A field report from Caribbean Princess

We're having a great time on the final Canada/New England cruise for this year. The weather has been perfect but it is getting noticeably colder as we head north.

Just a couple of comments:

Crowding - probably worst in the buffet, but no problems anywhere else. The casino has been unusually busy and Princess is now alternating smoke-free nights with the regular nights. I think it was busier on the smoke-free night.

Traveler checks - no limit on traveler checks. They can only be cashed at guest services though. The casino cage won't cash them any more.

Food - pretty darned good. Last night's rendition of Eggplant Parmesan was the best ever.

Overall - love the changes to ship. The layout makes much more sense and seems to give a bit more room. Vines is great...which I need to get to since we're doing a Stammtish wine tasting in a few minutes.

Great cruise so far, lots of fun people on board, and the ports have been enjoyable.

Spongerob: Exotique should still be onboard. Please tell them that their "Motown fans" say "Hello".

And, if you have traditional dining, give a shout out to Roshan and Dinesh who were DH and my superb waitstaff (table #63 - late seating) on the 9/25 sailing.

Bon Voyage!

Chris

That is one of my gotta have dishes besides the escargot. It is really a let down when it isn't up to par, so hopefully the chef that prepares it doesn't get off with you. We will be on this Sat.:)

Our local media in Saint John NB is reporting the CB is suffering from a flu outbreak and passengers with symptoms should stay onboard. Local vendors are being asked to have sanitary wipes handy and use flu season precautions. Are you aware of any illness onboard? I hope it is not inferring with your trip. We are experiencing an unseasonally warm day today and the sun is brilliant on the Bay of Fundy. Hope you are enjoying it!

A cruise ship carrying dozens of passengers, who have been quarantined after contracting a stomach flu, arrived in Saint John Wednesday.

Roughly 40 passengers and three crew members aboard the Caribbean Princess have been plagued by an outbreak of the stomach flu.

The sick have been barred from leaving the cruise ship while it is in port in Saint John because the virus is easily spread.

John McCann, the Saint John port manager, said it only takes three percent of a ship's passengers getting sick to trigger a notice to Health Canada.

"They have some rudimentary lab facilities. So once they get an indication there could be a virus going around they take immediate steps to isolate it," McCann said.

The Caribbean Princess has about 3,100 passengers onboard.

Port officials say outbreaks like these happen on average once a year, usually later in the season when higher numbers of seniors are traveling.

The port officials plan to fully disinfect the terminal after the cruise ship leaves port Wednesday night.

Saint John businesses that serve large volumes of the cruise ship passengers were advised to take precautions.

Jenn Jewett, who serves coffee at Java Moose, said it was business as usual for her despite the warnings of the flu outbreak.

"We just have hand sanitizer that we're using just to keep the germs away," Jewett said.

SAINT JOHN, N.B. - At least 49 passengers aboard a cruise ship docked in New Brunswick have been told they can't go ashore after they showed flu-like symptoms.

The passengers are among more than 3,000 people travelling on the Caribbean Princess, which is docked in Saint John.

Harbour master John McCann says Health Canada and public health officials are monitoring the situation.

Not all of the passengers on board the ship can be screened for the gastrointestinal ailment.

Tourism operators in the city have been told to take precautions to avoid illness.

SAINT JOHN, N.B. — A handful of people with a flu-like virus will stay on board when their cruise ship docks in Saint John today.

Tourism operator Beth Kelly Hatt, owner of Aquila Tours, says she was informed of the small outbreak as a regular precaution.

She says they have to have risk-management things in place whenever something like this happens, especially on a ship where illness can easily spread.

The ship, the Caribbean Princess, is carrying more than 3,000 passengers.

Hatt says Health Canada is involved and if about 15 per cent of passengers are sick, they won't be allowed to tie up.

The Caribbean Princess is scheduled to visit Halifax Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There is no word on the status of the sick passengers or whether they will be allowed to leave the ship.

The cruise schedule listed on the Port of Halifax web site shows the vessel has made regular, almost weekly stops in Halifax since Aug. 12.

The people of St. John were obviously very concerned about our plague ship arriving in their town. The local radio station announced that it was "probably okay" to talk to people off the ship if they showed no signs of ill health. :)

We have taken to calling ourselves the Floating Leper Colony.

I'll be sure to say hello to Exotique, Chris.

We are a bit late getting into Halifax due to head winds overnight but fortunately the tours will not be affected.

For those of you boarding in New York on Saturday, we'll be looking for you as we continue our journey to warmer places than we have visited.
