bhopal21 Posted June 2, 2016 #102 Share Posted June 2, 2016 We didn't miss the bar that much and the Independence had a fair amount of activity later. We played cards with friends in the midship lounge most evenings and set up our own bar. The lounge also contained an extensive shelf of games and dvds as each cabin also had a dvd player along with the tv. I usually make a sizable donation to the casino during a cruise and not having one on this trip was very kind to my wallet. Mike:)

SteelMagnolia9 Posted June 20, 2016 #105 Share Posted June 20, 2016 Thanks for posting your review here, Chris. I'll be aboard America in 2017 for the Upper Mississippi cruise. This will be #4 for me with American Cruise Lines. I'm younger than the demographic on your cruise, but have loved seeing the U.S. from its rivers and coasts. It's an unique experience. Thanks again for sharing your review with us!
bhopal21 Posted September 13, 2016 #106 Share Posted September 13, 2016 Who is up next for an ACL cruise? We have a couple of land based trips planned so our next ACL is not until next September.:( I need a small ship fix vicariously if no other way. jimlssi Posted September 18, 2016 #109 Share Posted September 18, 2016 We are on the Independence for 2 weeks btb next month, Baltimore r/t, then Baltimore to Charleston. Since there is no onboard laundry service, I asked my TA to inquire of ACL. She was told that the cruise director would arrange for a shore based laundry service midway ( I assume Baltimore) through the 2 weeks. Anyone had experience with this arrangement? Or should I be scouting around for a self service laundrymat in the Baltimore inner harbor area? Thanks
bhopal21 Posted September 18, 2016 #110 Share Posted September 18, 2016 Although we didn't use it I do remember the hotel manager taking laundry ashore and retrieving it on our cruise back in March. I think you will be fine. He did ask if we needed laundry service but we were fine without. Have a great cruise and please let us know how it went. bhopal21 Posted September 19, 2016 #112 Share Posted September 19, 2016 Hey Jim, if you have a favorite spirit call ACL 800-894-8570 and let them know. They will make sure to have it available for the evening cocktail hour during your cruise. I didn't know this until our cruise in March. Have a great cruise! jimlssi Posted September 24, 2016 #113 Share Posted September 24, 2016 Thanks Mike.....will do. Wish I could do the same with their house wines. I would pay a surcharge to get something better than the "house plonk" Jim

jebhoward3 Posted September 25, 2016 #116 Share Posted September 25, 2016 So glad to find this thread now in an easy to find location. We are booked on the Ohio River Cruise on the Queen of the Mississippi July 18, 2017. This will be our 2nd cruise with American Cruise Lines. Unless I missed it no one has mentioned the ability to request 1/2 serving for entre for lunch and dinner. We chose this option several times and kept us from feeling so overstuffed. Does this continue to be an option?

Katiecat26 Posted October 12, 2016 #118 Share Posted October 12, 2016 I've been on the Independence, going from Charleston to Jacksonville. That was about 2 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I too, was not happy with the fact that there was no safe in the room, but then had no problem without it. I do feel that the price is a bit too high. I am noticing that all the other threads that are here are from a year or more ago. Anyone going on the Hudson River cruise this October 22nd? mennolly Posted January 2, 2017 #121 Share Posted January 2, 2017 Welcome back. We are doing the New England Islands. Mike:) New to cruising and new to this site (and struggling with it). Did you take this cruise yet? If so how was it? We were looking at one of their NE cruises for May or June 2017. I was mostly curious right now about how much time is on-shore v. on-board/sailing, and whether when you are sailing during day light you can see anything scenic go by. We are mid-60s -- usually do fly-drive trips. And do you have to be on board for dinner every night! We would probably eat as many meals on land as possible, as we are into local eateries when we travel, of the "diners, drive in and dives" or Bizarre Foods variety. Thanks! bhopal21 Posted January 3, 2017 #122 Share Posted January 3, 2017 We have not taken the New England Islands cruise yet. On our last cruise we mostly sailed during the day so there was plenty to see. We were not required to be onboard for any meals and were free to dine elsewhere anytime we were in port. Mike:)
mennolly Posted January 3, 2017 #123 Share Posted January 3, 2017 Thanks. You were the only one I saw who even mentioned New England recently and I couldn't tell. Are dinners generally "come as you are" if you are on board? Which for us on vacation tends to the highly casual.
bhopal21 Posted January 4, 2017 #124 Share Posted January 4, 2017 Yes we never felt the need to dress fancy for dinner. We were casual at all times. Mike:)

Thanks to all who posted. we are going on the Independence next week and I have a bar question. What is available? Basic drinks or more complex cocktails? Is there a cocktail menu? looking forward to a week on the southeast coast.
