All things EARTH...

Recommended Posts

Laurie , That haircut would look great on you !

Mousey , What a deal you got ! I keep hoping for one of those letters .They are for real . I have read of several people who got the deal and it was real .

Enjoy your Son's return !

Sailor Sally,

You were right! It's legit! A total price (including port fees and all taxes) for two people is $226.30 :D That's not each...it's for the both of us and we get $50 each, not per cabin, each...of Onboard credit! This is such an awesome deal that the DH is possibly considering doing the 6-day cruise that's offered in Dec. His attitude is, "Hey...if I'm going to take 4 days off work...I may as well take 6!" Sounds good to me! I'll get back and let everyone know if we're gong to do the 4 or 6 day one. I'm so excited! This would be the first time the DS and I cruise alone in 20 years!!!

Anita, how does Athleta run?

Laurie Athleta tends to run small to me. I normally wear a 12 & I bought a 14 in my skorts & they fit perfectly. Many of their bathing suits are actual bra sized which is perfect for me. The rash guards are supposed to fit closely, I don't like that, so I ordered a 1X (fits great & is a bit longer). I am pretty chesty & I don't like real clingy. I really like the quality of the items. Melody

Anita, how does Athleta run?

I find Athleta to be fairly true to their sizing charts. I often spend time to read through the reviews of the different items to find out where the variance is. Often, the ladies share their normal size...their measurements or bra size...their weight etc...and often there is helpful info in the reviews to help determine which size would be best taking all that into consideration.

Laurie...I think that would be a lovely cut on you. I think the side swept bangs would be attractive. Length is something that would be questionable for me...I THINK that right at the shoulder length would be nice. I like the way my hair moves freely when it's above my shoulders (mine is much shorter, but it has movement). Whatever length is the most flattering for your face with that basic style, I think it would be great.

I say this because the picture you posted for a cut that you liked from the past seems to be much shorter...more jawline length, give or take...not to the shoulders.

It seems like you have an oblong face? It's longer than it is wide? Mine is kind of square (tending to round with extra weight). Anyway...I don't know if the longer length is good to complement that? or if the shorter length is good to de-emphasize that? I'm not the best at figuring that kind of thing out...I do rely on past experience and my lovely hair dresser to guide me in what lengths are the most flattering.

I did succumb to the Athleta sale. I purchased a couple more shirts in the style of that green exercise shirt that I shared before. That was quite a splurge for me and I've been watching for it to go on sale so that I could get more.

The exercise shirts I have have seen better days in the arm pit areas. But I have had them in serious weekly use for over 5 years now...I got my money's worth out of them.

Pretty sure that none of the colors I purchased are Earthy. But at the same time, for exercise clothing, I don't worry too much about it. The shirts I'm replacing aren't Earth either...and for this type of clothing...the fabric and fit and comfort is more important to me than the color.

As to organizing...whatever works is what is important. I know that my kitchen organization has finally hit on something easily sustainable...that is, it's finally easy to keep the kitchen clean...even with all the cooking I have been doing. Our kitchen sink was clogged and while we worked through the issue, I did lose its function for about 15 hours...from dinnertime one night to early afternoon the next day.

It was easy to get the kitchen back on track...but even DH said, Ahhh, nice to have the kitchen back. Which is amazing, as Mom could attest, because I have a history of kitchen issues. Which thankfully, seems to be resolved with this new reorganization and minimal downsizing. Very exciting.

I need to go through my dresser drawers again. I had made a lot of room for Zumba specific clothing...and now, I realize that it's not bringing me joy to see these items in my drawers...and not be able to use them. I'm going to clear them out temporarily and put them in a tub on the closet shelf. Fortunately, I have plenty of space in that closet now, so no big.

And it'll help make room for some other exercise items I've purchased to replace the usage of Zumba specific clothing.

Edited to add: mousey...nice deal on the cruise! Very exciting for you!

Anita,

Thanks, they called me today and they've added other dates...a 7-day Mexican Riviera cruise on the Miracle for $422.10 for the two of us. That's only $211.05 per person + we get an onboard credit of $50 each! And..ta da...they have one that leaves 12/16 and returns to the 26th! That's a Christmas cruise for the DH, DS, and me! So excited that we may do this one! The DS can bring a friend at this price as he got a letter too! Yea! Cabo and Puerto Vallarta are the two ports it stops at + two sea days. Christmas on a cruise...what a novelty!:D By-the-way...I just found out that the reason I didn't get one is because it is a Casino deal. I was like, "Wow! How much did you guys lose at the tables!" LOL! I don't gamble so didn't get a letter of my own.

I loose lots.:D Love those stupid slots. My friend has gambled $20 in 10 years and she is regularly called and offered a free cruise. There is no rhyme or reason why people get free cruises from what I have read in the gambling threads.

Several casino hosts say it's because we don't have a room booked - if we have one - they offer a discount cause they have us - if no booking they want to get us back on board and give a free one.

I experimented last year. I quit booking rooms in advance or we book a bunch a one time. Toward the end of the group of cruises I get free offers again.

My last 10 bookings have been free except for port fees with an obc too. I got a completely free cruise a few summers back. They paid my port fees and taxes. There are different levels of offers out there.

Nice to hear from you, Granny!

Well, we had some plans to go a wedding at a winery this fall. We had the save the date card and everything...today we get the invitation, to the reception, at a local barbecue place. This isn't a complaint or anything, but I don't think I'll get to wear a fancy dress after all. Darn. At least I love that local barbecue place, right??

I'm anxiously awaiting my order from Athleta. I was debating and debating, and realized they were running out of everything I liked quite quickly. I decided I would go ahead and order, and see how it goes!

I ordered that coverup in saffron red. I tend to like red no matter what season it is, but it didn't seem like there was a purple or blue under tint to it.

I really, really need to get to Soma. I think I should get resized rather than relying on my own measurements. I just want to be sure I'm buying the proper size. I ordered from Athleta based on my own measurements, so I hopefully did okay.

Mousey, that sounds like quite a deal! I can't say I ever see much like that with RCI, but if you can sail on short notice, their going, going gone sale is quite good.

I've never sailed during a holiday. I've thought about it a few times, but I'm generally the family host for holiday gatherings, and my husband really likes for us to celebrate at home. Maybe down the road someday. I admit to loving the tree, the fireplace, a glass of wine and "It's a Wonderful Life" where we all pass around the box of Kleenex!

Laurie,

I totally agree with you about the "picture postcard" Christmas. But you know, one of my favorite Christmas's was one where the DH, DS, and I went on a ski trip. The ski resort was beautifully decorated and had an enormous Christmas tree in the lobby. Still, on Christmas Eve day, while the guys were out skiing, I set up a small pre-lit Christmas tree in our hotel room that I brought along in a garbage bag. I decorated it with cheap Dollar Tree ornaments. I had gifts for under the tree, a CD player (A Walkman...I'm old school), and a CD of traditional Christmas songs. It's a tradition in my family...we gotta hear Elvis singing Christmas carols or it isn't Christmas...LOL. Anyway, it was so much fun that we just loved it and without fail, that holiday has been talked about every Christmas since. The DS was young at the time and I just remember it being so intimate and loving. It's what I hope this Christmas cruise will be...if in fact, we decide to book it as we still have to run it by the DS (who will be home in 4 DAYS!) Also, we have no family in CA to share Christmas with. My cousin (the one with the brain tumor) celebrates Hanukkah with her kids and DH. She converted to Judaism when she married her DH. I'll still decorate the house and put up a tree and have a big dinner with lots of our friends...the cruise will be an extra special Christmas treat. And if we do go...Elvis goes with us! LOL. So will the little pre-lit tree!:D

I think the reason I didn't get my own letter is mostly because I guess they figure that as you can take one guest with you...they presume that either the DH or DS would have me as their guest.

4 MORE DAYS!!!!

Mousey, if Carnival is anything like RCI, you will never know why some of you received the offer and some did not. Either way, you are getting a great deal!

I think the biggest thing for me at the holidays is that I really want to relax, enjoy the time, and spend it with those who matter the most. I can't take the boys (dogs) on a cruise! As bad as it sounds, I wouldn't be overly bothered by not having my whole family over. I enjoy the special meal I make for me, my husband and daughters on Christmas eve more than anything else. And after that comes the sappier stuff that I've already mentioned, such as the fireplace and movie. I admit that I often feel a bit rushed through the holidays and I would like to get away from that.

My Athleta order came in! The olive tankini is really nice. I couldn't get my first choice in the top, but I did get the second choice and it's really nice.

The second suit isn't going to work, but this one wasn't available in bra size, and I don't think a different size will necessarily be better. But they do have a one piece in bra sizes that I would like to try!

The coverup is great. It's a bit heavier and warmer than what I'm used to, but it's really cute.

I am very much reminded when I put on a swimsuit that I still have more work to do. I've only lost 3 more pounds since my cruise, but it seems that my muscle tone is steadily improving. I even had a salad during my date lunch today, lol.

I found DH some swim shirts today, love those 30% coupons at Kohls. 4 shirts for $14. They're Hang Ten & SPF50.

Laurie, glad you like the coverup. I have it in Caspian Blue, love it. I also have s bathing suit, the bra sizes work well. I did get the tall as I'm long in the body

We traveled for Christmas one year. Just DH, DS, and myself went to Pagosa Springs, Colorado and stayed in a vacation home there for a week that included Christmas.

We lived in Texas at the time. It was a wonderful break. We had a "White Christmas." It was very relaxing to be relieved of all the trappings of Christmas that year. It was so simplified and felt like we had gotten back to the basics...just celebrating our Christian holiday without all the stressors and expectations.

I wouldn't want to do that every year, but I'm not sorry that we did that! And I wouldn't mind doing it again. I question how I would feel going on a warm weather vacation though? I'm open to it, now that I live in a colder Christmas place again (Houston Christmas was always pretty warm).

I got my Athleta package yesterday too. The red color I got may be Earth. But as I said, I'm thrilled if I can find Earth exercise clothes, but I don't limit myself there at all.

Glad you got something that worked with your order Laurie! I have several Athleta swim suits now...they hold up really well. I think they are well made. The only thing that happened to one of mine is significant fading and discoloring in the Thellassotherapy pool on Celebrity. Now it is my designated suit for that purpose.

I am very excited because I just booked a Spring Break cruise for 2017!!

It's slightly nerve wrecking because I used the school districts guidelines for calendar development to figure out when Spring Break should be that year...and not looking at the officially released calendar. SHOULD work out fine though.

I had a reservation for our February break that I made back with the BOGO50 in May 2014...but I couldn't get good airfare for that cruise. Turns out that the outbound weekend was also President's day weekend. My airfare was almost costing as much as the cruise. Good grief.

So I went looking for another cruise to transfer my deposit to.

So excited to book Freedom OTS!! Haven't been on Freedom class before and we snagged a very special oceanview room! As crazy as this is...this is about the same time frame for booking as the 40th birthday cruise back in March 2012...that is, I used the cruise as a big incentive for some health and fitness goals.

Going to have the same thing going on again.

Timing is always a bit weird when you do something like this...having to turn off the excitement for that cruise in the face of the one that you are actually going on! Which is only 2 months away! Woo hoo! This cruise feels more like a little getaway because it is a 4 nighter. Going to have to hit the ground relaxing! LOL...because there isn't "transition time" to get into vacation mode.

I've been wondering what I could do at home to help with that. Margaret made a comment once about treating home like a port day...I'm hoping that we could be so well organized for leaving that we might be able to do the same and try to hit vacation mode earlier.

Still very excited to check out another new class of ship. I don't have an official bucket list...it's just in my nature to enjoy experiencing all the options. The only class now that I haven't experienced/don't have a reservation for is Brilliance for RCI.

And I'll be 4 points away from the next loyalty level after Enchantment...

Things that make you go Hmmmm.

Hi Ladies,

I have spent more time reading these "colors" posts than I care to admit! You ladies are very inspiring!

I am in the midst of a makeover for myself! I will be turning 50 in February! Age does not bother me in the least; good genes have helped me stay looking younger than my years! But I need to lose my baby fat since my baby is going into her sophomore year of college! I have lost 22.5 already and have another 40-50 to go! It is coming off slowly but I am forming great new habits in the meantime! It is a journey...

With that weight loss I will need a new wardrobe. I am trying to be very smart and want to plan my wardrobe just like I plan for a cruise! I have been reading the Vivienne files a lot and know I do not need closets of clothing, I just have to make good choices. This is very attractive to the minimalist in me!

But I am trying to figure out what season I am. I want to make sure to get this right! I definitely think I am warm since my skin is much yellower than my DH's. We compare palms and his is pink, and mine looks golden! I have dark brown hair and my eyes are hazel, almost brown with orangey, yellow flecks. Because I am darker, I think I am more of an earth. But I am fighting against it! I look at the color cards and I would have never thought to wear rusts, khakis, or gold. In fact when I have tried those colors, I thought I looked awful! I tend to wear blues, burgundy and purples. But maybe earths can wear those colors too, as long as they are the right tones. And maybe I was trying on the wrong hues of golds, rusts etc!

Any advice you could give me would be appreciated! I read Curt's website too, and the before and afters are so inspiring! I thought about signing on for a web consult, but I think I know what his answer would be already! Earth!

If I were to submit a picture, what would be best? Indoors or outdoors and wearing what color?

I have to admit, this is one of the nicest threads on Cruise Critic! Absolutely no snark, just helpful, encouraging advice!

Thanks everyone,

Lauri

Lauri, I would keep in mind that whenever we do things differently, it is hard to adjust to the change. We can like all sorts of colors, but we may not look our best in them. I would love to see pictures of you in natural daylight!

How light or dark your skin is does not mean warm or cool, so that you know. A lot of times, I will hear things like "I tan well" but that really isn't an indication of having cool or warm undertones.

Your eye color description sounds earthy. We have all sorts of colors that look good on us, generally speaking. There are warm and cool colors, clear and muted. Margaret looks wonderful in teal, and I have found some purples that work well for me.

I should add to the idea of taking pictures of yourself in natural daylight: try on different basic tops in those pictures. Black, gold, red, etc.

And congrats on the weight loss! It sounds like you are on a wonderful journey of change and taking care of yourself.

Anita, I will say that I have yet to see any real earth exercise clothes, and I've come to accept that. I find brights to be very inspiring to wear when I exercise. If I can find earth tones, I know I will be all over them in a flash.

I didn't really look a lot at the exercise wear on Athleta, since I already spent more than what I budgeted for. But I do want to take another look since I'm sending back one item and looking at a saffron red bathing suit, which is the same color as the cover up. I think I mentioned before that there were no purple or blue undertones whatsoever in the red that I was able to detect. In natural light, I think it would almost seem a little bit muted. I'm going to compare it to my color cards to see how it looks.

Melody, I find a lot of things at Kohls, but online. I don't get to our store very much because it's not convenient or all that close...when I do, it's a sea of black most of the time. I've been looking this morning and with the coupon deal I got, I might place an order.

Anita, you're going on Freedom? That is my favorite ship. I just love it. I've been on it twice, and I love it. What is your itinerary? Western or Eastern Caribbean? There will be a lot of differences between Enchantment and Freedom.

Lauri, please return here and give us more info. As you've said, we aren't a snarky bunch...these people are friends to me!

Hey Lauri!

First off...big kudos on your health and fitness journey!! It IS a process. Sounds like you have figured out a plan that your body responds to and are patient enough to let time pass so that your body can achieve a new state of balance at a healthier, happier weight and shape!

AH-sum.

I love the Vivienne Files. I especially like the way that she breaks down the core of 4 and then the additional groups of 4 to make a very functional wardrobe. I was thinking about that and wondering if I even have 4 solid colored pieces of clothing all in the same color. How versatile that it! I have done so much paring down and rethinking and KonMari on my clothing...it's not that I have a mismash of clothing...it all still works for my daily life...

BUT...it isn't easy to figure out capsule wardrobes with what I have.

And I was thinking it would be nice to get that figured out.

Anyway. Sounds like you are a bit of a planner and wanting to be somewhat systematic with rebuilding your wardrobe.

I understand not wanting to pay for a consult with Curt. However, I do have to say that if it comes down to it...he is such fun, just the interaction with him might be worth the cost. I don't know that going rate right now though. And I've looked him up...he's a busy man these days so I don't know how responsive he is on that blog.

So.

Here's what I would do to try to verify your coloring.

You need to take pictures without any makeup at all. Preferably with indirect natural light (like near a window in your house)...and preferably with a solid colored background as colors in the background can throw off the analysis of the photos.

If your hair is your natural color...then don't worry too much about pulling it back. But if you have colored your hair, then try to pull it or pin it back away from your face...for instance, if you could pull it all back into a pony tail if it were long enough. Otherwise...bobby pin or clip it back as much as you can.

Get a major close up of your face. I'd say from chest up. You need to be able to see a good bit of the color of the shirt that you are wearing.

You may have that coloring that Curt says is often mistaken for Earth but is really Ice. So I would start with just FOUR pictures with representative colors. Remember the days of Senior pictures when you just draped that black sheet around you to create a uniform top for the yearbook photos? You can do that with anything in your house that will satisfy the color requirement.

For the Ice photo...use BLACK. Ice is the ONLY one that truly shines in Black. White, because it usually has so many different variations (and because certain whites look beautiful on Air) can be very confusing. So pick the deepest, darkest, least faded black you can find.

For the Air photo...use GRAY. Any heathered gray tee shirt will do, whether it is yours or anyone in your family. Don't have to fit well, just well enough to get the photo. Be sure it is a heathered gray. There are versions of gray that work for other seasons (there are versions of ALL colors that work for everyone), so sticking with a heathered gray is usually picking an Air gray.

For the Fire photo...this one can be tricky, because you may not have a signal thing that really works. This color needs to be warm and bright. The typical color to pick is CORAL, a very orangey pink color. Another typical color is AQUA...but aqua is tricky because it comes in so many different versions. Bright, sunshine YELLOW works well...must be bright...must be more like sunshine and butter NOT lemony. Fire colors almost hurt your eyes and when you wear them, you feel almost obnoxiously bright because the warm color doesn't recede like a cool color would. A bright tomato or orange-y RED is also a good one. The Fire color is NOT neon. This may be the hardest test color for you find.

For the Earth photo...RUST. Most rust colors are Earth and not mistaken for any other season. Believe it or not, some ARMY GREEN can actually be Air, if it is that gray kind of army/olive green? So be careful there. The yellow that was like the MARIGOLD crayon...the kind of MUSTARD color is another good one, but that color often has a weird green cast to it that makes it not lovely on Earth. If you have an AUTUMN themed table cloth? That might work exceedingly well for testing Earth. We have often used deep chocolate BROWN also...but brown can be tricky as well...there are mousey (no offense mousey!) browns that don't work as well with Earth...and often, a great chocolate brown looks fabulous on Fire. So try to stick to the muddy Earthy colors for the test.

With those four pictures, if you can manage to see all four at the same time...one should jump out as being the best one. Your skin should look more blended, the reds and yellows not contrasting as much. Your eyes should pop and be the first thing that you look at when you look at the "right color" picture. Also, your lips may naturally look more like lips in your face...having some contrast to your skin.

You HAVE to do more than one picture. Get your test gear together and take those pictures one right after the other so that you can get all other variables except your shirt/draped top color as unchanged as possible. It is ONLY is studying how your appearance changes in relation to what color you are wearing that you and we can offer any kind of helpful input. Looking at one picture doesn't offer enough information...none of us are so well trained to see anything truly meaningful with one picture alone.

I don't know that I am the best to see, but if you would like, you could send your photos to me through my g mail account...which is cc anita latte at g mail dot com. I'm NOT an expert...but I have a decent eye and am willing to offer an opinion.

Everyone here is willing to offer an opinion though...so if you are comfortable posting photos...go ahead.

Yes, we are a supportive group. It's insane to think about...but we have all been talking to each other here for over 5 years now. Some of us have met in person so we are more than just cyber friends. And it's kind of fun how I have thoughts of all these ladies at different times in my "real life."

But I do want to take another look since I'm sending back one item

Laurie...this is EARTH:

http://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1023730&vid=1&pid=139513062

The forest green heather color. I wear an additional bra under the shirt, so purchasing the XL works for me. I look for support with a different bra so I don't care that the bra portion isn't super supportive. The fabric is pretty stretchy and is made to have a wrinkled look...so the larger size is my preference anyway. I haven't taken my measurements lately...I think I could get away with a L but the XL in the tank was what was available in other colors...the green is the one I paid full price for.

Anita, you're going on Freedom? That is my favorite ship. I just love it. I've been on it twice, and I love it. What is your itinerary? Western or Eastern Caribbean? There will be a lot of differences between Enchantment and Freedom.

8 nights on Eastern Caribbean. Itinerary includes Labadee, San Juan, St Maarten, and St Kitts. It's a Saturday to the following Sunday cruise. So talk about maxing out Spring Break. NO transition time at all. But it will be worth it.

I've been to Labadee, but that was on our first cruise ever back in 1990! So I'm very excited to see all the changes there. I do love going to the private beach/island resorts of the different cruise lines, so I'm looking forward to this outdoor playground for sure.

Even though we flew in and out of San Juan for our last Spring Break cruise...we didn't do anything in San Juan. It was a port on that 1990 cruise, so I have rather vague memories of that day. But I recall Mom being a bit lukewarm about San Juan, so I don't think we did much beyond walking around the historical area. And I'm sure it has changed a lot in what will be 27 years. So, really, this is another new PORT for us.

We went to St Maarten on the last cruise, but we just took the ferry over to the beach right there at downtown. I'm thinking that I want to go over to the French side? There's a fabric store or two over there...and I want to see if they have macaroons. And chocolate. We'll see. Point being, there is still a lot of new here even though we went before.

St Kitts will be totally new!! Mom and Dad have been...so I'll have to consult to see what they did.

Mom and Dad might book this same cruise too. Or rather, I think they are going to book it, but they may not go because they already had some other vacation plans for February/March and it just might be too much to tack this one on too. But we'll see. I don't know if they would be able to resist.

I got the sweetest cabin!! So excited. If you look at the deck plans, I got cabin 1864 on deck 12. It's a larger panaromic ocean view cabin. 283 sq ft!! It is the premium OV catagory, but it is still cheaper than the currently available balcony rooms. And with all that room! DS will be 16 on that cruise...OMG. It's too much to book two staterooms...but this should be nice.

I'm very excited.

Welcome Lauri , I also lost weight . I lost thirty pounds after retiring and had to buy a whole new wardrobe . I always liked JJill styling so I bought a lot of JJill separates and scarves . I love it . I can get ready in a flash & it fits my florida life style .Plus the JJill wearever clothes are perfect for travelling .

Anita , I really wanted one of those Panoramic rooms for my trans atlantic but they were booked up .Plus I rethought being up so high on such a long cruise .

We have nothing rust in our house except the sleeves of my sons shirt. Not such a great picture but didnt want to ask Hubby to do it again!

Definitely gold tones in my hair. By the way, its natural..not too many grays yet.
