You can make it so. Go into your profile, select 'Account Settings', then 'Other Settings ', 'Notification Settings '. Finally under 'Followed Content' you can tick automatic following.
Have never had a problem with the first phone number that @colbe quoted in the previous post and it seems to be working fine.
