On-Board the Crown Princess - Some Commentary

Disembarkation was slow for us in Quebec City

For us, disembarkation last Saturday in Quebec City was super fast. We even left the ship an hour earlier than scheduled (per the luggage tag) because we were told the luggage was already there to be picked up.

Just wondering.... if it's so cold and rainy are they still showing MUTS? Is anyone taking advantage of this if they are still showing movies?

Yes, but I do not know if anyone was actually out there seeing it on our cruise that ended 10/3.

Also, on the Sunday we were on board they showed on MUTS three NFL football games plus one on Monday night.

I just got off the Crown last weekend (same itinerary and direction as you). While I didn't notice the gangway times on the first day -- I thought everyone stayed on the ship in Brooklyn, lol -- it will probably be 6:30 PM for you. Every time we were in port, the signs showed crew had to be back one hour before sailing and passengers half-an-hour before sailing.

Just wondering, is there a reason most people do stay on the ship in Brooklyn? Just wondering about crime now that you mention this. We have never been to New York and only have that one day there. Since we don't have time to get over to Ellis Island and back, walking the bridge was a good option. Just wondering, is it safe for tourists to walk around and explore in Brooklyn? The main thing we want to do is walk the bridge. We are from the New Orleans area so we understand that one must use caution in any US city.

Yeah, those were the least-attended MUTS screenings I've ever seen, lol. I was out on the Lido deck a few times during our rainy days, and they were still playing movies but the only people I noticed watching them were the 3-4 people in the hot tubs immediately in front of the screen!

Did you leave early? I think the slowdowns only started later in the morning, as customs took longer than expected and caused a domino effect. I was supposed to leave with Silver 6 at 8:45 AM, but the rest of my party was in Red 5 (the last group at 11:00 AM) and our flight wasn't until mid-afternoon so we waited for the Red 5 group to be called. In the end we only left half-an-hour later than scheduled, but I think some of the earlier groups had been waiting a while longer.

Neil leaves when the ship docks in Brooklyn at the end of the current cruise.

I liked Neil -- he was our CD on our first Princess cruise in the Mediterranean last year -- but it was total deja vu having him on board again, from singing the Love Boat Theme at the end of the first show to the "mother of eight" joke. :p If I heard him joke about the casinos gratefully accepting donations one more time... :D

Just curious, is he leaving Princess or just changing ships again?

Well I wasn't making a crack about crime in NYC ;), just saying that most passengers wouldn't be motivated to leave the ship after just arriving (either from the airport or a pre-cruise stay in New York). Especially since the pier didn't appear to be close to anything... although I guess you found an activity to do!

The one nice thing about the location was that it afforded a good view of the Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty. I still would have preferred to board on that side, though -- then I'm sure lots of people would've gotten on and off, the pier being walking distance to all the sights in Manhattan.

I liked Neil ...

I overheard Neil talking to some other guests in the Intl Cafe during the TA last month--he indicated he would only be doing 5 weeks at a time in the future. Sounded like he had a project going back home. He's experienced at longer cruises and apparently that's what he'll be coming back for. Also, he married about 18 months ago, so perhaps he doesn't want to be gone from home for long stretches (his wife joined him in NYC on 9/23, as it was).

Those that posted they will be on the next few sailings can you report back who is taking Neil Chandler's place. I've cruised with him twice in the Mexican Riviera when he was Asst Cruise Director and then when he was promoted to Cruise Director. Curious about who will be on board next as we are on the Crown Nov. 14th for the Western Caribbean.

Thanks

We return on Nov. 7th to Ft. Lauderdale and I'm told the CD for ours will be Ron Goodman so I'm pretty sure he'll also be the one for your cruise since he just returned.

Our color tag was scheuled to meet at 9 AM. About 8:15 AM is when we left the ship. We were between scheduled groups, so there was no line at all for immigration and customs which was a less than 10 seconds formality.

Hi - we will also be on the Crown 10/23 Quebec to FLL - and have a few questions.

Can anyone tell me the name of the port in Quebec?

Does Princess always dock at the same port in NYC?

We would like to be able to pull up some google maps before leaving home and familiarize ourselves with the lay of the land.

Thanks!!

Hi PaulMJ, Hope you are still enjoying your cruise. Our friends Sue & Gus are onboard with you. Sue has a red scooter and is usually at all the trivia games, so if you see her tell her Eleanor says Hi:)

Have a safe trip home.

The cruise terminal in Brooklyn is called Red Hook, and AFAIK it's the only one Princess docks at for this itinerary (possibly for all their NY departures).

The terminal in Quebec City is simply the Port de Quebec cruise terminal. No matter which wharf you tie up to, you'll be on Dalhousie St directly opposite the Old Lower Town. I was very pleased with the location of the ship relative to the main attraction (i.e. the Old City); nothing got closer in the other ports!

Three NFL games on Sunday + Monday evening NFL game.

Oh, thank you so much. DH and I love football on MUTS and will spend all day Sunday watching the games. We skip the first formal night, eat at the Caribe Cafe, and then watch the Sunday night game. I know it's not for everyone, but we have a blast.
