cb at sea Posted January 18, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 18, 2012 You really should get yourself a guidebook on your ports....invaluable info in those books! It will allow you to see all there is to do at each place....including restaurants/price ranges, beaches, points of interest, transportation....everything you need to know to do things on your own, without paying for pricey excursions! Libraries have them, or you can buy one!!!

cruiseguy1016 Posted January 18, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 18, 2012 When in Tortola, Take an excursion that will bring you to The Baths. It's a nice beach with lots of rock formations to walk through.

I completely agree. See if there's an excursion that takes you to both The Baths and Jost Van Dyke. Both are my favorites in the Caribbean. You should be able to easily visit both. blacksheep2 Posted January 18, 2012 #7 Share Posted January 18, 2012 A group of 16 of us did the pirate cruise several years ago--let's just say the group of people who thought it was a sight seeing cruise were in for a suprise-it is a rum cruise, then we stopped and anchored and people jumped off the side of the boat into the water, walked the plank and we all got very drunk-we were in bad shape when we went back tot he boat-but still talk about it to this day-If it has stayed the same I would not take children on it--the one thing I remember is how slippery the deck was because it was wet--

TBird1 Posted January 22, 2012 #10 Share Posted January 22, 2012 we're on the same cruise. We're river tubing in Dominica, going to Harrison's cave in Barbados, and heading to the beach in St. Maarten. St. Kitts-ziplining, and I can't remember what we're doing in Tortola....kayaking maybe? NordicPrince Posted January 22, 2012 #11 Share Posted January 22, 2012 Want a day extraordainaire? For $25 US (50 barbados dollar) p/p you can get a day pass to the Barbados Hilton. Located on a southern peninsula which you can see from where the ship docks. Just check at the front desk when you get there. Taxi is about $15 each way. For this you get use of all their pools. They supply with towels chairs and umbrellas. You can get food and bar service at the beach (extra). Check if they still do a luncheon buffet for a little more. The amazing thing is the surf. You can walk into the water almost shoulder high with no problem. The bottom is flat with no stones or shells. There are jettys on 2 sides which prevent the really big ones from coming in. But there is more than enough to make it refreshing and invigorating. Great body surfing and riding the waves. DW still talks about it to this day and that was in Jan 2010. And we have been to many beaches with RCI. Definitely a highlight IMO. Have a great cruise.
NordicPrince Posted January 22, 2012 #12 Share Posted January 22, 2012 For a day in St Kitts DW and I can recommend a tour with Thenford Grey (you can google him). He takes you around the island in his A/C van and shows you all the highlights of the island, including Brimstone Hill fortress, the Romney Manor, and a hill with a view of the active Atlantic on one side and the calm Caribbean on the other. Unbelievably beautiful. He will also take you for a 90 minute visit to Cockleshell Beach. Also extremely reasonable for an almost 5 hour tour. Thenford is an an extremely knowledgable and well spoken man with an encyclopedic knowledge of the island. You cannot go wrong with this tour. Happy cruising. I wouldn't hesitate to go with him again:) As someone noted above - go the the individual port boards here and you'll find all the info you could possibly want
Conanc Posted January 22, 2012 #14 Share Posted January 22, 2012 We are leaving feb 11 on serenade of the seas. (so very excited) Tortola, st kitts, dominica, st maarten, and barbados are our stops. Do you have any advice about these ports? what to do, where to eat? We are planning on doing the pirate party cruise in barbados, has anyone done it? Thanks Just back from the same cruise yesterday. We has a great time! We always take a cab and spend the day at Orient Beach in St. Martin. In St. Kitts we have done an island tour with Rosevelt which included Brimstone Fortress and Romney Manor, and Cockshell Beach or you could also just take a cab over to S. Friar's Beach or to the Marriott and have a beach day. Our friends booked the kayak and snorkel excursion and loved it. In Barbados we swam with the sea turtles and snorkeled on a private catamaran. It was one of the best excursions ever. Barbados is beautiful! In Dominica, we went on a whale watch and then went over to the mineral baths at Screw's Spa. We have also enjoyed the Champagne snorkeling in the past. In Tortola we took the ship tour over to the Baths in Virgin Gorda and on another cruise took a sail and snorkel trip. You will love the itinerary and crew on this ship. Jump over to the individual ports of call area to search the boards or to ask specific questions. There is a wealth of information over there! Enjoy your cruise!!!
jratly Posted January 22, 2012 #15 Share Posted January 22, 2012 We are leaving feb 11 on serenade of the seas. (so very excited) Tortola, st kitts, dominica, st maarten, and barbados are our stops. Do you have any advice about these ports? what to do, where to eat? We are planning on doing the pirate party cruise in barbados, has anyone done it? Thanks Barbados is my favorite! We did an incredible tour through Glory Tours and the sea turtles were huge. Lunch was excellent. Of all the cruises and islands and tours we've done, this is my most memorable ever. Option 1 Our first stop on this unforgettable tour will be Harrisons Cave where you will travel through the winding tunnels in trams and make your way into the specially lighted caverns, view the majestic stalactites and stalagmites which have been growing from the floors and ceilings for many centuries. Cascading through the caves, the crystal blue waters form magnificent pools and waterfalls, Harrison's cave is guaranteed to be an experience of a lifetime. Then make your way up the Island's green hills down on to our spectacular East Coast. After enjoying these breathtaking sights & stops you will enjoy a quick lunch. Then we are off to the Wild life Reserve for a glimpse of those mischievous Barbados green tail monkeys. For the second part of your day take a swim with our friendly sea turtles, sail down the West Coast and snorkel off of one of our colorful reefs. Please be sure to wear your swimsuits and bring a beach towel for this excursion. In St Kitts, we had a blast doing the zipline; took a tour of the island in Dominica and have done various things in St Martin. The last time, we went over to the airport, which is right on the beach. There is a bar/restaurant there with flight arrivals posted. You can find out the arrival info ahead of time. The small beach is packed with people with cameras in hand as large planes come in almost on top of you. There are videos available on youtube of this. We did see a 747 come in and it is amazing how close you are because the end of the runway is right next to the beach, separated only by a narrow road and fence! The southern Caribbean is my favorite. Have fun!
