HokiePoq Posted May 17, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2018 Unlike our last Viking cruise we have waited to book optional excursions until we get onboard. We have OBC to use and didn't want to have to buy future cruise certificates with the unused balance this time. They cautioned last time about being sold out but we found each and every one offered onboard. This time the excursions are disappearing from the website and it appears they have actually sold out. That has happened on ocean cruises but some inventory has been reserved for onboard purchase. Does anyone know if this is the case with Viking river cruises or is sold out totally sold out? Not sure how to resolve that issue in the future when having OBC to use up if you can't book the excursions you want once onboard. It's not like they have a great gift shop when you can spend the credits.
suspaul Posted May 17, 2018 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2018 We were recently on a Viking oceans cruise with friends who had a sizable amount of OBC. They booked their excursions prior to the trip and once onboard spoke to a rep who was able to change their excursions to use their OBC and they received a credit to their credit card for the excursions. Not sure if this is the same with river cruises. Sent from my iPad using Forums
philw1776 Posted May 17, 2018 #3 Share Posted May 17, 2018 Yes Sometimes cancellations, etc. free up slots. Check with the desk and see if you get lucky. You can also use OBC for an occasional cocktail although my bar bills tend to be tiny. But the best use of OBC is to buy a couple $200 future certificates for $100. 100% return on your money. They never expire and are transferrable.
Rare OneSixtyToOne Posted May 17, 2018 #4 Share Posted May 17, 2018 I've pre-booked excursions online and the OBC was applied to the excursion
HokiePoq Posted May 17, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted May 17, 2018 Thanks everyone....all good info. We didn't want to buy the certificates this time as we want to be able to choose what line we go on next time. With $400 on the table from our last cruise, it had to be Viking. We like Viking but would like to sample some of the others we've been reading about here.

Sent from my iPad using Forums Sometimes Ocean operations are different from River operations, so my only question would be, since they just added this feature to Oceans, is if someone could report that they have used it on a river cruise. Or maybe Viking will pop in and let us know if this new feature is available on River cruises as well.
