Just wondering if anyone has cruised solo recently... Came back from our second cruise last month and it seems like I am the only one who wants to go next year. I really enjoy cruising and think I would be fine burly wanted to get others thoughts.

Thanks!

About 30 of my 40 or so cruises have been solo, and I think I not only survived, but thrived.

I'm a guy who grew up in the Bronx way back when, so I'm used to handling diversity and can take care of myself in oddball situations.

I also do many land vacations solo as well, rarely an issue. I don't care if I eat alone or with a group, I developed some flexability along those lines.

Think of it as expanding one's horizons. There is a special interest thread for solo cruisers her on CC BTW.

Not recently, but I cruised solo before I was married. I enjoyed being on my own schedule on board. In port, I took the ship's organized excursons. I didn't explore the ports on my own. I guess it just depends on how comfortable you are alone. I think I was required to pay my fare and half of another fare, but that was on another line.

I cruise and vacation solo all the time and feel it's the only way to go. You do what you want, when you want and how you want. You do end up paying double however (since they price the cabins as 2 ppl occupancy). Most people that know I'm a solo say "Boy do I wish I could do that!"

If you enjoy your own company and aren't afraid to strike up a conversation with a stranger than you should be good to go. You can join a table in the MDR if you want or dine by yourself. I personally stay away from the MDR - it takes waaaay to long. I eat at the other venues (not the $$$ ones) and enjoy people watching and learning about other cruisers - many times the people sitting at a nearby table will start talking to you cuz you are alone.

If people ask you if your are alone and you don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling about them, just say "No, my friends wanted to _________ and I wanted to come here. We are meeting up in 1/2 hour." For my own safety I also wear a solitaire and a band ring on my left hand ring finger and that keeps the weirdos away.

In all my years vacationing alone I have only had one time where I felt uncomfortable and that was on a cruise. I thought a guy was following me, so I circled around the buffet a couple of times and he was still behind me so I headed for the first person/people I saw and started talking to them like they were part of my group and had been looking for them. They could tell I was a bit uncomfortable and played along. After he was gone I explained what happened, thanked them for their help and went on my merry way.

I hope that helps -

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

If you like your own company, you'll love cruising solo. Solo cruising can be very enjoyable as long as you don't mind paying the 100% solo supplement. Your best bet to get around that is to gamble enough in the casino to get a bounce back offer for a free cabin which gets you out of the solo supplement. My thinking is if I'm going to have to pay 100% solo supplement, I might as well spend that money in the casino instead to get a bounce back offer.

Some people don't like being alone, but others thrive on being alone. Just decide which type of person you are. Personally I love cruising solo.

I also cruise solo a lot. Two of my next 3 are solo. I always join the cruise critic roll calls and have made many friends this way. I love having to not answer to anyone but myself but know I have people to hang out if that is what I want to do. Most of my cruises are through the casino.

Just curious - in ballpark figures how much does one have to spend in the casino to get a bounce back?

I do it. If you are comfortable doing things by yourself or if you are good at meeting people you will be fine. You never know until you try. It's nice being able to do whatever you want 100% of the time. The solo forum is a good place to go for advice as well.

Was wondering the same thing!

I really enjoy the peace and quiet of being alone so I am not too worried about that!

Thanks everyone!

I too, cruise SOLO quite often, and I too REALLY enjoy the flexibility, and meeting other people at dinner, and not worrying about how much money my other half is losing in the casino. We have a small business, and it's difficult for us to both sail at the same time, but going SOLO works for us. I think you'd enjoy the experience. ;)

The worst part about cruising solo with Carnival and a few other lines is that I have to pay full fare for the person who isn't there and get none of the credit for those sea days.

Used to be I could cruise Carnival for 150%, when they raised it to double, I decided to try some other lines. NCL has a good thing going with their reduced rates for their reduced area studio cabins, especially if I can score a free perk like specialty dining with the fare.

I've found cruising Celebrity solo in December was less expensive than Carnival the last few years. It pays to shop around.

So disappointed with the current trend of ALL mainstream cruiselines not offering solo discounts. All I saw on the last V to G were on luxury lines which are already high priced. I did see one on for Fathom though. Curious as to why such a drop.

I join the majority of solo cruisers above me. I love cruising solo for so many reasons. After my first solo cruise I was a bit surprised by how much more fun I was having. No timetable to watch, eat when and where I want......do nothing or do everything. Very good to recharge my own batteries.

The problem I bet the cruise lines might anticipate is that as more and more people start cruising solo I can see many of the cabins being half occupied, they still want the base fee for operational costs. Haha, can you imagine a ship full of nothing but solo cruisers....I'd go and have a blast!! I am married (40 years) and do wear my ring, have never had an awkward moment from other passengers.

Another side of it I read about, was 2 friends each getting their own cabin instead of sharing one. So, yes, revenue lost.

You will get different answers on this. Usually when you reach 5000 points, you get a free cruise (bounceback offer).

I've been offered one when I had less and wasn't offered one when I had more.

You get credits for money in and time played so if you put $20 in and hit for $500 and play it back, your credits add up.

Some people say they only spent a few dollars in the casino but got a free cruise also. No one knows (LOL)

Solo cruising is great....I can spend all day in the casino with no one looking for me (HA!)

I love cruising solo. The only thing I do differently is I tend to take ships excursions more often than private.

I find that I do that also unless it is in a location that I am already familiar with. I find taking the ship sponsored excursions is actually a good way to meet people that are on the ship.

  • 1 year later...

I have travel many land destination solo and now I am planning my first solo cruise. I am worried if I get drunk, misbehave, lost control or start buying drinks for a bunch of random people at a bar. I been single and out of the travel league for about 2 years.
