Ruth, I have been considering ordering flowers for the cabin for our cruise. Are they nice, fresh flowers for the money paid? Thx for info.

I went to the Front Desk to order the flowers after I boarded. I was given a folder with some photos, description, and price, and chose which I wanted. The arrangement was put together and they were delivered about the same time as lifeboat drill.

I was very pleased with them.

I stayed on for the next cruise (two weeks later) and went to order another arrangement. I was asked if it was all right if it was delayed until later in the afternoon, as fresh flowers were being onloaded that day.

Again, they were fresh and pretty.

We sent a lady Officer flowers on one of our recent cruises and they were very pretty. Fresh and well done. The arrangements in the folder Ruth mentioned are prettier (IMO) than what I've seen offered to buy in advance of boarding. Bigger selection.

  • 3 weeks later...

When we purchase our tickets in Australia, regardless of the TA used, the sales are funnelled through a HAL connected wholesaler. As a result we subsidise your US/Canadian ticket prices by 20%, don't get any fly/cruise deals and don't get offered any Cruise Spend or Coupon books.

I hope that you all feel privileged! /sarc off.

And I'm back for more punishment in July.

Hi all,

I wish we got the coupon books in the UK, there are quite a few in that list we would actually use, especially the wine package discounts and the buy one fitness class get one free, daughter would use those for pilates and yoga.

Ahh well, we pay more and get less benefits in the UK  ...if we get addicted to cruising (which i think we might!) we may have to move across the pond! :D ;)

Sam :)

Out of 60 cruises on HAL -- we only got them 2 times and have no idea who gave them to us.

I know others seem to get them all the time.

I remember getting those coupon books handed to us as we were boarding the ship on embarkation day. What I can't remember is ever using one of the coupons. Just about everything in the coupon book was for something we either don't want or don't use! I think that is what coupon books are for, is to try to get you to buy something you wouldn't ordinarily buy.:D

I think those coupon books are given by TA's to their customers.

I have never heard of them being given out on the ship.

Everyone keeps saying that it is your TA that gives them to you -- not really true

The only time we ever got them they were left in out cabin on embarkation day, and there was some indication that they were from our TA. I don't remember exactly whether there was a card with them, or were in a marked envelope, or the booklets themselves were marked, but we knew they came from our TA. But we've used this same TA for most of our cruises, and have only gotten the booklets once! We didn't use any, and just left them in the cabin.

Good luck Marilyn:) Unlike some on the boards, I find them quite useful. Granted, we don't use them all but there are some benefits IMO:D

Isn't it nice how people are willing to share and help others on the board?:)

When I cruised on the Nieuw Amsterdam this past fall, there was a coupon book left in my mailbox on the day of disembarkation. No idea why I got it, but several on my floor had them in their boxes (and most left them behind i think).

My experience with the coupon books----For the last few cruises I have signed up for an internet package on the first day to get the extra minutes and then taken my coupon up to the internet manager to have the minutes applied for the coupon. Never a problem. I turned in my coupon on the latest cruise on the New Amsterdam and when the minutes had not been applied after a few days I asked why. I was told that since I had signed up on the first day and received the extra minutes that the coupon would not apply. He said if I bought an additional package I could use the coupon. I said that was fine as it was a long cruise and I would be buying an additional package later. When I asked for my coupon back so I could use it later, he could not find it----so he gave me the minutes anyway.

My point is why have the coupon if everyone gets a bonus for signing up anyway--- which voids the coupon????.

The other coupon I tried to use was the laundry coupon. Since I had sent a few bags in to be done, I went to the front desk and asked to have the discount applied-----Not OK. It only applies to laundry by the piece. Well who in their right mind sends laundry out by the piece so they can use a coupon when the laundry would still wind up costing more than if they had sent it by the bag or bought a length of cruise package?

I don't know what the TA's pay for those booklets but they are not of much practical use. We don't buy wine packages as my husband doesn't drink wine and I only have a glass or two in an evening.

Another curious thing---we had been given a gift card for dinner in the Tamarind with a time of 5:30 on the evening we would be in Monaco. Since it turned out that we would not be back to the ship in time, I spoke to the person at the podium outside the Lido on the day before the reservation and cancelled it in case someone else wanted that time. I told him we would like to use it a few days later and I would get back to him the next day to remake the reservation. He told me that if I could not give him a time and date right then and there, the gift card would be cancelled. Well, I really didn't know the time we would want just then, so we lost our gift card. That seemed a little odd but I didn't press it. Perhaps I should have.

I have a funny feeling when you get a gift card from your agent for Tamarind and Pinnacle they put a random date and 5:30 as a default time. It keeps their booking system more organized with a slot for people getting the cards instead of people just showing up on the cruise all wanting to book a time. I had dinner on the NA in Pinnacle with two other people who also had 5:30 gift cards and we wanted to all eat together later, and on a different date. So we had to have eveyone's booking number, ready to do it all at the same time before they would change our time and date.

The same thing happened to me on the Volendam last March. Since I knew I had used the coupon on other cruises, even though I had first day bonus minutes, I questioned the decision, but the Internet Manager pointed out some small print (that has always been there, and looks vague to me).

She was new on the job, so I didn't know if she was following the rules precisely, where other, more experienced Internet Managers might have let it go, or if the rules had changed, or if she was simply mistaken.

In a way I'm glad to see that it wasn't just that one manager on that one ship.

For the op and anyone else that wants a coupon booklet IF you haven't booked your cruise or have one on the horizon, I just got an email from my on line TA and they are offering the coupon booklets as part of their Memorial day sale (Wednesday until Friday).

probably explains how you get them too ;)

Our gift card was from the captain and so was a freebie so to speak. If it had been paid for by our agent I would have raised a fuss about it being cancelled----or at least reported it to the agent so she could get her money back.
