Parliament set aside its usual business and today adjourned until March 8 after expressing its sympathy and condolences to those who have lost loved ones in the Christchurch earthquake.

Christchurch quake: 15 CTV staff believed to have died

Fifteen Canterbury TV (CTV) staff are believed to have died when their central Christchurch building collapsed after yesterday's magnitude 6.3 quake, CTV chairman Nick Smith says.

Police were "100 per cent sure" there were no survivors in the earthquake-damaged CTV building, today calling off the search for bodies there, shifting their efforts to sites where it was believed people were trapped alive.

More than 80 people were believed to be in still in the building, which housed the regional television station, a nursing school and a language school.

CTV chairman Nick Smith told NZPA the television channel had 24-25 fulltime staff.

"We're working on the assumption that everyone we haven't managed to contact was in the building, and that would number probably 15," he said.

"We haven't had anything confirmed, we haven't been given any names, we're just going off our own tally."

Mr Smith, business manager and director of Allied Press of Dunedin, which owns the Otago Daily Times, said he had travelled to Christchurch today to support staff.

"We're just having a staff get-together with those who have survived. That's the most important thing at the moment," he said.

"(They've) lost a lot of friends, a lot of colleagues, a lot of talent and a lot of life-long relationships...

"They're not happy. It's very sorrowful."

yes not the best timeing as we did plan this awhile ago, we are to stay with friends but we are just waiting to see how is all pans out. the trip is all insured any way. and some how think that they do not people on hols there. and we can go another time if not this time.

I can't believe you actually posted that you are still considering going and "see how it pans out" I'm going to say what everyone else is thinking. As if CHCH needs you there! There's no water, no phones, no sewerage.......they are broadcasting only essential travel. I can't see how that will change in under a week. I don't think anyone on CC gives a flying fig that it's not the best timing for YOU! Gimme a break!

Blunt but you're right, it's not much of a holiday if you're digging a hole in the ground to go to the bathroom and can't shower. Think about taking your friends to Queenstown or the Golden Bay or somewhere else that's lovely at this time of year.

Yeah, blunt maybe......but perhaps I think outside the square. There are going to be so many people wanting to get over there from here......family and close friends of the injured and dead and others who houses are trashed........to be there, to help, to grieve......and let's not forget the area is volatile, at least 100 aftershocks between 4 and 6.....people who have no business being there get caught up in another big quake, and already drained resources are searching for them.....................yeah I don't see how anyone who doesn't have an essential reason to fly into Chistchurch should be there. There are other essential services being mobilised and deployed.......trauma counselling services and the like......they will also want seats on commerical aircraft

My opinion, and if I get banned or a 'naughty' email for saying so.....sobeit.

Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard has confirmed that an Australian resident was among those killed in Christchurch's devastating earthquake.

Ms Gillard told a Canberra press conference "a long-term Australian resident of New Zealand origin has lost his life in this disaster".

She said a stranger tried to help the man in the last hours of his life, and thanked him for his efforts.

"Reports are sketchy and we are still working through the details, but it appears this person is a family man and our condolences go to his family," she said.

Christchurch quake: National emergency declared as toll reaches 75

The New Zealand government has declared a national state of emergency following yesterday's 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch that killed at least 75 people.

The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies were still being found and identified till reports last came in, nzherald.co.nz reports.

The devastating earthquake has reportedly destroyed a huge number of buildings, and other infrastructure in the city.

Insisting that the earthquake has brought "death and destruction on a dreadful scale", Prime Minister John Key has said that a national emergency would possibly allow greatest coordination of local, national, and international resources to work on rescue and recovery efforts, the report said.

The earthquake has caused some 30 million tonnes of ice to break off from New Zealand's biggest glacier. Tour guides at the Tasman Glacier in the Southern Alps say the quake caused the ice to "calve" from the glacier, forming icebergs in the terminal lake. Picture: AP

The astonishing impact of the earthquake is seen in this rail line, buckled by the shifting earth, in a photo by AFP's Marty Melville:

Aoraki Mount Cook Alpine Village tourism manager Denis Callesen took this picture, showing parts of a 30 million tonne block of ice that sheared off the Tasman glacier just minutes after the earthquake struck Christchurch:

Christchurch earthquake: 'Today we're thinking it's probably not liveable'

Families are pulling together in the city outskirts, where houses have been flattened and most people are still without power and water

Beyond the carnage of central Christchurch, the city outskirts have been equally hard hit, especially in the hillside areas to the east and south-east. In the seaside suburbs of Sumner and Redcliffs, houses were flattened by huge pieces of debris cleaved from cliffs and whole streets evacuated amid fears of further landslides.

The port town of Lyttelton was reduced to a standstill, with 60% of buildings on the high street collapsing. Around the Port Hills, homes perched on the hillside gave way while fissures and landslips closed roads. Nearly three days on from the earthquake, electricity and water are still unavailable in almost all homes in the area.

Well all is good as it has paned out/ worked out. we do not fly to christchurch as we expected, and all our money has been returned for what we were doing on the sth island , now we fly to Wellington some time next week and meet up with our friends from christchurch hope fully.

so it has paned out good for us, but Christchurch is a mess from what are told and have read.

Christchurch Earthquake: Brownlee talks of seeing home town devastated

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee is preparing for a long stay in his home city of Christchurch.

Mr Brownlee flew back to New Zealand from the Middle East yesterday, after being told of Tuesday's deadly quake.

Along with Prime Minister John Key and Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker, he was flown over the city by helicopter to survey the devastation.

``It's physically upsetting to see the extent of the damage,'' he told NZPA today.

For those of us living in New Zealand this is a national tragedy, even though the effects of this earthquake are centred on the city of Christchurch.

Please be assured the rest of the country remains well and truly open to tourists - in fact the port of Auckland today has three cruise ships berthed. Three more are here Sunday and Queen Mary 2 visits for the day on Monday.

Well said Deb and my sentiments exactly! who gives a flying fig about most of the posts coming out of the "ambulance chaser". You wont get banned for stating the obvious but you know what, you will probably get your post and this reply and others rremoved because we stated the obvious and it probably hurt his feelings. So much for freedom of speech.

I really do think he's so shallow he just loves to look at himself in the mirror and the sound of his own voice!

And then change your tickets to another airport, so that they can met up with their friends!:(

We have family here in Australia that are concerned for their son and family in Christchurch, who have lost their home. These people can't get through to the family. They were only able to text.
