Windjammer: The buffet was okay if you stick to the basics and avoid anything with a sauce or the prepared dishes. The carving station had Prime Rib twice and other days there was beef, roast chicken and pork. They also had some nights a mixed grill option that was made to order. The breads and desserts are good and the sald bar and antipasto station have a good variety. They had lots of Indian dishes (curries and such) and many things you'd find in England like Shapard's Pie, Fish and Chips and even mushy peas! There was baked fish most nights but the sauces tasted like they came from a jar. They do a nice Pasta Bolognese, but the other pasta dishes didn't look so good.

There was always pizza, burgers and hot dogs for the kids.

The cafe had coffee cake, cookies and simple baguette sandwiches along with pizza. Pizza was not good.

Room service was very limited. You CAN NOT get items from the cafe or buffet delivered. Only pizza, ham sandwich, burger, chicken sandwich and not much else. They will deliver Johnny Rocket's, stromboli sandwiches (serves 2) and ice cream for a fee ranging from $4-$7. I ordered a pizza (only choice was cheese or pepperoni) and the artichoke dip. The hot dip was awful and the pizza not so good.

Had I not been traveling alone, I would have eaten in the MDR, so the options I had were what I chose. The waiters in the Windjammer were always happy to supply me with a tray to take my meals back to the cabin.

Ports: Sardinia

It was beastly hot and humid the day we were here and so miserable to be outside. Most shops are not air conditioned except the large dept. stores. I did see the bus to the beach, but not a city tour. I didn't see the Segway people until I was on the way back to the shuttle. I did not stay in town long.

Rome

Go ahead and take the 9Euro RT/return ticket into Rome ot save money, but know it is quite a hike from the shuttle drop off at the port entrance to the station. It is about a mile. It was pouring rain the day we were there and many people were soaked before they even boarded the train! Not a good way to start the day. The train is crowded and some people had to stand part of the way.

In hindsight, I think I wished I had taken a tour here even though they are expensive. On my own, I took a hop-on bus tour that took me to St. Peter's along the way. I did not have time to see inside the Vatican or the Colosseum. You need to allow 4 hours for the Vatican tours and by the time I got there it would have been cut too short to catch the train back. We took the first train in and by the time we arrived it was after 11:00. We were told to take a return train no later than 4:00 to insure we made the sail time of 6:30. That is not much time at all! An organized tour would have taken us from door to door, saving lots of time and ensuring we saw what we wanted. The 9E train and hop-on bus for 20E gave me a drive-by experience only. The ship offers a similar option for about $150 I think so if this is all you want, do it on your own and save the $$$. If you have your heart set on seeing more, take one of the guided options. If nothing else, I could have boarded a bus next to the ship and stayed dry as opposed to having to walk the mile to the train.

Do not miss the very last shop on the left as you re-enter the port area for super cheap phone and internet.

Corsica

This was my favorite place by far. The town was small and quaint - very walkable and relaxing after busy and crowded Rome. The daily market was fun to see and there were many places to sit and have a coffee or gelato. This is where the TI has a free Internet station if you need an e-mail fix. Do get off right away at 11:00 as the shops close for a few hours at 1:00. I dallied and did not get off until noon and everything was closing within a few minutes. They sound a very load horn at 1:00 and it was funny to see the pigeons scatter from the square!

Palma de Mallorca:

This is a pretty big city. The ship will start promoting shuttle tickets a couple days ahead. There is no free shuttle at this port. They were $12 return. I neglected to buy them when they were offered and a reminder came out in the Cruise Compass that they could be purchsed at the guest desk until 11:00. When I called the cruise desk they informed me I could buy them outside at the bus. I noticed a hop-on bus boarding across the street for $13. A guided tour for just $1 more. Then I saw a bus shelter and some folks waiting. A bus to the city center was about 1.5E so I took that. It dropped us off right in the main square and there were many options to catch the one that made the rounds back to the port. Now I know why they were so keen to pre-sell the shuttle tickets on the ship before people saw their options. This sort of tactic was very common. I mostly shopped here and got some beautiful pearls for my self and for gifts.

I found most of the posts here to be very helpful and used alot of the information during my cruise. Thank you everyone who has taken the time to contribute!! I hope my comments will be helpful to others, too.

  • 2 weeks later...

We just got off Adventure this morning. I have been reading the reviews all summer and was a bit apprehensive, as it turned out there was no need, we had a great time.

The passenger mix was more or less half British/Irish half Spanish with the usual sprinkling of other nationalities. The Spanish seemed very nice, no problems at all. Apparently the next month until the Transatlantic has a similar mix.

We thought the crew in general were very friendly and seemed to really work well as a team, cruise director was Anthony Richards who we'd never heard of before but we liked him very much. The production shows were excellent, some of the best we've seen.

Something that may be of interest to those cruising in the next few weeks. I had been monitoring the available cabins before we sailed and many were unsold including about 3/4 of the suites. We checked in early (around 10.45) and went straight to the pier coordinators desk. We were able to upgrade to an Owners suite from a D1 for $400. We had a choice of many cabins and were able to get 1314 on the hump. Apparently no automatic upgrades had been given even to Diamond plus, we spoke to one couple with 37 credits and it was the first time in 7 cruises they had not been upgraded.

To those asking about cigarettes, there is a Duty Free shop in the terminal after security selling tobacco and alcohol, I didn't look at the prices.

If anyone has specific questions ask away.

Julie

Hi Folks,

Well its only about 6weeks till we go hip hip hooray, bit of a daft question but I'm going to ask it anyway.

Everyone talks about tipping for drinks / room service etc I'm more than happy to do so, but did you all tip in $ (where did you get the coins from ???? ) or did you tip in Euros ?

Have plenty of euros left from previous holidays so not problem.

If I have $ notes can these be cashed in on the ship for coins ?

Evelyn.

I tipped with whatever was in my pockets, usually euros, the staff was always grateful.

We have almost 60 credits and have NEVER had an upgrade:eek: The couple you spoke to wouldn't happen to be from across the pond??? I think we Brits get a raw deal with RC.

I am so glad to have found this post ... the only reviews I have been able to find about this ship have been about the Caribbean so I was starting to wonder what the deal was with that!

My cruise isn't until May but it leaves out of Valencia Spain ... I couldn't be more excited to combine cruising with amazing European sight seeing.

Has anyone on these Med. itineraries booked independent excursions off the ship and if so, how were they and how did you find them?

I have just read your posts / reviews and was left feeling quite depressed. You seem to spend your whole time on vacation looking at ways to save money and avoiding any form of entertainment :)

We saw the Beatles act on Independence and that's what the Beatles did back in the day. They didn't run round the stage screaming. That was the Stones :)

As for the ice shows they are a little bit limited in terms of area (you are on board a ship), but both the shows on Independence were imaginative and engaging.

I can usually take or leave the production shows but found myself enjoying every one of them. By smuggling "Rum Runners" on board you will be able to drink alone in your cabin but isn't the whole point of going out for a drink to socialise with other guests? The same with dining in the main dining room. Slap yourself on a large table of other people, if they bore you to death then have the restaurant manager change your table until you find some people you click with. Or were you trying to avoid having to pay a gratuity to the MD staff at the end of the cruise?

Please don't take my comments as personal or in any way antagonistic, I merely happened to be browsing, saw the post and thought I'd say something. I can see if someone gets a cabin next to the disco or has all their ports of call cancelled hen they have problems but it seems to me none of those things happened.

A cabin steward hustling you out of the room so they can make it up? Never on my watch. We do what we want and the room gets sorted out when it suits us. We help the guys out by not trashing the place and putting the sign on the door when we go for breakfast so they know the room is available but never have I had someone encouraging me to get out so they can make up the room.

As for the captain's party I feel you missed a trick there. There was free booze!! You could have offset a few dollars from some of your purchased drinks by making the most of the freebies. If you are in the Crown and Anchor scheme you even get a second chance!

I'm not going to stand and defend the bar prices, they have definitely gone up over the years we've cruised, but the measures are generous to the point where you could almost make 2 drinks from 1 if you were watching the pennies.

The Internet is slow and expensive. This seems to be a complaint across all cruise ships no matter the company. The answer could be to switch off for a week. Have a holiday.........

Anyway, I genuinely wish you all the best and once again please don't take my comments personally, see them more as a general outburst of hot air spurred on by your posts.

Keep smiling

Henry

Good Afternoon from wet & windy Glasgow.

Only 36 days 2 go, but haven't booked hotel in MALAGA yet,

any suggestions, would love to be near the port & I assume the ship won't sell cigs or tobacco, so I guess OH will have to find a tabac & buy it b4fore he sails.

I know you can't take alcohol on board, but I guess its alright to take your own cigs / tobacco on ?

No smoking in cabins are there dedicated smoking areas on board ?

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

We stayed at the Silken right across the street from the Barcelo. I do NOT recommend it for one reason mostly: all the rooms reek of smoke. The Barcelo in the train station looked great to me when we saw it, and having stayed at Barcelos both in Bilbao and Madrid, we like the chain, so it would have been a better choice for us I think. Enjoy your cruise!

Well less than 3 weeks to go, still haven't booked hotel, but probably going to book the Hotel Vegas, has a few good comments & more importantly fits the budget for us.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Thanx for all your hard work on this thread & info you have provided:)

I assume this thread will wind down when the last of us leave the 'adventure' in good old Barcelona.:(

Hello,

Cublet is staying in the Hotel Don Curro 16th & 23rd November. It seems popular with RCCL clients.

Henry,

I am so sorry you were depressed by my posts. They were not intended to represent a bad experience. Cruises are meant to be taken by couples. Everything about them is focused on that. I was on my own and so it was a different experience.

Part of the reason I was focused on saving money was that I have been out of work for several months. The cruise was paid for long before I lost my job - a year in advance. Even though I could have recouped part of the cruise cost I would have lost nearly all of what I had paid for airfare and my follow on trip within Spain (hotel, car, rail and other pre-paid expenses) so I had no choice but to do the trip on a budget. My enjoyment of wine with dinner or a cocktail at sunset would have been a major expense in this case based on the cruise's policies and costs. As for the internet, I was obligated to continue my job search during my time away. It was critical for me to be in contact with messages by phone and e-mail and I found this very frustrating. To be honest, even if I had been working, I make it a habit to be in contact. I'd rather know all is well than blissfully while away while Rome burns.

I have only been on one cruise before and that was with my parents in celebration of a big anniversary. I never intended to accompany them, But they wanted me along and I ended up serving as the tour guide in the ports (Baltic) and paying for my passage by saving the expense of the shore excursions. I did join them in the MDR for a couple meals, but despite being with family I always felt like a third wheel. Other couples did not seem to fancy having a single added to the table. The husbands were attentive and the wives seemed out of sorts :-) When I did go out to the bars and nightclubs I got the same reaction. I usually ended up talking to the bartenders and was mortified when a kindly "gentleman escort" asked me to dance. (You know, the ones who are given passage to entertain the elderly females -and being in my early thirties, I was far from elderly - haha. Now THAT was depressing!)

I travel alot for business and do not care to dine solo. It is uncomfortable and unpleasant to me. Even with a book to read, people stare in the fine dining establishments at a solo diner. I was fine with enjoying my meals with a good book or movie in my cabin. I wish I had had some of the choices from the MDR, but it was ok. Like I said in my review - it was my choice. I did not tip any dining personnel as I did not use the services. I did tip everyone else.

I did not avoid entertainment. I just did not find what was offered to my liking. I would have preferred lectures on the history of the area, some classical music and maybe some art history - think of what wonderful preperation a trip to Rome would have been with a feature on art and architechture. The "enrichment" activities of this sailing were sorely lacking. I do not care for karioke or belly flop contests. I am not on Spring Break. I stand by my comments on the shows. They were ameturish to me. I did not mean the Beatles show was not "wild" with them running to and fro. It was just not very loud or engaging. I could hear myself and every one of my neighbors singing more clearly than the performers themselves and that took some of the experience away. It did not feel like a concert and lacked energy. The ice show was ok, not spectacular. Single jumps and props do not showcase talent. I was bored.

I did feel my cabin steward was anxious for me to go out and about. He often inquired when I would be leaving the room. A couple times I just told him to bring me some fresh ice and no attention to the room was needed. I had my morning coffee by room service and enjoyed the evenings on the balcony, perhaps not the norm for his other guests. As I said, I did tip him for more than one, but I am sure they count on at least tips for two per room.

I am not a member of any loyalty program. This was my first time on RCI, so I did not have access to the special parties. If I did and missed it, it is news to me.

I do not take offense by any of your comments. I just don't think cruising is for me. Between the cost of the single suppliments and the other aspects which do not favor solo travelers, I will take vacations on land. (The reason I booked this trip was because I was interested in the ports of call and it was an efficient way to see them.)

Take care and enjoy your cruises to come.

Are you going on the 23rd? I'm on that cruise with my mother. We're staying at the Molina Lario Hotel. My mum has stayed there before for a long weekend and says it's very good. Booked with Travel Republic I think.

Does the Adventure dock at the same part of the port as Independence? Can you get a taxi down to it? My husband and I walked from the ship (Indy) to the town when it was in port but as we'll have lugage I'm assuming taxis will go right there?

Hi

I returned yesterday from one of the 5 night Adventure cruises to Madeira and Tenerife. If anyone has any questions I will try my best to answer them.

Just a few observations to add to recent reviews - apart from the Spanish there were lots of Brits/Irish on board and a fair amount of Canadians, all usually found in the bars, the nightclub and casino. ;) I don't know what the ratio's were but there were also other Europeans, all very friendly. The Spanish seemed to prefer hanging out in the Promenade Cafe or the Windjammer and I'm sorry to say but as a whole they did come across as fairly rude and oblivious to anyone else around them.

We did My Time Dining again but didn't find it as flexible as on the Liberty, we got "told off" a couple of times for not making reservations which I found very unnecessary, and I'm sorry but it's my holiday and we'll dine when we feel like it if that's the option we took. It's not like we were picky, we were happy to share a table or wait 10/15 mins, so I really didn't appreciate the attitude we got from one of the staff on the MTD desk. However, we were never asked to make reservations in advance and apart from one night always seated straight away. The MTD area did seem very busy compared with a Caribbean cruise though, and maybe more people were eating in the main dining room than had been expected. Anyway, the two nights we shared tables we were seated on larger tables with English and Irish people who were all lovely, so it made up for the hassle getting into the dining room. We had different waiters every night and they were all great.

Unlike the Caribbean cruise I took in May, the Nightclub (Jesters) was busy every night we went in there after 1am and they were often kicking people out at 3.30am. In fact most of the bars seemed a lot more busy than they were in the Caribbean, which was great, there was a really fun vibe.

I did find this cruise much more smokey, but expected that to be the case. The casino was smoke-free on formal night (2nd night) which annoyed my smoking boyfriend but I found much more pleasant :D and you could smoke in every bar except the Schooner I think.

I found the food to be better on this cruise, especially the desserts which although weren't great were better than on the Liberty. Spanish and Brits were definitely catered for - there was always at least one Spanish dish in the Windjammer (paella usually which varied from good to yuck), plus proper bacon, shepherds pie, trifle etc for the Brits. The trifle looked awful but they had Steak & Kidney pie one day which was actually really nice, I was shocked. There were also curries most day's, which I don't like so can't comment there. They had the usual carvery - turkey, beef, pork etc plus meatloaf one day which was shockingly bad. One night in the main dining room the menu seemed completely different to previous menu's posted, I think it might have been night 4 - there was roast beef, roast chicken and trifle. I took a pic of the menu that night if anyone wants to know more. Other than that the menu's seemed the same as usual, the formal prime rib menu was on night 2 and Italian night was the third night.

For anyone taking the same cruise in a few day's time, there was definitely no Spanish tax a couple of hours after departing Malaga (I think they said 12 nautical miles) on drinks, and the shops were open whenever we weren't in port.

Anyway, we had a great time. It was our first Med cruise but we would definitely do another in the future. :)

We also just returned from the same 5 nighter.

We had a great time just relaxing and enjoying the trip.

I agree with BeeBerry there was a good mix of nationalities, including alot of Spanish but we personally had no issues with them being rude, but then I speak a little spanish so could get them to move if needed! ;)

We also did MTD and had the same experience as BeeBerry, we found it quite inflexible compared to our previous experiences on Royal.

When leaving the MDR after dinner that night we would book our slot for the coming evening.

We wanted 8pm or around then and everytime were told basically 'No' this was not suitable for them! So we ended up eating at 1845/1900 and the latest time we could get was 1930 (once), were not so happy with this and it was mentioned on the comment card.

We did get table for 2 most nights apart from the nights we chose to dine with a couple we met on board who were also MTD.

Smoking was more noticable for us this trip, we didn't use Jester's due to this. The Casino was also not used as much due to it allowing smoking, as was the pub on the Promenade.

We did go in the Casino on the Non smoking (formal) night but on the other nights after 5/10 mins we found it to smokey for us. (I'm an ex smoker and partner doesn't smoke)

I felt the food was hit and miss on this trip, but always found something to eat and some of the food was excellent.

There was no VAT on this trip so items in the gift shops and the photo's had no extra tax which was great. Also no tax on the treatments in the Spa was also a bonus. Especially as I made a large purchase for myself in the Jewellery shop, saving the tax on that was great :D

There still is the 15% gratuity added to drinks and Spa treatments.

Free shuttle from ship to town in Tenerife but usual charge of $6 per person each way to get into Funchal.

Tip to cruisers - there are taxi's from ship to centre of Funchal at 7.50 Euro's each way so cheaper than the shuttle for 4 people. We met up with a couple on board and shared a taxi with them.

This is our 3rd Med cruise with Royal, loved the ship and didn't notice too much wear and tear, only real noticable thing was the balcony on our cabin which was in need of a touch up.

We will be cruising again, only another 234 days to wait!

Hello there

We went out on Adventure on 29th October 2010 to Ajaccio and Toulon - if you would like to read my review you hopefully will find at:-

http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=74643

Basically it was a great cruise, lots of fun and lots to do. Similar issues to others posted but nothing major. Would def go out of Malaga again but not northwards at this time of year, definitely to the Canaries for the weather plus the tax benefits.

I would be happy to answer any questions.

Many thanks.

Hello everyone sailing on 23rd November.

I would like to get together with other people on this cruise. The roll call is not very active and there will be no Meet & Mingle meeting as it's only a 5 day cruise.

Let's meet on Wednesday (sea day) at 11.00 am at the Sports Bar on the Promenade (I hear there's always plenty of room). Let me know if you are interested, or just turn up.

Sounds like a good idea, I'm up for it & hope to see you (provided I manage to find the sports lounge)

Not sure what your concerns are, but the Spanish and their kids weren't any trouble to me. They tend to kiss and hug them a lot and smiles and none of that snapping at kids that French people tend to do. And you can eat whenever you want. My Time was perfect for us because we could waltz in at 7:30-7:45pm and get seated right away. The Spaniards wanted to eat much later. It's a great cruise, enjoy!

Now that Adventure is back in the Med for the summer am hoping to revive this thread to allow cruisers share experiences and feedback. We will be sailing her late summer and I have some questions that I hope those who have sailed her so far, or will be doing so over the next number of weeks will be able to contribute to. I know it's a bucket of questions so thanks in advance if you can help out...

What nights are the ice shows on ?

When are the two formal nights ?

What time is the Captain’s party ?

When day of the week and time is the welcome back party for repeat cruisers ?

Is there a separate welcome back party for emearld, what night and time is it ?

Are they still offering the bucket of beer promotion they ran last summer ?

Are they still adding 8% Spainsh tax on bar bills ?

What additional rate of tax are they adding to Spa services?

What time does the 1st show and 2nd show start at ?

Any copies of the compass out there ??

What time does the Promenade cafe open in the morning ?

What % tax is added onto dinner in Portofino’s
