cruisingqueen86 Posted November 13, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 13, 2017 Is there any official word on the status of the 11/21/17 cruise on the Gem. I have read that repairs are being done in Barbados. Fingers crossed for that sailing:cool:
Rare mking8288 Posted November 13, 2017 #2 Share Posted November 13, 2017 If you look at AIS maritime radar tracking sites such MarineTraffic today, you can see that they took her out to sea and did a few loops off her current port, where work is being done and is now just about back in Barbados, just south of Bridgetown ... doing quite a few complicated zik zap, maneuver patterns, probably testing whatever technical repairs done or being worked upon. To me, that looks promising - fingers crossed, we just sailed her this May and loved that ship. Official words from NCL ... nothing yet.

The_J Posted November 13, 2017 #4 Share Posted November 13, 2017 I called NCL this morning and according to what their CS people had, it's still scheduled to go.
shipsandshores Posted November 13, 2017 #5 Share Posted November 13, 2017 Sitting in port on the Summit. Have watched the Gem barely move all day. Was sitting just off coast when we arrived and is a little closer to port as prepare to depart.
cruisingqueen86 Posted November 13, 2017 Author #6 Share Posted November 13, 2017 mking8288. Thanks for your very knowledgeable answer. We love the Gem to but she is getting old (and so am I). I hope she has a few good trips left in her.

Rare mking8288 Posted November 14, 2017 #9 Share Posted November 14, 2017 ... We love the Gem to but she is getting old (and so am I) ... Just a semi-educated guess on what's happening, maybe she was on a sea trial to test the repairs done and/or getting fixes on the go ... only NCL's ship engineers & corporate HQ know for sure. She's been barely moving, maybe just a tiny bit of steering while anchored off the waters, just away from land. She looked beautiful and great to us this May, felt almost good as new ... definitely got more than just a few more trips for you, me and others ... for a 10 years old ship ... and, who isn't getting older, hush - we all got of plenty of cruise life in us, in years & decades ahead - live as young as we feel. Ship's crew are probably kept busy, taking good care of her, getting maintenance done unscheduled, polishing and buffing the wood finishing ... we might just book her at least 1 more time while she's still homeport here in the city. Once the work is done, tested & certified and fit to return to service ... they can bring her up to NY in probably 3 days, 4 at most running full speed (we're on her post-Sandy in 2012, topping 25 knots ... )
langkamm Posted November 14, 2017 #10 Share Posted November 14, 2017 Sounds like you love the Gem. I'm hoping I'll get the opportunity to love her as well. We are scheduled to sail on the 11/21 sailing out of NYC. Fingers and toes are crossed and my "almost" 4 year old prays every night that they fix our ship so we can go on vacation. Been looking forward to it since April. :)

mamagina Posted November 14, 2017 #12 Share Posted November 14, 2017 We were in Barbados yesterday and the Gem is just hanging in the harbor. Our cab driver told us it is “dead” lol. We saw it leave the pier under its own power but another person at the port told us it will have to be towed back into our spot when we leave. We love the Gem! So sad! pixiedustdawn Posted November 15, 2017 #18 Share Posted November 15, 2017 The Gem is out to sea when she needs to leave the port. She comes back usually in the evening if the dock is available. She should be completed by the weekend and ready for the next sailing. Fingers crossed. I had a wonderful 11 day sailing on her and ready to go back again. She is still a young ship and has plenty of life left in her, just needs some small repairs once in a while.
Rare mking8288 Posted November 15, 2017 #19 Share Posted November 15, 2017 Sounded like good news being reported from those onboard the Gem, for leaving this Friday - she'll need up to 4 sea days, nonstop at 20 knots to make her way out of the Caribbean - up to NY in time for 11/21 - next Tuesday, covering a distance of more than 1,825 nautical miles (calculated at 3 days 19 hours) Good luck & fingers/legs crossed. maggie cruises Posted November 15, 2017 #23 Share Posted November 15, 2017 The Gem and it's great layout is the best ship ncl has. I wish they would take a long hard look at its layout and build their new ships the same way Great lido deck design for maximum comfort and use Great sun deck And above all...the smoking situation on the Gem is nearly non existent...because the designers had the right idea.... Puts walls around the casino and put it out of the way!!!! Sent from my iPad using Forums
