Pinnacle Caviar Serving Size?

Does anyone know what the serving size is for caviar in the Pinnacle? I know it's a $45 supplement, but that doesn't tell you much.

It could be a great deal - or not - depending on portion size. I'd consider a half once a great deal, BTW. Anything more than that and this guy's packing extra Champagne.

You may also want to know what type of caviar they are serving?

If it was something like lumpfish, you might not want to waste the Dom on that... prosecco will do fine. :D

It's listed as Oscietra on the menu, which is a variation of spelling Osetra. (This is just an alternative spelling.) The 3 main varieties are Beluga, Osetra, and Sevruga. This is order of most to least expensive. There's also Sterlet, but you don't see that as much.

What they're serving is Champagne-worthy, IMO. It's also DW's favorite. Chilled vodka is nice, too.

If it was something like lumpfish, you might not want to waste the $45! But it looks as if it's "real" caviar.

Ah interesting. Didn't expect Holland America to offers this. Good to know. :)

I have seen some farmed Ossetras go for as cheap as $50 or so per ounce, and they're alright. The golden ones sell for higher. The particular one I had a few months ago cost a bit more than $200, I think, for the one ounce. But I have seen them sold for more and less...

Seabourn served us the farmed kind. I wonder if Holland America will use the same kind. But if $45 is for the golden kind, that would be a steal.

  • 2 weeks later...

The caviar is Osetra served from a 1 oz jar. Quality is quite good. We paired ours with iced vodka earlier in the week, a la old school Russian style. When we have it next time, we plan to pair with a nice, vintage, low dosage Champagne.

It's good value for the price.

Thanks for the report and for being the "guinea pig". If I am in the mood for it I will order it when we go to the PG on our next cruise.

Do you think you might get a picture for us? Would love to see the presentation as well.

That's definitely worth the extra charge.

You can see the photo in this post:

The quality of the caviar was very good. The value was excellent. The presentation was "Meh." Please note that the photo is only my half of the caviar. My wife had an identical plate.

That's pretty good for what they charge. I need to tell my friends who cruise on HAL about this. Thanks!

I don't think the presentation is that bad. Looking through my albums, quite a few places also presented their caviar modestly. Here are 3 of them...

I will happily eat them no matter how they're dressed. :D

Excellent. I thought about posting pix from Daniel and Per Se in NYC, or from Rob Feenie's Lumiere in Vancouver, BC. Lumiere has sadly closed, :( but they had the coolest caviar presentation I've ever seen.

The only thing worse than an unimpressive caviar service is no caviar at all.

Oh I love food porn. Please do post the pics. :D

If you like caviar and enjoy food in general, you should try Seabourn. They have caviar available 24hrs. Their food isn't comparable to Daniel, but often very, very good. Actually the 1st pic was our room service breakfast on Seabourn.

Too funny! We started using Evernote Food a couple of years ago, but realized that we were starting to turn into "those people" who let their hot food get cold and their cold food get hot while waiting for just the right photo. ;) You know you have a problem when no one is allowed to eat until "you try one more shot, without the flash this time."

Haha! That precisely me! I want to see what I have eaten at a later time. :D

But I try to restrain myself these days, because I started feeling bad to see the whole table passing their plates down and wait for the pics taken. I try to do it discreetly, but a few times the waiters/managers (on land or ships), and even the purser on the plane, thought I was one of those undercover evaluators working for some sort of food/travel magazine. :p

There are a few restaurants that will email you photos of all of their dishes. It's to keep people from distracting other diners with flash photography, and to make sure that you get a professionally photographed version of their dishes.

Without knowing the actual brand name of the caviar, there is very little to go by only the price. At $45 for a 1-ounce serving, it is very inexpensive and doubtful to be of high quality. Most likely farmed from California, especially as HAL prides itself on using only sustainable seafood.
