  1. Yes, I ust got an email from them telling me I need to book within the next year or I will lose my Black status. I don't remember reading about any time limit when I applied, however that was two years ago.

I wonder if after it lapses, you can reapply.

They told me that we had 3 yrs to book our first cruise when we matched our status. They are bringing the Meraviglia to New York next year. We are booked on it next October. That will be a little more than 3 yrs, but, as long as we were booked before the time ran out, we are good. Then, I think you have to cruise at least once a year to keep your status. Not sure if you can re apply or not.

  2. Hi

We did this about 4 years ago, from memory Halifax was easy to get around, quite hilly, Portland was very nice, lovely main street. Bar Harbour was a tender port, you could walk around or get a tour to Arcadia National park from the dock. St Johns I think was docked in a working port (I think) and we did not go ashore as there was nothing there.

    Hope this helps.

St John’s is a nice port to walk around. They have the city market which is nice. They also had a nice craft tent right off the ship. Some nice shops along the water front street. We used to go there every year, but, haven’t been for a couple years. We will be going there Sept 13th. Looking forward to it. They used to hand out roses to the first hundred or more women off the ship. The men, they gave tac pins. Very friendly Canadians.

We took a tour of St Johns once too. Very nice.

  3. MSC has a loyalty match program

Yes, doing an MSC October 2019. As D+, we will be their highest tier, Black. Only doing it for the itinerary. Price is right too and down payment was only $98. Otherwise, it’s Royal all the way, with several Celebrity thrown in.

  4. FYI, the first two night BOGO deal offered on your cruise planner to every cruiser (including first time ever cruisers) is less expensive than the D+ discount.

Well, that’s not fair......you mean we spent all that money to reach D+ and we could have had the BOGO at a lower price being a newbie? Of all the nerve......lol

  5. I did the same!!!!! Are you doing the Canada cruise or the repo cruise? We are doing the repo.

We are doing the 10 day to Quebec and back. We don’t fly, so want to return to NY. I’m sure you will have a great cruise. One thing I liked about booking with MSC, is that they only required a $98 total, refundable down payment. Not sure about the big ship, but, just trying to see what other cruise lines offer. We are at 410 pts with Royal and will never make Pinnacle at our age. We have 6 future cruises booked with Royal on the Grandeur, my favorite ship. We will never desert Royal as long as we are able to cruise though. Since MSC matched our status, it’s a good chance to see other cruise line’s perks.

  6. Yes, we are trying MSC next October, 2019. The Meraviglia is coming to New York. It’s a new ship. It will be in NY for the month of October, before transitioning to Florida. They match status and being D+ gives us their top tier of Black. We just want to try something different. I know we will never leave Royal. Just want to experience another cruise line.....we have done Carnival and Norwegian years ago.

  7. I was just at the Drs today. I got back from cruise last Thursday and I got sick about 2 days before the cruise ended. I have bronchitis. Not sure how I got it. Some people were coughing on the cruise, especially a woman in the WJ who was at the salad bar coughing like crazy. She didn’t even turn her head, just put her hand up in front of her mouth. I was a couple people back from her. Funny thing was, that she butted in line to get the salad dressing. What’s wrong with people and what happened to common sense. I could have gotten sick from that. Maybe it was the air conditioning unit. Our cabin didn’t get as cool as they usually do. I had it on the lowest setting. I think the next time I will report it. Maybe it wasn’t cooling because of the filter.

  8. Just booked our first cruise on MSC for October 2019. It will be leaving from New York, no flying for us. We will take a bus into NY. Won’t risk driving ourselves. We got the status match...D+ to their Black and highest status. It’s a 10 night to Canada with an overnight in Quebec....no US ports on this cruise, other than the home port.

Looking forward to a new experience. Love Royal and we are loyal, but, just wanted to try something different. It’s a long way away and anything can happen, but looking forward to it and visiting Quebec again.

  9. Wondering if John Blair will return to Grandeur after subbing on Anthem. Any word on the new CD on Grandeur?

Big Bob Leininger....if you want to know anything about him...Google. We had him in December. I didn’t encounter him that much on our cruise. Some liked him, some didn’t. Didn’t see him that much. I know he was tall 6’5”. Tornado Tanya was about half his size....she was a great AC, but is leaving for the Anthem.

  10. While paging through the Washington Post today I came across some sad news. Entertainer/comedian Marty Allen has passed away at the age of 95. I know that a number of us have had the pleasure of cruising with him, and his wife Karen, many times over the years and enjoyed our time visiting with him. He always had time to shmooze and pose for pictures. For years I'd always seemed to miss his cruises and then finally hooked up with him a few times. He always put on a most entertaining show and will surely be missed. He was among the last of a dying breed of performer. Condolences to his family and may he RIP. Goodbye dere Marty!

What a shame....he was an excellent entertainer. We saw him on the Explorer years ago. He was so friendly. He’d walk down the cabin hallways, always saying hello. He was so accessible to us ordinary people. He lived a long life and I’m sure a good one. His wife was lovely and a great entertainer too. They worked well together. He will be missed.

  11. I’m curious how this will work out on the Grandeur out of Baltimore if they do away with the overflow. I cruise on her 3-4 times a year and we have always had an overflow. I mean a lot of people in the overflow...well over 100 passengers. Even the Concierge lounge has a big overflow. I’ll be cruising in April again. Can’t wait to see what will happen. There might be a mutiny if they do away with the overflow. I guess the Schooner Bar will be extremely crowded. It usually is anyway. Should be interesting. Didn’t hear anything about any changes yet. Cheers! [emoji484][emoji485][emoji481]

  12. A few posts back the Grandeur was hobbling back to the east coast-Baltimore with an unscheduled stop off at Port Canaveral in lieu of the Bahamas in hopes of getting a mechanical issue looked at and repaired. Since then, any passengers able to pass along any further information as to how she's been handling the North Atlantic during the Winter ? Or as the old cliche goes "No news is good news"?

Yes, it was fixed, but, on the past cruise, they spent an overnight in Miami for more work. Don’t know if it was linked to the previous rudder problem though. The ship just got back to port yesterday.

I’ve been on the Grandeur many times in the winter months and the ship handles it great. Problems happen to all ships from time to time, no matter where they cruise from. The Grandeur is over 21 yrs old and still going strong.

  13. Just curious to see if diamond and above C&A members buy the beverage package or are the 3 drinks on card/diamond lounge enough?

You know the 3 drinks on your sea pass are only during the same hours as the cocktail hours in the evening at the Diamond and Concierge Lounges. If you want drinks any other time of day, you will have to pay for them. So, it’s up to you if you want to have drinks during the day and how many you would drink. We never buy it. We wouldn’t drink enough to make the cost of the package worth it. We just enjoy our free drinks at the lounges in the evening.

  14. I can't even put into words just how awful and disgusting that is.

When I experienced this on the Grandeur, not the actual act, the crew who cleaned it up treated it like when someone throws up, they had hazmat suits on and disinfected the area. Still disgusting when the owner just walks away without reporting it and having it cleaned up the way it should be.
