derf5585 Posted June 15, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 15, 2010 Bed by balcony, Bed by shower, Bed on balcony Advantages and disadvantages of either. And can the bed be moved where you want it?
Orator Posted June 15, 2010 #2 Share Posted June 15, 2010 I'll be interested in seeing how others answer. I prefer the bed near the bathroom. I've noticed that when the bed was placed near the balcony there was a tendency for people to hit their legs against the front as they passed. Thought it was only spastic me, but noticed others hitting it as well. There are areas of the closet that are more difficult to reach no matter what bed position. Don't think that you could switch bed position since the bed wall is extended behind bed.
Wine-O Posted June 15, 2010 #3 Share Posted June 15, 2010 Bed by balcony, Bed by shower, Bed on balcony Advantages and disadvantages of either. And can the bed be moved where you want it? On the S-Class ships, you can't move them -- it's either one or the other for the standard balcony cabins. We like bed by bath as the living area opens up onto the balcony -- it seems more spacious, especially if you have a large angled balcony and do entertaining. Xport Posted June 15, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 15, 2010 I generally cruise solo and, when I do, I'm indifferent as to whether the bed is adjacent to the verandah or the bath... But a word of warning if two are cruising, the bed is near the bath, and it is converted to twins... Once they split the bed, its components are shifted slightly to the left and right with just enough separation between the two to accommodate the two small night tables that usually flank the larger bed on each side... And when that's done, there is only miniscule walking space left to access the closet... I've not sailed in a cabin with twin beds nearer the verandah... But I'm guessing that, even if that very narrow walking space is adjacent to the door, it would be preferable--at least for me--in that, over the course of a day, access to the closet is likely to be more frequent than is access to the verandah... celebritydave Posted June 15, 2010 #5 Share Posted June 15, 2010 I agree too. the bed by the bath seems to make the cabin larger, and it is nice to sit on couch and be close to the window. We always get this configuration. Before the S clas ships, the bed was almost always by the bath, and most people seemed to be ok with that. WINDSONG2 Posted June 15, 2010 #8 Share Posted June 15, 2010 Before going on our recent Eclipse cruise, I really hoped the bed would be nearer the bathroom. It wasn't, it was nearer the balcony. We had no problems negotiation round the bottom of the bed and by the end of the cruise prefered the position of bed to be nearer the balcony as we could lie in bed and enjoy the view. We are hoping that it will be in the same position when we go on Eclipse again in October but as we are in a different cabin we must wait and see. Nearer the balcony or bathroom, really doesn't matter - the ship is great.

You can look at the deck plans on the Celebrity site and you can tell ahead of time where the bed is positioned -- then you can change to another stateroom in your class with the bed by the balcony. whitelilly Posted June 15, 2010 #11 Share Posted June 15, 2010 I've had both and I prefer by the bath. Feels more spacious and I wasn't in my husband's way doing hair and makeup. We have opted for neear the bath on our uocoming Aug. cruise
nadalina Posted June 15, 2010 #12 Share Posted June 15, 2010 Just returned from the Solstice and our beds were near the balcony but I would have much preferred having them be near the bathroom because of what the others have said about having a more open area to open up to the balcony but also because it would make it easier to access the closet, especially the floor area of the closet where we two women kept our numerous pairs of shoes. At least we could have sat on the bed and reached our shoes easily but most of the time we ended up getting down on our knees to find the shoes we wanted because the arm of the sofa was too high to sit on and there wasn't enough space in between the sofa and the closet to bend down to see well..... especially if you have long hanging clothes. Next time I'll try to make sure I reserve a cabin with the beds near the bathroom. That's just another great benefit to the S-Class cabin matrix so generously created and updated for us. Gracie115 Posted June 15, 2010 #14 Share Posted June 15, 2010 We really liked the bed near the balcony on our Solstice cruise. It opened the room up more and made getting ready for dinner or whatever just easier. Didn't have to "get around the bed" to have space to dress. It seemed to make it easier to keep "clutter" down to a minimum too. Now it wouldn't matter to us if we wound up with the bed near the bathroom just after having experienced the opposite we found we liked it.... Shoot as long as there's a bed and it's on a ship it can be anywhere!!!:D
Rare GeorgiaPeach51 Posted June 15, 2010 #15 Share Posted June 15, 2010 Interesting to see all the opinions about this! My 2 cents is this: we had the bed by the balcony. Having not had the bed near the bath it's hard to make a comparisonr, but I am pretty sure it would be to have the bed near the bath. If you need to get up in the night, if you are the person nearest the veranda, as I was, you have to get up and feel your way past the drapes, tiptoe around the end of the bed, tripping over the bedspread that has fallen to the floor, feel your way past the coffee table, desk, etc. By the time I did all that, I was always thoroughly awake. I should mention that I wear contacts and am blind as a bat with them out! :)
FinelyCruising Posted June 15, 2010 #16 Share Posted June 15, 2010 Our preference is bed by balcony for two reasons already mentioned. 1. Opens up the room 2. Nothing like sleeping with the breeze covering your soul. :)
Jdell Posted June 15, 2010 #17 Share Posted June 15, 2010 I am interested in the same answer as one of the other posters. Someone mentioned there's a way to tell where the bed will be located by the deck plan. Can someone shed more light on that? I have no idea how to figure this out in advance (if it's possible). blubionda Posted June 16, 2010 #20 Share Posted June 16, 2010 I've had the opportunity to try both on Solstice (#1200 - by bath and #1206 - by balcony). I thought I would have preferred by bath for reasons mentioned earlier, but we actually didn't mind the bed by the balcony (I say "we" but I'm the only one who cares in our cabin). In fact, last trip was bed by balcony and I found it made for a lot of convenience to have sink, vanity and closet all together vs. having to go around the bed while getting ready for dinner (think Gracie mentioned this benefit previously). I found that despite my thinking I would have a strong preference, by the 2nd day you've basically adjusted to whichever set up you have and it really works either way! coasterwiggs Posted June 16, 2010 #21 Share Posted June 16, 2010 I prefer the bed near the balcony. I retire early and hubby stays out later in the casino. I find that his return doesn't disrupt my sleep if the bed is by the balcony. He can come in and have the sitting area to himself before he comes to bed. When the bed is nearer the bathroom, he has to squeeze by the bed to get to the sitting area, then squeeze back by to go to the bathroom, etc. All that tiptoeing by the front of the bed wakes me up, lol. derf5585 Posted June 16, 2010 Author #22 Share Posted June 16, 2010 This spreadsheet is for Solstice Class ships, is there anything similar for Millenium Class? I got this from the roll call. Do not know if there is one for the M-class. Thanks all youse cruisecritiers for all your answers. I looks as if they should have put the bed equal distance between the balcony and the bath. A morbid thought. If one gets sick a bed near the toilet would be better.
Infi Posted June 16, 2010 #23 Share Posted June 16, 2010 I've said it before, but I think it bears repeating here. The bed location is not the be-all, end-all, of your vacation as some of the posters on here make it out to be. The room is the exact same size regardless of where the bed is - it's all perception, anyway. I have had both configurations and did not prefer one over the other, or see much difference in the perceived spaciousness. No matter which configuration you get (even if you planned for the opposite), you'll enjoy your cruise.

Have not tried bed by balcony but would try to avoid this configuration as we liked having the couch and desk area near the balcony door to enjoy the view. Also, if you want the balcony door open while sleeping, it is not too drafty.
nadalina Posted June 16, 2010 #25 Share Posted June 16, 2010 Inquiring mimes want to knowHow many pairs of shoes did you bring? Hi, derf5585. I took 13 pairs plus the ones I wore and my 16-year-old granddaughter took 12 pairs. But, believe it or not, though I admit to being embarrassed to admit this, the 13 pairs is actually DOWN from what I used to take! I just never know what I'm going to feel like wearing at any given time and just love having my options. Peggy
