thied Posted January 13, 2011 Author #88 Share Posted January 13, 2011 Brisbane floods: Tugboat pilot hailed a hero Australians salute Doug Hislop after he stopped a massive slab of concrete from colliding with the Gateway Bridge A massive slab of concrete walkway threatened all in its path as it tore down the Brisbane River, in the flooded Australian state of Queensland yesterday but any disasters were averted by a quick-thinking tugboat crew. What had once been a popular spot for walkers and cyclists along the banks of the river turned into a giant torpedo, 6 metres wide (20ft) and 150m long. For nearly 16km (10 miles) the slab, which had been torn off its foundations by the sheer force of the floodwaters, sped down the river unassisted. It was heading for one of the city's major bridges, the Gateway, which spans 260m over the river. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jan/13/brisbane-floods-tugboat-hero-bridge
thied Posted January 13, 2011 Author #89 Share Posted January 13, 2011 Australian Floods Rage Through Brisbane Thousands of people have sought refuge with friends and family. Thousands more fled to dozens of evacuation centers. Volunteers at one of the largest centers set up a supervised play area in the corner to help distract children as their parents sat glued to news reports. “There have been a range of reactions, from confusion, people being distressed, people being teary, people being reasonably together with it,” said Kate Brady, the Red Cross coordinator at one of the largest centers. For many others, “It won’t really set in until they get back to their property and look at what’s going on, and face up to what they’ve got coming as far as recovery goes,” she said. Essan al-Quraishi, an Iraqi agronomist who moved his family to Brisbane four months ago, was able to grab some clothes and vital documents before the waters flooded his first-floor apartment. “The most important thing is my family. I can start again,” he said as his 7-year-old son played with a jigsaw puzzle nearby. “We managed to survive in Iraq, so we can manage to survive here.” There have been isolated reports of looting across the city, but police said the atmosphere around Brisbane had been mostly orderly. With the floodwaters still swirling in many neighborhoods, some residents have ignored official warnings to stay away and used kayaks and motorboats to rescue their belongings. Police said a 24-year-old man became Brisbane’s first flood casualty when he was swept into a storm drain while trying to check on his father’s property. full story at http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/14/world/asia/14australia.html ......... thied Posted January 13, 2011 Author #91 Share Posted January 13, 2011 The flood levels may be dropping in Ipswich and Brisbane, but Goondiwindi is bracing for record levels of 10.85 metres, warned Anna Bligh. It could even be higher, with levee banks only reaching 11 metres. A reading of the river at 4pm will determine whether decisions need to be made about hospital and aged care facilities, as well as other evacuations. A number of reservoirs in the Lockyer Valley are now running very low on drinking water. Thirteen water trucks will now be making runs of water, 24 hours a day, to top up those water reserves until infrastructure, until repairs can be made to water treatment facilities. http://www.crikey.com.au/2011/01/13/not-as-bad-as-feared-but-still-dire-qld-floods/
thied Posted January 13, 2011 Author #92 Share Posted January 13, 2011 Bureau warns water could break Goondiwindi levee Updated 13 minutes ago Record flood levels flowing towards Goondiwindi in Queensland could overwhelm the border town's levee when it peaks at dawn on Friday. The current record level is 10.6 metres and the forecast peak of 10.85m puts the Macintyre River within 15 centimetres of the town's 11m levee. But the weather bureau now says it could go higher and residents have begun evacuating low-lying areas. full story at http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/01/13/3112552.htm?section=justin
