Can you be forced to upgrade?

We are planning to go on the Freedom in the spring, 2011. I know this is weird, but we do not want a balcony. We are traveling with our 7 year old twins and this will be their first cruise. I was wondering if we booked an ocean view room is they can upgrade us without our concent? Is there a certain way we should book (early saver or call a pvp)? Any help would be great.

Thanks :o

If you select a specific cabin, it's very rare for you to be switched without your concent. To be doubly sure, be sure that your account is annotated that you do NOT want to be considered for upgrades. You could do this either through a PVP or TA. If you book on-line, you could call the 800 number and talk to any of the CVS's to do it.

Personally, I always use a PVP. I still have yet to see the advantage of booking under ES. Our past 2 cruises we have booked past guest just for the peace of mind that if something should need changed, we can do so without penality or fee until the final payment is made. We have been able to take advantage of price decreases just by checking in with our PVP one a month via email. Our last cruise, we saved signifanctly by switching at the last minute to the military rate!!

You can also have the PVP note that you do not want upgraded to a balcony without consent :)

Just FYI- if your concern is safety, the railings on the balconies are high enough that your twins would be safe :)

We are booked on the Frredom for summer 2011. Super Excited!!

No they won't just switch your room! We were leary about Balcony rooms as well because of our son. Not like he's be standing on the railings on the balcony or anything but you just never know ☺

We used E.S rate this time.

I check Daily and the past guest rate has consistently been $80-$130 per person more expensive then we paid with the E.S. rate. We have good travel insurance for the "emergency" things that might force us to Cancel. but we generally cruise at the same time each year and have never had any issues!

So for us the E.S rate worked out well for us.

It's one thing to be upgraded by category (i.e. 8A to 8E) but not class (oceanview to balcony). That's pretty rare. Go ahead and book and ask for "no upgrades" to be placed in your booking. That should take care of any issues.

I see the advantage of booking ES for the close to $2,000 in OBC in the past 3 years....of course if your plans are subject to last minute change it may not be right for you.

Just an FYI regarding the balcony. One would really have to try very hard to fall off of it. You would have to stand on chairs and such to climb over, and even then still probably have to have a running start. Also, many grown adults have a really hard time getting the door open, it's so heavy, that your seven year olds would have MUCH difficulty if not an impossible time getting outside without you noticeing something was going on.

Can you tell me the difference between a PVP and CVS? I usually just call Carnival 800 line to book my travel and talk to whoever answers but if I should be asking to be connected somewhere else, I'd like to know. Like when they answer the main line, do I say I want to be assigned a PVP or what?

To the OP, they rarely upgrade you if you book a cabin. They could try to call you to upsell you to a balcony but usually they don't automatically do it. If you have a quad cabin and only 3 people in it, they could try to move your cabin to a 3 person cabin but usually in the same category. inside to inside, ov to ov, balcony to balcony just a different deck or location. A notation on your reservation should seal the deal.

A PVP (Personal Vacation Planner) is assigned to accounts. A CVS (Carnival Vacation Specialist) is one of those who answer the 800 number and takes whoever calls them. So, if you have someone specific assigned to you and you have an extension for them, that would be a PVP.

Personally, I book on-line and use the CVS if I have a specific question.

If you want a PVP, you could probably have one assigned. If you are happy just using the CVS, then keep doing so.

I would like a PVP cuz each time I have called Carnival, I seem to know more than the guy that answers. In fact, when I booked my October cruise a year ago, I called from my cell phone when I was out of town. I didn't have any info with me so I was just telling him what I saw online, deck plan from memory etc and he made a comment that I knew my stuff...in fact I could do his job LOL I would like to be assigned a PVP with a more personal touch.

If the sailing is pretty full, you won't have a shot at that kind of upgrade. I've had it happen before, but it's been on sailings where there were lots of cabins available. When I worked for Carnival's embarkation staff in Tampa, I did have a family who was upgraded to the Penthouse suite, and refused it! They wanted their original cabin, even though it was an OceanView room and they had 5 family members in the one cabin. Carnival had already assigned that cabin to someone else, and had to move them at the last minute. Maybe they're the ones who got the Penthouse!?

The cruise contract allows Carnival to change your cabin assignment if they need to. Annotating your booking has no affect on this fact.

If you are in a standard room then there is really nothing to worry about. If you are in a HC access room you may be moved (usually as an upgrade) without your consent.

There has been at least 1 incident reported here of a couple being "upgraded" out of their corner wrap around without consent. there was a lot of suspicion it was for a Carnival VIP.
