  1. You do see the completely irony in your post?:

    1. First, you're are work, being paid by a corporation (presumably to be productive) and posting on cruise critic. Maybe it's the jeans that's making you less formal, and bend the rules, but my guess is, this is outside the scope of your productivity.

    2. You tell someone they can wear what they want, then tease them. He may be laughing with you, but if it was me, it would sting a little on the inside as you make ME feel out of place. THAT is precisely why it would be harder to "dress to the nines" if I wanted to, and everyone else wasn't or at least, wasn't supposed to. It's not ALL good for everyone.

    Happy sailing,

    Jenna

    Hey, Jenna, right on !!!

  2.

I am in no way impressed with officers playing musical chairs or rubbing my elbows at dinner on "chic" night and feel it does little to improve the quality of either the meal or the cruise. I'd rather they stuck to running the ship.

Thanks for giving me something else to worry about. It's proper for a man to stand when addressed by someone. Has Celebrity suspended good manners, too, for the duration of the cruise or only on Elegant Chic nights? I don't want to feel like a Jack in a Box every time an officer nears, especially at dinner.

I confess that last night I dreamed that I was in line for the MDR, dressed in a blazer, shirt and tie. The hostess turned me away for being preppy and not elegant chic. I slunk back to my cabin, donned designer cargo pants, a RL polo shirt, Gators, and dutifully put on my baseball cap backwards. The hostess told me I had a good chance of being on the cover of the next Celebrity magazine. I can't wait.:p

  3. Dressing up at all is only fun when those around you do the same.

EDIT: and for the record, we're both in our late 20s

You've hit the nail on the head. To be sitting in a tux or a gown when all others around you are dressed for McDonald's just doesn't cut it.

I have suggested that DW and I dress to the nines and go to a fine restaurant but she wisely demurred, saying we'd stick out like sore thumbs. Same goes for a cruise ship.

  4. NYC is the center of the universe!

Of course we all know that intuitively. :p Several posters have wisely written that the pictures of svelte models are not representative of the reality of a Celebrity cruise. Either their comments are absolutely true, or DW and I have been absolutely unfortunate in our selection of more than 25 X cruises. We have four Celebrity cruises in the next month and a half. It will be interesting to see the actual results of the change. I'm hoping for the best but prepared for the worse.

PS I wonder what the ship's officers will wear on Elegant Chic nights? We'll see if Celebrity has really moved into modern times. ;)

  5. Also kinda entertaining you think your little corner of the world is the only perspective. Go to London or Rome sometime.

You have to understand New Yorkers (and I was born in the Bronx but escaped). They seriously believe there is nothing worthwhile west of the Hudson. That's why they refer to "The City" as being New York, as if no other city exists. For all its problems, Chicago has it all over The City.:D

  6. These last few posts (the ones with the pictures, that is) are hitting the nail on the head, I'm afraid. I'll reserve a decision until I actually see the effects of this change. Having seen grown men wear baseball caps in the MDR on several X cruises, I have little hope that this change will actually improve things or even maintain the current status..

Some people have no sense of style and this will give them the opening they've been longing for. But maybe I'm wrong. I sure hope so.

  7. While dressier than Smart Casual, Evening Chic is intended to be less dressy than Formal attire.

    Women should feel comfortable wearing:

    •A cocktail dress

•Skirt, pants or designer jeans with an elegant top

    Men should feel comfortable wearing:

•Pants or designer jeans with a dress shirt, button-down shirt or sweater

    •Optional sport coat or blazer

Sounds like that wouldn't get me into any decent country club having a casual night. If that is Elegant Chic, what is smart casual?

  8. I also just received this email. If you click on the link that says learn more, it still list the number of formal nights by length of the cruise.

    Per the email:

    Evening Chic evolutions include

Sipping destination-inspired drinks at the new Captains Reception

Rubbing elbows with Senior Officers (including the Captain) at new officer hosted tables

Glamming it up with a spa makeover (Facebook profile update check!)

Evening Chic sailing departing December 4 and beyond.

So, what does this mean??? DW just bought a new dress for formal night on our upcoming Dec 6 sailing.

Have her wear it. She'll look better than anyone in "evening chic", whatever that is.

  9. I'm happy.

    But

Our cruise is this coming Saturday on Reflection. Wish the switchover was earlier. I'll still bring my formal. DH was deciding between his tux or a suit. I'll tell him suit.

If I'm going to take a suit, I'll take a tux. Same difference in packing and every man looks better in a tux than an other attire he could wear. Trouble for me is the space in the suitcase. We've got three in a row coming up and my wife likes to dress up. So do I, but those darn weight restrictions are killing me.

  10.

I'm sure it's difficult for the senior officers to sit through a dinner answering the same old questions and not being able to partake of the wine (they serve some nice ones compared to the cheap plonk we usually buy ), .

Once on a HA cruise we sat with the captain and 2 or 3 of his officers. They looked so miserable and so was I. Worse, the meal was excellent and had DW and I been dining alone, I surely would have asked for seconds. I felt sorry for them. It's an anachronism which can be abolished at any time, as far as I'm concerned.

  11. FWIW on a Princess cruise in 1997 DW and I were invited to the Captain's table on the first night. After a very enjoyable night (captain was an very affable Italian), we thanked him for his hospitality and started to leave. His head waiter rushed up and informed us that we would be dining at the table every night of the cruise. Sure 'nuff, we did along with two other couples.

We've eaten at the Captain's table two or three times with X, but the table is so large, we don't think we'd enjoy it, were we to be invited again. It really isn't that big a deal, believe me.

  12. I use a big box warehouse store's 800 # also. Gives the best OBC. If the price drops, never a problem.

2 years ago I was on a Eastern Med cruise on the Reflection. My table in the MDR had 3 other couples all from different parts of the country (California, Colorado, Chicago and us from NC), all of us used that same big box warehouse store.

I've used them, too, with no problems except getting an insurance certificate one time. On occasion, though, I have gotten greater OBCs from an agent I'd used in the past. There is some comfort in dealing with a big outfit and well known

  13. The Brits can defend themselves, I'm sure, though removing tips for hard working employees is really cheap to my mind. But we meet British friends every Christmas on the Eclipse cruise and I have noticed the husband tipping the bartender in the Elite lounge extra every night. So painting the British with a broad brush is as unfair as calling all Americans "ugly"

  14. What are the rules pertaining to switching a reservation to a TA? I take it that no paperwork is involved. Just make the reservation with X and tell them to transfer it to my agent? What about proximity to sailing date? If I get a good deal, say, within final payment, can I still make the transfer?

  15. Hope it didn't spoil your vacation :) Remember the hidden cameras in hotel rooms, filming what maids really do in bathrooms. My flight attendant friends say they spread hand towels on bathroom counters to keep their toiletries off the surface. People who travel for a living apparently have lots of little tricks to stay healthy. You'll love this one: taking the plastic cover off the glass and putting it on the TV remote control. I'd love to tell you why, but it would be deleted in about 2 nanoseconds.
