Room safes on the Vista

Twelve years ago we cruised on Conquest and I was disappointed that the safes worked by swiping a magnetic strip (like a credit card) to open and close the safe. So, we had to have a credit card out and about with us to use to reopen the safe when we returned. And, sure enough, the credit card fell out of my pocket and on to the deck. It was returned to me safely thru the ship. But, I didn't know this condition existed and had no option than an active CC on board. So, I'm trying to find out if this is how current Vista safes work. If so, I plan to bring an expired CC to use with the safe and will leave that hidden somewhere in my room. Can you advise me how current safes work?

The newer ships have the newer safe, code # 1234

Hi

Just wanted to mention, for those safes that do require a magnetic strip to lock, you can use ANY magnetic strip.

As mentioned an old Sign & Sail card will work, an AARP card. Most people are carrying cards that have magnetic strips that aren't bank cards. Don't forget that an expired credit card, still has your name and credit card # on it. It is just the expiry date that has changed.

For ships that use a magnetic strip, we use a sail & sign card from a different cruise line. It's easier to tell at a glance which one to use. I prefer the keypad, though, so that either one of us can open the safe without having to be sure we have the card on us. Now we use that other cruise line card to keep the lights from shutting off. I don't like to have to take my key card off when I am just running back to the cabin to grab something.
