bring jewelry or not?

Hello, all :)

Brand new...just found this website earlier today! I am 27 years old and have been on almost ten cruises. Growing up I was very lucky with my parents and was taken on my first cruise when I was 5 and we go on them now whenever any of us kids graduate highschool, and sometimes just because :) I am very lucky for the life they let me have :)

This summer, on June 28th, I will be going on one last cruise with my family. My baby brother (I have two other brothers, not that that matters lol) graduates from highschool and I will be getting married next summer so it's like one last "hurrah" before we all go our separate ways. I am recently engaged, as of this past December and have a beautiful ring that stays on my finger. More than anything I want to be able to wear this ring...my question is this....is it okay to take an expensive piece of jewelry or should I just leave it home? Any other cruise I've been on it's been costume jewelry, so I never really put much thought into it. I've bought my expensive purses before and nobody ever touched them. I wouldn't wear my ring when in the pools and on the beaches because I am afraid of what salt water would do to the diamond, so it'd be back in my room. Has anyone ever had issues or heard of issues of rings or jewelry being stolen when left in the room? I can't remember if any of the rooms have safes? I feel naked when not wearing it, but at the same time I would really like coming back with the ring on my finger and not in someone else's pocket? My fiance said he doesn't see a problem, my parents say it could be and other people have heard stories. What would you recommend?

Thanks! :)

PS. We are looking at a cruise next year for our honeymoon too! :D

Congratulations on your engagement. My DH and I have opal set in gold as our wedding bands so they are fragile; we leave them in the safe when we are heading to the casino or on shore but do wear them for dinner, etc. We have been on over 20 cruises and travelled a lot and have never experienced a problem with using a safe on the ship or in a hotel room.

P.S. our cruising experience is limited to RCL and they have safes in all cabins.

You jewelry is safer on your body than back on the ship. Unless you lock it in the safe. But as far as diamonds go, there isn't anything in pools or ocean that will harm it. As long as it fits well, won't slip off your finger, wear it in good health. EM

Salt water will not damage a diamond! IMO, jewelry is to wear. It usually gets lost when you take it on and off. You may want to consider getting an insurance policy for this ring.

I always wear my rings.

Unless you are certain that the stones in your rings are really fragile -- like someone described their opals -- the water is NOT going to hurt them! My wedding and engagement rings have diamonds (teeny-tiny diamonds..not that it matters! :p )..and they've been on my fingers for 42 years, now...through salt, sand, grit, grime, "in sickness and in health", without incident. I think you'll be fine just leaving it on -- assuming it fits properly and won't slide off in the water, or if you put on too much lotion or something! :p

There are safes in the room..and so long as you know how to close them securely (we've messed that up more than once!), they're quite secure. And I really haven't heard "horror stories" of people getting their jewelry stolen, as much as I have heard of folks taking their rings off and leaving them somewhere, like on the sink in the public bathrooms!

I'd be more concerned about leaving them in the cabin -- not in the safe, but just lying around -- where people passing by could see them and snatch them. The crew is the least likely to steal -- they could lose their jobs..something no one wants to have happen.

My wedding and engagement rings are probably the most expensive jewelry I take, though. I'm just too afraid I'll lose some of the rest of it, being in unfamiliar surroundings, taking it on/off. My rings pretty much stay on my fingers, so I just don't worry about them.

Our insurance agent told us the safest place for a ring is on your finger. Don't take it off as that is when most are lost or stolen. Make sure your ring is insured. We have marine insurance that will cover my rings no matter where we go.

As with just about everything you will get lots of opinions on this subject because each person takes a different approach. My wife and I travel extensively and over time our views on this have changed as we have seen problems when people wear jewelry off the ship. So, here is my advice.

Wear the ring on the ship. But when you are off the ship keep the ring locked in the safe. If you wear the ring off the ship you run the risk of having it stolen or losing it. We find that when we are in port it is best to keep all jewelry except for an inexpensive watch that I wear and some very plain earings that my wife wears on the ship so we are not targets for crime.

As I say, each person does what they want but we truly believe this is the prudent things to do.

There are certain times in life to be more cautious and we think not wearing expensive jewelry in port is one of those.

This ^^^^. The quickest way to lose a precious ring either on a cruise or anywhere else is to keep taking it on and off. Diamonds do not dissolve in water! Wear it and enjoy it.

However, I also agree with Keith's common sense advice not to wear expensive jewellery when ashore or on excursions so leave valuables in your cabin safe.

I want to restate something.

All rings line most things are not created equally.

We do not know what kind of ring (and how expensive it is) that the OP has.

Some jewelry makes one a target to crime off the ship, particularly traveling to unfamiliar places whether that is outside the continental USA or outside.

And, while it's nice to have the ring insured if the ring or other jewelry makes you a target for a thief it is not only the ring that could be stolen but you yourself could be injured or something worse can happen.

So, to the OP you first stated in your post that you plan to keep the ring on the ship. That is a great idea. Yes, the rooms all have safes.

Each night my wife puts the ring in the safe as we do our other expensive jewelry. If we have a sea day then she puts the ring on her hand and then wears it on the ship that day. And then at night before we go to sleep she puts it in the safe along with other jewelry and locks it up. If we have a day at port, it just stays locked in the safe until that evening when we get read for dinner.

I do not agree with the statements that jewelry is meant to wear all of the time. There are certain sports which one plays that the jewelry should not be worn including an engagement ring and when visiting unfamiliar places it is not a good idea to wear expensive jewelry. Again, you can insure the jewelry but that doesn't prevent someone from doing harm to you to get the jewelry.

Again, no one knows what type of engagment ring you have and it could be quite a bit different than what they have. And regardless, I believe that it is better to keep the jewelry on board in the safe.

Enjoy the cruise and in the end know that some will tell you it is fine to wear it off the ship and others will say leave it locked up. So, you will have to make the decision that you think is best.

Thanks, everyone! I've never actually had a big diamond until now (my promise ring was a diamond but significantly smaller) and wasn't sure how the salt water and such would take to it :) I remember in past cruises having safes, but I didn't particularly remember the last time when I was on Grandeur of the Seas (that's the ship I'll be on again next month) because I didn't really have anything worthy of putting in the safe.

Thanks, again :D

First, congratulations on your engagement!

Now, my opinions (for what they are worth). You asked if you should take the ring or just leave it at home? If you leave it at home, are you going to worry the whole time you are away that someone will break in the house and steal it? If you bring it with you and you leave it in the safe (if there is not a safe, this is a no brainer - wear the ring all of the time) while you are in port, are you going to worry it will be stolen anyway? If you wear it while in port, are you going to worry someone is going to try to steal it? Only you can answer which would give you the most peace of mind.

As others have said, the salt water and sand will not harm the ring (you might need to clean it when you get home though!). If wearing in port makes you feel safest (and there are pros and cons to this), you can always turn the ring "around" so the diamond is in the palm of your hand and it just looks like you have a simple band on to the casual observer - keeping your hand in a fist helps hide it as well.

Whatever you do, have fun on this last hurrah with your family!

I always wear my diamond ring, even in the water. I also wear it while gardening, etc. Do not fret, as mentioned above, the saltwater will not harm a diamond nor gold.

One thing, though, do you have it insured? Insuring a diamond is very cheap, and well worth the peace of mind. Not that I think you will lose it on the cruise, but there are times that diamonds just "fall out". (Rare, but things can happen.)

Congrats on the engagement, and being lucky enough to be born into your family!!!

My dad said my ring should fall under our house insurance because of what it is valued at...at least that's how I understood it :)

Thanks for the congrats, also! Wedding planning is so much FUN! :D

you've given yourself your answer, wear your promise ring on the cruise and leave the bigger one at home in the safe, if you have one.;)

I lost a ring taking it off and leaving it in the bathroom unit on a shio once, never saw it again. There's no way to check the drains while at sea to see if the ring got stuck in the plumbing.

I'll be taking cheap cheerful costume jewellery with me, and leaving my cherished stuff at home.:)

I always wear my wedding and engagement rings. I only take them off to have them cleaned or when I have surgery.

Yep - this. I even train horses with it on. The only thing I will be leaving at home is my mother's engagement ring that I normally wear on my right hand. It's big and clunky so I'll just find something smaller and pretty instead. :)

I'd wear it with good health if I were you. :)

I have an opal engagement ring that I rarely wear because it's fragile. but the $20 monty wards wedding band rarely comes off.

The best advise I ever got was from the jeweler who sold us my diamond engagment ring. He said to never take it off except to clean it. I still have the ring 30 years later (I have the prongs checked yearly or so). I also have my mother's diamond/wedding band, which I wear on my right hand. As has been mentioned here, I turn my ring towards my palm when I travel (heck, I even do it when riding the T to work in Boston!) Works for me and I am comfortable with it. Congrats on your engagement!

I recommend verifying with your insurance agent that your ring is covered, and to what extent and under what circumstances. Many homeowners policies will have limited or zero coverage for valuable personal property, and losses are subject to the policy deductible.

OTOH, specific valuable personal property coverage is relatively inexpensive and provides for full replacement value not subject to deductible. It is very useful for items usually excluded from standard homeowners policies such as jewelry, coin collections, stamp collections, cameras, fine artwork, musical instruments, etc.

I like the reasoning Shorex brings out in his post above. One of our best friends works in a Government Insurance Agency arm and she has helped us to understand the limitations of what is covered by home insurance.

Now, when we purchase a more valuable item, we also purchase seperate insurance for that item. It only adds a dollar or two to the cost of our policy but it allows us to have a lot more peace of mind when doing things like travelling...knowing that the things we have invested more in are properly covered.

Unless your ring is relatively inexpensive this will not be the case and there are quite a few limitations on a lost of the ring or the stone.

I would check with the insurance company based on the value of the ring. Assuming the value is reasonably high you will need to purchase

additional insurance for the ring which would be added to your homeowner's insurance. They will need to see the appraisal of the ring.

I wear my wedding set and have never had a problem. I also bring a diamond bracelet and earrings on cruises for wear during dinners and evening events. I do not wear these ashore, but lock them in the room safe. Although I don't do "formal", I do like to wear the nice jewelry that I have.
