need to bring my modern games though!

  13. Don't know about Carnival but most ships we've been on have a TV channel designated something like "Ship Information" that includes a map showing itinerary & current location, as well as speed, direction, sea conditions, etc.

    This exists on Carnival
