Skywalkers .. What Went Wrong

The unattractiveness might have been a problem in the past. However, Princess has solved that problem by paying NCL to park the EPIC next to their ship - by comparison to that monstrosity no one will be looking at the Skywalkers!

HAHAHAHA im dieing laughing here at work! You made my day now the EPIC thats a ship only its mother could love! We were parked next to it leaving miami & wow I would be afraid of that on a windy day or transatlanic sailing  But anyhow it sucks skywalkers on the Grand Princess didnt workout!

The OP hit the nail squarely on the head concerning why Skywalker's empties as soon as the DJ starts playing at 10PM. It is ludicrous to hear the CD's publicly lament that they don't understand why no one is using Skywalker's later in the evening.

If they'll play some music we can dance to (jitterbug/triple step, rhumba, waltz, foxtrot) we'll stay there, enjoy ourselves, and buy drinks. If the DJ starts playing stuff that we don't enjoy and can't dance to, we're going to leave within five minutes. We shouldn't have to ask for music we like. They're adults and should be able to figure it out for themselves.

I'm curious as well!!

You can add me to the list of curious as well. I am really hoping that it will have some of the same viewing opportunities that Skywalkers had.

I think to new look of the Grand is great.

I was very disappointed to see them remove Skywalker's. I firmly fall into the camp that the "spoiler design" of Skywalker's added to the ship. It makes those ships easy to pick out as Princess! But, the space was woefully empty most of the time... and I too attributed this lack of use to bad DJ's and bad placement. The idea of having a space suspended like that was a good one but it shouldn't have been a nightclub. They could have some up with a better use.... maybe the coffee bar idea would have worked. Also, I always thought they should have moved the walls in a few feet and made balcony space on the outside.

The 2 biggest things that hurt skywalkers

1. Location. Half the time I had trouble finding the place sober, never mind drunk. when I did find it I found that the drunker I got the sicker I felt thanks to the pronounced rocking at the top of the ship. Also found it annoying that casino was so far away.

2. Average age of princess cruisers. With all due respect to those 60 year olds that still boogie down to jay-Z, the majority of older cruisers will not.

I did hear some folks mention playing swing music or something, but that means skywalkers would no longer be a traditional night club ... Certainly not what princess is aiming for. Most clubs on cruise ships the sole purpose is to give party animals a place to drink until 3 am .... There just aren't that many of these types of party animals on princess cruises. That combined with a crappy location means few people find it, and those that do leave quickly due to a dead scene.

On the Star, Skywalkers was an interesting yet scary venue. The aft portion of the ship shook a lot. While on the Star, we went to Skywalkers and it was shaking so much we had to leave. I guess it depends on the sea. I enjoyed Skywalkers on the Crown. It felt more stable. It is hit or miss as far as the crowd goes. On one of our Crown cruises, there were very few people there, on another it was packed every night. I can't wait to go again! :)

I'm glad it's gone as it was an eyesore and you couldn't see around the pillars esp when on the aft end around the pool. Nothing is better than watching the trailing end of your ship as you are cruising and getting a great view of the whole back end....not having two goal posts is such a nice change.

My only hope is that it doesn't look like Club Fusion. I absolutely hate the layout of that lounge.

I just experienced my first Club Fusion and I totally agree - it's a questionable use of space. I guess you're supposed to watch the video screens if you can't see what's going on but the production team can't seem to get what's going on where it should be on the screen...so what's the use??

Back to Grand Princess - does anyone know what her official GRT is now that Skywalkers is removed?

we've spent very little time in Skywalkers and have never been on this particular ship. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

This is our experience as well. The only times we would go there was part of exploring the ship or when they had special cocktails and canapes for the Platinum/Elite passengers. I'm sure the space was used but there might be a problem justifying the cost to operate with staffing and weight to fuel expense.

If it weren't for the fact that they were drydocking for other reasons they might not have done the removal of Skywalkers as the only project. Since the ship was out of action for those weeks it made sense to do it.

We embarked the Sapphire Princess on April 23rd and had the pleasure of speaking to Captain Nash at our Meet and Greet. He was asked about the removal of Skywalker's on the Grand Princess.

Captain Nash' answer: Seems when the Grand was being built with the addition of Skywalker's, it was discovered to be top-heavy. Apparently, none of the other ship's with Skywalker's is top-heavy. It was decided to remove Skywalker's at some point... this recent dry dock was that point. All the other ships with Skywalker's, will remain as is. No other removal of Skywalker's will take place.

In the drydock information, I read that they were adding one

ton of marble in the atrium and needed to remove Skywalkers

to compensate for that additional weight. Also, the removal of

Skywalkers balanced the weight toward the center of the

ship which made cruising through the water easier and it

would save fuel. The other additions look great.
