  1. i am late to the party, but if you get up to St. Johns NFL “Death on the Ice “ is required reading for schoolchildren. As an adult If und it a very good read.
  2. New to Hal. Booked May 4-11 Canada and New England. Does anyone know what time the shows are scheduled?
  3. In defense of FlyTalker, he knows his stuff about the airline industry. I have found DL to be getting stingier with their upgradable inventory. For example, try and use one of those regional or international upgrade certs they reward you with for $ spent and loyalty. I have found them worthless. Had tickets booked using regional certs for upgrade, DL famous for schedule changes, bumped the First class seats saying they were not available on the new schedule but would be happy to waitlist. There seemed to be plenty of F class seats for purchase. And the sky miles, mileage plus liability has to be huge for the airlines with people not flying for a few years.
  4. St. Johns Newfound, and is one of my most favorite places. The people are very friendly. There are 2 maybe more scenic drives if you wish to rent a car. Brigus is a great day trip, home of Captain Bob Bartlett. If you can hook up with Helen Bigood, she offers great tours. The Rooms is a very interesting museum and a good lunch spot. St. Marys ecological park is a bird watchers dream. One of my favorite memories is sailing out of the harbor with what seemed like most of the town lined up waving with the cannon at Signal Hill saluting us.
  5. Thank You FlyerTalker. I am betting on Omni. I looked up the flight from last year and it was Omni, a 777 which is such a big aircraft. Their fleet has 767 and 757. Either way I hope they have some entertainment. Miami is one of my least favorite airports. The flight leaves at 730a so I imagine Viking will hustle us over there around 5a. They have us staying at a hotel the night before.
  6. Off subject but I wanted FlyerTalker input. I have booked Air with Viking Miami to Manaus which is provided by charter. I relieved a notice today of a schedule change, no big deal an hr earlier. The email Showed Omni air. When I go to MVJ the airlie shows Andes Aerolineas. I am wondering why the discrepancy? Thanks
  7. Is this the case in the Wintegarden for afternoon tea?
  8. Curious for the two👎 on Amazon and Caribbean? I imagine the Amazon is sorta like the Mississippi, big and muddy and having never been to the West Indies thought it might be interesting.
  9. I find it interesting about the different experience for the same cruises. In Orkney we hired a private driver. We were ahead of the crowds. When we were leaving the rings of Brodnar the busses were just arriving. The perpetual twilight was really a mood setter. And yes the glacier was really crowded. I forgot about that wasted bus ride and the waits for the restroom when we got to the glacier, In Orkney the tender was really far away. But you forget the inconvenient moments for the overall great ones. I never met an employee who wasn't pleasant and accommodating making the onboard experience exceptional.
  10. Uggg…I was in dispatch and operations for a busy airline and it was sometimes a scramble to find a gate. But it is concerning to me that this Viking Sea shows in San Juan PR Dec 19 but it is not reflected on cruise mapper. Why would that be? Any ideas out there.
  11. I vote for “Into the midnight sun.”. Loved northern Norway, Tromso and the Lofoten Islands. So beautiful. The rings of Brodnar and the cathedral in Orkney were outstanding. Shetland island had those cute ponies and some military history as well as the Vikings. We went falconing in Edinburgh. And what was really convenient is the ship sailed up the Thames and spent the night before departure overlooking London. You are right at the Cutty Sark and the Maritime museum. The transfer was smooth.
  12. Yes the ship docks the day before. Even though it is not shown in cruise mapper. We had a messy situation in Vancouver with Viking. There was no room for them to dock at Canada place as all the big boats were in port. They had to tender to offload the passengers and their baggage. One if the tenders got damaged in the mess. They finally boarded the outbound pax in the late afternoon. Customs was a nightmare, and Viking got delayed a day to fix the tender. On Dec 19 Viking is supposed to be docked in San Juan but there are around 6 boats showing docked. And viking is not showing up in the schedule. Viking has a bigger presence in San Juan than Vancouver so they should play nice with them. I digress. So basically the ship and pax will be cleared the day before so disembarking should just be walking off to a ride to the airport. Is the ship terminal far from the ride pick ups? And does Viking always dock at the same dock? Thanks for your input.
  13. I am worried about the time frame. I was on one cruise where there was almost a fistfight to disembark early. Hoping Viking guests will be more civilized. At what time would you suggest leaving the ship? And will Viking move the luggage? No customs correct?
  14. We are off Viking Sea Dec 20. The boat docks on Dec 19. Per Viking guidelines it says do not book a flight before 8a. I had booked a flight at 0815. Am I cutting it too close? Are there taxis available or should I book a ride to the airport from a private ride? Is there a long walk from the ship to the taxi or ride pick up? How far away in time is the airport to the cruise ship? I believe Viking offers transfers but will it get us to the airport on time? I do not see any other ships disembarking Dec 20, but it is the start of the Christmas holidays so is traffic bad? Thanks in advance for any input.
  15. I am wondering about ground transportation from San Juan to the airport. We are arriving off Viking Sea Dec 20. Are taxis readily available? Or is it better to hire private transportation? Is there a distance from the cruise ship to the ground transportation? meaning can a driver pick you up easily. Our flight is departing at 815 and in my notes from Viking they advise no flights before 800a, am i cutting it too close? How long is the drive from the cruise ship to the airport? Thanks in advance for any insight.
  16. Good point Globaliser! It’s not early, it’s on time. But I believe the original poster was asking if 2 hrs was enough time for an international flight. If I have to worry about cutting it close it’s not a good start. .Flying our of a small airport maybe 2 hrs, Chicago can be sometimes very good and sometimes awful. Miami forgetaboutit…
  17. What you have going for you is the early morning departure. The flights are usually on time if there hasn't been any irregular ops (ie: a storm, or a computer meltdown that has been happening lately);the day before. What you don't have going for you are the long security lines. What I have found lately is that the flights close the doors to the aircraft 10-15 minutes early. I know this to be true in Delta. Once closed, they don't open them. Even if the ramp is still loading bags.
  18. Thank you. We stay on the boat for 2 nights before we depart for the airport.
  19. Is an 815a departure time out of San Juan PR off Viking doable? Delta flight. The ship docks the day before. Thanks
  20. Thanks flyer talker guru of the skies.
  21. I too have had some frustration with Viking Air regarding booking a charter flight from Miami to Manaus in Dec. The agents were all pleasant, polite but their level of training varies. The best luck I have had was sending a text toTellus@viking.com. I have always received a prompt phone call back with an agent that could solve problems. Has anyone had any experience with the charter flight? It is operated by National Air, departing 830am from Miami. An airbus 330, seat assignments at gate. No wifi or entertainment according to their website. The Viking agent says it is all economy however the seat map shows some upgraded seats. Thanks
  22. Jumping in with a suggestion for Seward which is to rent a car. Yes the Exit glacier is very accessible. There is also a wildlife viewing area at Bear Creek Wier a few miles out of town. There are literally thousands of salmon swimming upstream. Also if you want to venture further, Gwins roadhouse in Coopers Landing is worth the scenic drive along the Kenai river. It is worth the drive just for a bowl of their chowder. This is a very do able day trip.
