sailingfriends Posted June 8, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 8, 2004 posted 06-07-04 05:30 PM Has anyone had experience with dealing with Delta Airlines and claiming reimbursments. Our luggage was not delivered to the ship until our 3 and 7 day of our 12 day cruise. Two pieces were received on the 3rd day and the final piece was not delivered until day 12. The hassle I am already having is not sitting well. Delta says it will take up to 12 weeks for them to decide if they will reimburse any of my expenses. Then the travel insurance company says it will do nothing until Delta makes it decision. I followed all the required filings with Delta in Barcelona and again on the Brilliance of the Seas. They have all the documentation, and we purchased very little and made due with RCCL doing our laundry for us for 7 days. It was a large inconvience for us, and now we are still the ones who are paying for their mess up. Has anyone else had better luck and what did you do, any hints? Guest NBestafka Posted June 8, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 8, 2004 We "dealt" with Delta over lost luggage for a cruise. For us, it wasn't worth the trouble of continuing to deal with them. We just dropped the issue. (I pick and choose my battles) The cruiseline took care of us so we really weren't out much money, just stressful!!! I hope you have better luck. We learned that it is not always wise to fly the day you sail!!!! Our last cruise we just drove to the port instead of flying. Good luck Nancy
pcur Posted June 8, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 8, 2004 Hmmmmm.....methinks Delta is in the habit of dragging these things out to make the complaintant go away!! Suck in a giant deep breath of patience, BE NICE TO THEM, and keep going. The being nice part is to keep them working on it for you. I once had a computer that wouldn't get fixed. I just kept calling, taking notes, being nice. After 4 months (had a spare computer, by the way) I walked into the store with all my notes and my smile, and the manager said "which computer would you like?". I had them by the....um....well....cajones....so to speak. DH would have committed mayhem months before. Keep up the good fight! Diane&4girls Posted June 8, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 8, 2004 Pcur, This is a litte OT, but... We dropped off a flute for a tune up back in May and it's now lost". It was a $800 flute I bought for my daughter for Christmas. The repair shop can't find it but promised to replace it... I'm on my way to the repair shop now! sailingfriends Posted June 8, 2004 Author #10 Share Posted June 8, 2004 Your guys are great, I really enjoyed that laughing. There were 7 couples on our same flight that we going on the same cruise that did not get luggage. I was not sure if it was Delta or the Atlanta airport. Guess it could be a combination of poor management. I have to agree I like to pick my battles, but right now I'm still battling. You know they hope you just drop it. You said the cruise line compensated you, was this in the form of credit for another cruise. They said they would not take any responsibility for the cost we incurred, since it was not their fault. Which I still can't agree with, they booked the flight that close together. And I looked at the tags on the last suitcase and I still think the 3rd piece did arrive in Pisa the same time as the other 2, but just was not claimed by the cruise line staff. Again, hard to prove. Thanks for the encouragment. I THINK!!! Gerry Brilliance of the Seas 5-14-2004

Guest NBestafka Posted June 8, 2004 #12 Share Posted June 8, 2004 Peggy, I love your spirit. Too bad I didn't have you to fight for me with Delta when my paitience had worn thin!!!! I agree... they want you to forget about it. I guess if I had been out more $$$ I would have kept up the good fight. To compensate, the cruiseline gave DH a tux and shoes for the cruise. They gave me a long gown and shoes to match for the cruise. Also got sneakers. Drinks that first day. $200 credit on the room. Oh, and they did the laundry free. All in all it was ok, just a pain in the butt. I learned a valuable lesson about how to pack (ie: do not pack his and hers suitcases, mix it up). It sucked when MY bag was lost along with the garment bag that also had ALL of my shoes in it!!!!! The cruiseline helped us out (I think) because there was more than one couple that had this problem and THEY booked the air as part of the cruise package. Good luck. Just keep up the good fight and take notes like Peggy said. To those flying the same day as cruising... pack shorts/swimsuit/comfy shoes etc in your carry-on!!!!! And divide his/hers stuff between all the bags!!!!!!! Enjoy!!!! Nancy

sailingfriends Posted June 9, 2004 Author #15 Share Posted June 9, 2004 Nancy, RCCL gave my husband the tux rental and we got free laundry, but nothing for me, and no credits. When our 2 bags came on day three they said there were still 80 bags lost. Sounds like a lot of bags. Some of the couples did not even get the free laundry, so we felt lucky.I lucked out that the hanging bag with my formal dresses came on the third day, which was also the first formal night. However, I had no nylons or a slip, but I wore my dress and we went to dinner. I had extra cloths set out for the carry on, but it came down to my husbands tennis shoes or the outfit. Since he is diabetic and bad feet, I chose the shoes, and I'm glad I did. The rest of the shoes where in the lost luggage. Well, it could have been worse, and we survived, now time will tell if we get reimbursed. Gerry Brilliance of the Seas 5-14-2004
Guest NBestafka Posted June 9, 2004 #16 Share Posted June 9, 2004 Gerry, my opinion is that they really should have done more for you!!!!! Keep up the good fight!!!!!! My incident was a few years ago (2001). Customer service is going downhill I guess. Our incident was really Delta's fault (overbooking the flights and bailing out luggage to accomodate weight restrictions)... but the cruiseline took responsibility for it. Too bad that they are all learning to "pass the buck" these days. Good luck and let us know how it all comes out!!!!!!! Nancy

momofmeg Posted June 9, 2004 #18 Share Posted June 9, 2004 Sorry to hear about your problem. It seems to me though if the cruiseline booked the flights for you they should AT LEAST be partially responsible. It is a common practice for ALL airlines to overbook especially early morning flights which about on an average of 15% don't show. They do this to keep costs down so they can stay in business. Delta has since Sept. 11, 2001 cut back their flight 25%. Before then it was common for planes almost empty to fly out which was great for employees because they could fly standby. Now standby is not so easy for us employees but I am not complaining. I would much rather hae the income then the perks of flying standby. jezzdogg Posted June 9, 2004 #19 Share Posted June 9, 2004 We flew them to San Juan for a cuised 3years ago(also cruiseline purchased tickets) I never have had such a rude rude person than the lost/found luggage desk in Atlanta. When my luggage did not come all the convery belt, we went to the desk and were told to use the phone and call the Alanta center, this guy would not even put a tracer out on it, basiclly told me you are going on a cuise, where what you have, even the people from Delat in San Juan could not believe what he was telling me, would not get me a supervisor--just a really rude person( that is the last time we flew delta) They finally found my luggage-- it came on a different flight -had the right tags, just whoever was sorting in Atlanta( was coming from New York with a layover in Atlanta) pick it on the wrong plane. Thanks to th people on Celebrity, they kept on watching every flight that day to see if it would show up. norm
Guest NBestafka Posted June 9, 2004 #20 Share Posted June 9, 2004 momofmeg: I didn't realize it was common practice to overbook flights. Makes sense, I guess, since I work in healthcare and see physicians do it all the time too. I don't agree with the practice of overbooking though... not at all... it ends up making people really unhappy! It's too bad that business's feel they need to do this to profit. The only other thing I can say about overbooking is that it was really sad to sit on the runway at the airport in Portland, Maine and wave goodbye to my luggage!!!!! I've also flown Delta other times without problems (also to their defense)... but chose to fly out of Logan in Boston and take a direct flight instead of flying out of a smaller airport with tons of connections. Either way, a cruise without luggage deserves some compensation... even if it is just to make the customer happy and come back... to both the cruiseline AND the airline!!!!!! momofmeg Posted June 9, 2004 #21 Share Posted June 9, 2004 You are right-they should have offered something. A friend of ours (not a Delta employee) luggage was lost on a business trip. They compensated him with $500 so he could buy a sport coat, tie, pants and underwear. He felt he was treated really fairly though ofcousre he still wanted his luggage. I don't know why they did not do this for the cruiseship passengers. Driftwoodgal Posted June 9, 2004 #22 Share Posted June 9, 2004 We flew on Delta to visit my brother in Florida. Thank goodness we weren't going for a cruise the day of our flight. The plane that we were suppose to leave on in the morning was grounded because of mechanical problems. The next one out the same thing. Finally the third flight out to Atlanta must have been full enough for them.... which it was because some didn't make it on they got us to Atlanta. We then had to wait on a flight to Fort Myers getting in about 5 hours later than we were supposed to. We now fly Southwest to Tampa or Fort Lauderdale and rent a car and drive to Fort Myers. Even doing all of that we beat Delta on the time it took them to get us there in the air. I understand that they don't want to fly empty planes, but they could call you and advise you that you are being rescheduled to a later flight. Oh.. and this is the kicker... they lost our golf clubs for almost three of the five days we were to be there. It is pretty hard to play golf without your clubs. God bless you and yours. sailingfriends Posted June 10, 2004 Author #23 Share Posted June 10, 2004 Well, I sent off a 3 page, single space, typed letter to Royal Caribbean, dealing with the luggage issue to start and on to other issues on the cruise. We will see if we hear anything. I guess what urks me most about Delta is the 12 weeks, that is unreal.Yes, I do agree that RCCL needs to take some responsibility in this, because they did book the air, and when you have them book the air you know your paying a premium. Some of the other problems we had on RCCL was our room was over a sports bar, the bar did not show on the ship diagram in their book. Well they had a band playing every night, and it was in a alcove directly under our cabin, we had a vibrating bed and did not even have to put in a quarter. I called the guest relations every night asking for them to turn down the bass on the keyboard. After 7 night I had had it, every time I called they sent security to our room, that was not solving anything. So I went to the desk and asked to talk to an officer in charge, explained we had been dealing with this every night and it really had gotten old. We the office told me 'if you would shut up I will take care of this other problem and then I will look into yours". Yes that is good customer relations to tell someone to shut up. I'm Irish, and that did not sit well, and he got my Irish up, so I went to the bar myself. I was going to talk to the group myself, and maybe even pull the plug out of the wall. My friend was already there, and he looked at me and said 'now what do you want'. The next day they moved us to another cabin and we got a very nice bottle of wine at dinner complements of the hotel and guest relations staff. I think the gentlemen behind the desk reported the officer. then they called us everyday to see if everything was going well. Despite all of this it was a awesome itenerary and we really enjoyed ourselves off the ship. I'm going to keep fighting, and let see where it takes us. I will keep you all informed. CHARGE!!!!!! momofmeg Posted June 10, 2004 #24 Share Posted June 10, 2004 I am just wondering if anyone else has had problems with overbooking and luggage being lost on other airlines. One thing they all do if a flight is overbooked-they offer free plane tickets to people if they will voluntarily be bumped. Ofcourse if you are cruising that day that won't work. senior lady Posted June 10, 2004 #25 Share Posted June 10, 2004 A few yrs ago we cruised NCL out of Ft Lauderdale from Seattle They lost on of our suitcases and we didn't get it until day 3 The cruise line was great, they let us borrow stuff from the rental shop, and did our laundry everyday for free. We flew with American, and when we presented them with the bills for new clothes and stuff at the airport, they gave us a check for $500 right away. I guess we were one of the lucky ones. But I have learned to not put everything into one suitcase. Carry a change of clothes in your carry on, and put complete coordinated outfits in different suitcases. That way if one gets lost, hopefully you can make do with the stuff in the luggage you got!!!! Same with formal wear, pack a different outfit in each suitcase
