Only One Smoking Area!

Azamara has announced elimination of it's indoor smoking area.:D

They now only have one outdoor area for smokers.

Will Oceania hopefully follow???

We just returned from an Oceania cruise and discovered that we often could not stay in the Horizon Lounge because the smoke drifted over from the smoking area. In fact at Afternoon Tea there was often a scramble to get those few tables as far from the smoking area as possible. Unless Oceania installs a special ventilation system, it will always be that way.

Yes, extra ventilation would be nice. I was annoyed by the smoke that wafted into the gym from the outside smoking area. When the wind was right, every time the door opened to the outside smoke would blow in. I bet a double door with ventilation would fix that problem.

According to one of the Azamara staff officers, they had received a great deal of passenger feedback about wanting indoor smoking to be eliminated. How nice that they have chosen to act on it. Azamara seems to be tweaking their product based on customer input. Sounds like a good way to grow a business.

We've been very dissatisfied with the situation in O's Horizons. Smoke pervades the area and for us at least RUINS the lovely ambiance in that fabulous lounge and viewing venue. Also, we've noted that the smoke from the outside smoking area on the pool deck forward starboard wafts down the stairwell and also into the gym.

Fingers crossed that a change might take place on O.

Horizons has been spoilt on many occasions by one or two smokers, and please, before we get the treehuggers on about "smokers have rights too", in Australia you become very attuned to sensing cigarette smoke from a long way away.

No smoking anywhere that food is served or prepared. No smoking in bars, or within 4 metres of a public use doorway. No smoking in cars with children under 16 years of age. No smoking within sporting or entertainment venues. Some may call these measures draconian, but, the difference between the stale smelling bars and restaurants of years gone by and what we experience now has been worth the hassles experienced when these laws were put in place.

People now accept that smoking is not welcomed in crowded situations, because the majority of people are now non-smokers. This will of course start the debate once again, but, please ask why governments all over the world are now introducing no smoking laws.

Umtali,

I might be labeled as a "tree-hugger" because I am reasonably pro-environment (meaning that I'm a moderate about it all), but I don't think smokers have rights when it comes to polluting my lungs. :)

I wish there was no smoking at all on Oceania. Is smoking allowed in the casino? I can't remember, mostly because I think I went in there only once to play the slots.

NO smoking anywhere on the ships except for an area on the pool deck and in Horizons but for folks like us that's more than enough to avoid. We do manage never to go to either place while on board.:)

DH and I are big disco dancers and would love to go to Horizons when it becomes a dance club at night, but we can't because of the smoking there. The DJ's are always asking for people to come in and dance but don't seem to get why no one does.

Come on O , get with the program, eliminate smoking in Horizons.

Mr. DelRio often comments on subjects in these threads. I would just love to see what he has to say about this. I know that on "R" smoking was banned altogether, it was a program that was before its time, but, IMHO the time has arrived to at least prohibit smoking in ALL inside venues.

They must have a lot of smokers in that little corner in order for it to reach the dance floor

The only time we had a problem was during afternoon tea . We could not get a table on the other side so had to sit close to the smoking section.

too bad they could not enclose the section like they did here in some coffee shops

I am thankful that there will be only two areas that I will have to avoid while aboard the Nautica in May. I am quite allergic to cigarette smoke so was hoping that very few people would actually be smoking on board. Here at home smoking has been banned for several years and even at the university where I teach, it is getting harder and harder for the smokers to find a spot that they are allowed to smoke in. It is a treat for me because I no longer have to banned smokers to the back of the classroom because the smoke odor from their clothes irritated my allergies.

I agree, especially with the brand new Marina. It will be a shame for her to get all 'stinky' anywhere! :(

Last May on Regatta, we went to afternoon tea for the first time on our three cruises (because it was raining and because I had heard several on board rave about the truly excellent scones with jam and clotted cream).

Due to the weather (I assume) the only tables left were in the smoking section in the rear left side of Horizons, and they were all (I believe there are four or five of them) empty. We removed the ashtrays from one table and sat down, and then three other parties followed our lead, sat down at the tables around us and did the same. So for least for one afternoon tea, all of Horizons was no smoking! :)
