Seacreature101 Posted April 16, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 16, 2018 Hello: Have about decided to go with old locks next year but dh asked about scenery difference. If we can only do the partial transit, is the scenery pretty much the same throughout with exception of when we are going through locks in comparison with the new locks? Thanks for your help. BillB48 Posted April 16, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 16, 2018 Very little difference in the scenery, particularly on a partial transit. Coming from the Atlantic the ship will enter the same breakwater, then proceed to pass beneath the almost completed Atlantic Bridge. After passing beneath the new bridge is where there will be a slight fork in the "road". At this point you will be able to see both the old and the new locks. The new locks will be to the port and the old Gatun Locks basically straight ahead. The channels are really not far apart here and each lock is not far from the other either. While you won't really be able the other lock while you are in the locks, you will be able to see ship/s in other lock.
thinfool Posted April 16, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 16, 2018 Frankly, I got more out of transiting the old locks....then, in the lake, tendering ashore and taking a ship tour that stopped at the new visitor center (for the new locks). It was a busy day and several ships were lined up to transit the new locks (eastbound). Great photo opp!

Rare ski ww Posted April 23, 2018 #5 Share Posted April 23, 2018 You don't really have a choice which locks the ship uses. The new locks are for ships that are too large to use the old locks. I'm pretty sure the cruise ships use the old locks. As said you can see the new locks as you do the transit.

It's up to the cruiser to choose the ship using the locks he wants to transit. Yes, most cruise ships are still using the old locks. But there are a few using the new locks. Caribbean Princess has been doing regular partial transits of the new locks (Caribbean side). Disney Wonder and Carnival Splendor have both transited the new locks to the west coast. NCL Bliss will soon follow. EM
marysb Posted April 23, 2018 #7 Share Posted April 23, 2018 Entering the Pedro Miguel Lock. You can see the new Pacific lock on the right, and faintly in the distance, the Bridge of the Americas.
