Now this is on MSC and I know this is NCL which I usually cruise the most. But the idea horrifies me and I hope does not spread.

According to the article on AOL today, MSC is going to start scenting their entire ship with a Fruity smell???

I cannot imagine being stuck on a ship that smells everywhere of any particular persons choice of scent.

That would be HORRIBLE.

Just wondered what others thought of this idea.

I think this is horridly dangerous. I wouldn't worry about what it smelled like, but what the chemicals were that give off the scent. Way to many of our "normal VOCs" are extremely toxic and are airway irritants. As an asthmatic, I would stay far away. Besides, what odors are they trying to hide?

About a year and a half ago we were on the Dawn and noticed that every time we were in the theater, we smelled vanilla. Not a bad or strong smell but definitely there. This was a trip with rough seas.

The following year we were on the Dawn to Bermuda again but with smooth seas... and there was no smell. Wondering if the vanilla smell was used to help people handle the rough seas?

Though I voted I would avoid this, I am not 100% sure. i tend to avoid people with heavy perfume as some give me an instant migrane. But, a light smell? Maybe, maybe not.

I know the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Vegas has a unique smell. We do not like it, but it does not keep us from visiting.

It's probably the scent of pumped-in oxygen...designed to keep you awake & alert, and unaware that it's 3a.m. and you've lost the rent money! ;)

There are a few large retail stores that have a particular scent. I could always tell when I entered a local Mikasa (chinaware) shop, because of the very distinctive smell. I think they must have pumped it throgh the ventilation system.

Our local casino (or what passes for a casino here in Ontario -- it's attached to the harness race track) has a combination beach/pool (chlorine) smell that I'm sure is supposed to loosen up the patrons and make them feel like they are on holiday.

There is probably a whole scintific discipline devoted to scent and how it affects the average person.

Couldn't they just hand out cards upon embarkation? Then those who want to can partake of scratch-and-sniff sailing.

My mother, ever the wilderness camper, didn't like buildings decorated with "Canned Nature ala Union Carbide". I'm sure that if she got a whiff of a Fruitified cruise ship, she'd say what she always said in such situations: "It smells like a whorehouse on a Sunday morning".

I always wondered how she could make such authoritative assertions.

ROTFL-let's just hope she was part of the Saturday Morning Cleaning Crew and not there in any other capacity ;)

Having sailed MSC I certainly don't want to have a common smell that I might encounter daily dragging my memory back to them. DW and I endured 17 days of attitude/incompetence with them last December and have no desire to be reminded of the shipboard experiences. The only thing I can say concerning smell was that the customer service, daily entertainment, and addressing passenger issues really "stunk".

Rent money? I had rent money? Where'd it go? Oh, Craps. :D

I would avoid it because I have family members with allergies and breathing issues and wouldn't want to take a chance.

I've been in theme parks where they puff out vanilla smells near the cup cakes....and fallen for it!

I've travelled on Swedish ferries which I can recognise blindfold for the bitter coffee and the herb dill.

I can recognise the scent of chlorine as soon as I set foot in a Spanish airport.

And Italy is always garlic, coffee and red wine.- jocap.

What should NCL's smell be, do you think?

jocap.
