Breaking News: Another earthquake for Christchurch 6.3

Recommended Posts

It is important that people keep coming to NZ-

our economy is facing tough times and after this we really need all the tourists we can get.

I totally agree, people need to support New Zealand, as the recovery is going to take years.

The tourists have stopped coming to Queensland because of our recent floods, even though most places are open for business.

I think I am suffering from disaster overload! Its time to think of some way to help the recovery. The constant focus on the disaster aspect is getting me down and I am sure others as well.

I agree Deb, Stan, Aus Family and Sue. It was said on TV last night that all the over-reporting is keeping overseas visitors away from Australia and the same will happen to NZ. There is no need whatsoever to keep plastering it all over here. If anyone wants to know they only have to look at TV.

For those of us living in New Zealand this is a national tragedy, even though the effects of this earthquake are centred on the city of Christchurch.

Please be assured the rest of the country remains well and truly open to tourists - in fact the port of Auckland today has three cruise ships berthed. Three more are here Sunday and Queen Mary 2 visits for the day on Monday.

Nice story, obviously the news editor has spelling issues too..."mircale" ? Probably a close relative of a miracle!

Kiwis and Aussies are tough they will just roll their sleeves up and get on with life. Like Napier Christchurch will rise from the rubble. Lives lost will not be forgotten but the city and its people will go on.

Telecom Media Advisory: Canterbury earthquake - update 5pm

Friday, 25 February 2011, 10:46 pm

Press Release: Telecom New Zealand

Telecom Media Advisory: Canterbury earthquake - update 5pm, Friday 25 February

Overall the Telecom network is up and working, all Telecom exchanges are operational with a combination of mains and generated power , as are the majority of mobile sites . We recommend people in Christchurch continue to minimise the use of mobile phones, and use text messages instead of calls when possible to free up the network for emergency response workers. However, as the network is now predominantly up and stable people should use their phones for important calls.

Christchurch earthquake: What NZers are doing to help

Air NZ is extending its $50 one-way airfares from/to Christchurch from anywhere in NZ until midnight on Sunday. There will be $50 standby fares in and out of Christchurch for all of next week. It has also confirmed that airfares will be capped at a certain price and that more capacity has been added. To book a standby fare

Telecom is running a campaign to collect analogue landline phones from around the country to distribute to people in Christchurch without power who have only cordless landline phones. Drop spare analogue phones into any Telecom store during retail opening hours.

Lions clubs have already donated more than $50,000 in cash to the Salvation Army and City Mission to help feed displaced people. An internet-based worldwide appeal for money to help earthquake victims has been launched by the international service to its 1.3 million Lions members in 200 countries.

NZ Quake: More than 200 Certain to Have Died

Rescue supervisors in New Zealand's quake-devastated Christchurch city today said that over 200 people are certain to have perished in the calamity as the grim search for the missing continued and residents offered prayers for the dead.

With the recovery of two more bodies, the official death toll went up to 147 and with no signs of life in the debris for the past few days, police said most of missing should now be presumed dead.

Superintendent of Police Dave Cliff said there are still more than 200 people missing, including a New Zealand police officer.

"We know many - if not all - of the confirmed dead will be on that list... So there are still over 50 unaccounted for," he said.

That would give a total of more than 200 dead - "and probably a little higher than that, ultimately," he said.

Christchurch braces for windstorm

EARTHQUAKE-scarred Christchurch is bracing for a violent windstorm as intense aftershocks rocked the city today, creating treacherous conditions for rescuers scouring the rubble.

The battered city also faced a new danger when cracks opened in a cliff overlooking suburban streets, forcing more residents to flee their homes in the wake of last Tuesday's 6.3-magnitude tremor.

The death toll from the disaster reached 148 Monday but police have already said they expect the final tally to exceed 200, with more than 50 still listed as "unaccounted for'' in the rubble of New Zealand's second largest city.

A windstorm was forecast to whip through on Monday afternoon, officials said, meaning rescuers searching for bodies and possible survivors would have to retreat from ruins already on the brink of collapse.

''(It) will of course, if you have gale force winds, impact on structures,

From a reporter who was on the Europa with the Captain. The boat shook and shook the lights and the chandelier fell down. The amased captain said what is this the reporter replied an earthquake. They looked out the window to see the local cathedral falling down and the cliffs collapsing. The epicentre of the earthquake was in the port of Lyttelton. The town was destroyed.

The Queen Mary has cancelled its call to Christchurch

This commentary cannot be taken seriously. It is impossible for someone on a ship (at Lyttelton) to have seen the cathedral falling down - there is al least 10km distance and a range of hills between those two places ... the statement that "the town was destroyed" (does that refer to Chrisctchurch or Lyttelton?) is also a huge over-statement. Sure there has been massive and widespread damage and destruction but ":destroyed" is a step too far.

I think that refers to the little church that overlooks the Port, however, as you so rightly point out, it can be misinterpreted.

As for this thread, I think Host Walt should shut it down NOW!

As Sue previously, posted earlier, we don't need a running commentary on cruise critic. We only need to turn on the television, radio or internet to get updates.

John Key has asked all New Zealanders to fall silent at 12:51pm (10.51am AEDT),

I do think that most of Australia and around the world will be doing this. I know I will.

New Zealand to hold two-minute silence as John Key promises full inquiry

NEW Zealand prepared to observe two-minute's silence for Christchurch earthquake victims today as Prime Minister John Key promised a major inquiry into the disaster.

The official death toll stands at 154 and is expected to rise to more than 200, although latest estimates this morning put this figure as high as 240.

Another one would pop up.

Some people need to get a life.

I heard last night that relatives of mine are now awaiting for officials to go to their house to give it either a red sticker (demolition) or green sticker (can be repaired). Meanwhile they have had to send their children elsewhere in NZ, so as they can attend school and also that their parents can try and sort things out. It is just so heartbreaking.

100,000 homes damaged in NZ quake

NZPA

Up to 100,000 homes need to be repaired after last week's Christchurch earthquake and an estimated 10,000 will have to be rebuilt, Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says.

Residents and business owners would have to be patient as the Earthquake Commission and private insurers swung into action to get assessments under way, Brownlee said.
