But remember, you will have CENTURY leaving at 1845 so there will be a Celebrity ship out there;)

Putterdude Posted July 6, 2010 Author #6 Share Posted July 6, 2010 Doesn't she leave at 17:00? You are correct, but I live up the coast from Vancouver and she goes by my door about 1845 +/-, that said I am a bit sorry that I started this thread, I thought that might be a bit of nostalgia expressed by some of on the "Wet Coast" who have a connection with the Mercury and the time she has spent going to Alaska and Pacific Coastals. Kapricorn Posted July 6, 2010 #7 Share Posted July 6, 2010 I'm a Vancouverite, and will be aboard Mercury for my 15th time next September, to Alaska. She has been my home-away-from-home for the past several years, and I will greatly miss her when she is gone. She has a happy-ship vibe which I do not often see aboard other cruise ships. Have you ever been aboard her, or just observed her sail by your place? Donald.
Putterdude Posted July 6, 2010 Author #8 Share Posted July 6, 2010 Yes, we have sailed on her...Aug '07 so I am one of legions of her fans...and yes I am going to miss her....fogged up windows in the Navigators Lounge and all.
Kapricorn Posted July 6, 2010 #9 Share Posted July 6, 2010 These windows were still fogged up during my cruise last May. I just find a window that is clear. :) But, I am on the open decks oftener than in Navigators Lounge. Donald.
dmwnc1959 Posted July 6, 2010 #10 Share Posted July 6, 2010 Although the CENTURY will be replacing MERCURY in most of her current itineraries I have always liked the MERCURY more. Sure the two are considered 'sisterships', but MERCURY was a more vibrant and her Navigators Lounge felt larger. Having been on all three I would have to say MERCURY and GALAXY were among my favorite cruise experiences. I did a 12-night on GALAXY to Alaska so that combination wins out as one of my all time favorites, but I will miss the MERCURY also. There is a definite profile difference now with CENTURY's balconies making her look busy and less sleek than MERCURY. It's nice that Celebrity is making the gesture to keep a 'small' ship still active in today's market of 100,000 ton megaships.

Yes...I feel the same way at the pier every sunday this year....She's just a few weeks away from ''never again in this port''......At least, we'll ''escort'' her part of the way to Baltimore in October: we're booked on the SanDiego sailing 1st October. We ought to ''start a vigil '' 2nd sunday of August!! Cheers
c-legs Posted July 6, 2010 #12 Share Posted July 6, 2010 and yes I am going to miss her....fogged up windows in the Navigators Lounge and all. I was shocked to see that most ( except 2 on the starboard side portion) fogged up window panes have actually been replaced !!!! Yes, they were bad already when we first sailed with her Dec06 SanDiego-Panama canal-Miami. ...and stayed that way even well beyond her semi-major drydock at Hunter's Yards SanFransisco April 07. She's looking spiffy now, when you look at her ''right in the face''.... But...she'll be missed Cheers
c-legs Posted July 6, 2010 #13 Share Posted July 6, 2010 PUTTERDUDE Thanks for starting that thread. It will hopefully build up to a nice ''send-off'' over the next few weeks for that grand ol'dame of the fleet. Cheers
dmwnc1959 Posted July 6, 2010 #14 Share Posted July 6, 2010 I think it would be MUCH APPRECIATED for all those going on MERCURY in the next few months to come back with pictures for the rest of us to rekindle some great memories!!!! Most all my pictures are in storage in North Carolina and it would be nice to see her in her current state before she leaves the fleet in February for a total makeover. Cheers This is great news...maybe the German sub said "fix'm or we don't take her"...I don't don't think that there a better place to view the Alaska scenery than from the Navigators Lounge on the Merc. MFJune Posted July 6, 2010 #16 Share Posted July 6, 2010 Pudderdude, Don't be sorry for starting the thread. Reading about former passengers' fondness for the Mercury makes me feel fortunate to be one of the last to view the British Columbia coastline from her decks. I asked about the time to make sure I'm going on the right ship! I will be pleased to take photos. According to the Role Call there are only 4 of us going so it should be easy to capture the details. Putterdude Posted July 7, 2010 Author #17 Share Posted July 7, 2010 Thanks for the encouragement ... after the first few posts I thought perhaps I headed down the wrong path, however the real fans of the Merc have risen to the top.:) I envy those who are on her last few cruises...unfortunately our cruise card is rather full for the net 5 or 6 months, perhaps if we had known earlier about the departure of the Merc from the fleet we may have booked her. starlake Posted July 7, 2010 #18 Share Posted July 7, 2010 Putterdude, I thought it was very nice that you started this thread. I imagine it will be very different once you no longer see the Mercury. We will be sailing the Panama trip on Oct. 1. I am starting to think I am a closer. We sailed the Galaxy not long before it was sold and now the Mercury. I am really looking forward to the cruise. Century class ships seem just right to me.

Hi Putterdude - Not knowing the history of Mercury, this thread made me feel lucky. We will be on our very first cruise leaving Vancouver on July 25th onboard Mercury to Alaska. As I understand it, this will be the last few Mercury trips to Alaska. Also, we are on the Sky Deck where the Navigator lounge is and we will take full advantage of it and bring back stories and pictures to you die hard Mercury fans. I am really excited. ~suraps

Atlanteans Posted July 12, 2010 #24 Share Posted July 12, 2010 Ahoy, Putterdude, Thanks for starting this thread. I remember you from last year's posts regarding when the Mercury was sailing past. Highly entertaining, one way and the other. We are opposite you, in Parksville, BC, and we watch her steaming north on Sunday evenings. We are booked on the Sept. 5 sailing to AK, and sailed on her last Aug. with our adult children. The Mercury is definitely a "class act," and it is too bad that some of the other Celebrity ships are not as friendly crew-wise nor as ship-shape as she. I am glad to hear that the crew are all going on to other jobs within the Celebrity fleet. They are excellent in all respects. Later this evening we will be on Columbia Beach watching for her. Will try to take some pictures of the ship when we are on the AK cruise in Sept.
c-legs Posted July 12, 2010 #25 Share Posted July 12, 2010 Hi, Putterdude and all She pushed off at 16;44hr today...quite early. Looking grand as usual. Hope all of you either side of the Strait had a good sighting. I just wish her Captain would stop referring to her next port of call as Icy Point.... I've noticed that, every Sunday during his welcome speech after Muster drill.... Cheers
