Depends on what kind of on board credit. Some types are non-refundable. Non-refundable on board credits would be things like OBC for booking on board, shareholder benefit, WOW sale OBC. Refundable credits would be Visa points, TA perks, price drop OBC.

Not sure if it's true or not, or how they tell the difference, but I was told that OBC that are given by the line as a promotion, etc, are "used up" first. We usually have our gratuities automatically added on the first day, so this usually takes care of initial obc's, and we always have a credit balance at the end.

I can't even imagine having unused onboard credit. :p;)
ME EITHER!! Its vacation

Well it does really depend on how much credit you have. If your gratuities, speciality restaurants and excursions are paid before boarding and you have been given a large amount of OBC as a promotion etc. instead of a discount, some people may well want to have this refunded at the end of the cruise Anyway the question was regarding unused credit, not an opinion on whether you should or should not have any OBC left. Not everybody has large bar bills, and everybody's budget is their own business.

Once , we never got the credit so to be on the safe side we always take the corresponding amount out at the casino. It is worth the small fee ($3 per hundred) to have the cash. After all, in most cases the OBC was free so the fee is no big deal.

Thanks I thought you could do this. Just did not know if there was a fee. I agree it is well worth the fee to get the cash back.

Just back from the Explorer and we had $3 left over OBC on the last night and they gave it back to me in cash (which I promptly donated to the casino). Depending on the ship you are on, you'll be able to check your account from your TV and if you notice that you'll have some OBC left over, you can go down to Guest Relations and they will give you cash. I didn't think $3 was worth going back on my CC.

Just did this on both our Liberty and Oasis cruises in March. We had quite a bit of OBC, but the BofA Visa was offering triple points for settling a SeaPass card with the BofA Visa. So, as soon as the OBC showed on our in-room TV, I went to guest relations and cashed out (yes, real cash not a credit back to the card). We then got 3 points per dollar spent when we settled our account at the end of the cruise.

One caveat is they will not cash out or credit back to you anything that was given to you by RCI (booking a cruise on a cruise, shareholder benefit, etc.).

So you can cash out early, use your RCI Visa to close out your SeaPass card (to get double points) and then (if you are disciplined) use the cash from the OBC to pay the bill.

Hope this helps

We have always had any unused OBC, whether it was refundable or non-refundable, appear as a credit on your credit card statement the following month.

Not to confuse things, but the $3 fee applies only for casino use of OBC. As other have said, if you have OBC that you have purchased, or from your TA and have some remaining at the end of your cruise, you can have the balance placed on your cc or given to you in cash. There is no fee for that. (And I would say that dirtgirl and SuchAVirgo were just joking about the possibility of having any leftover OBC). ;)

We don't tend to spend much onboard, so sometimes we do have unused credit. On the Navigator last year we got $60 back in cash at the pursers desk on the last night. We had quite a bit of OBC on that cruise and used some for excursions and gratuities.

On the same ship this winter we were told our $100 OBC could not be refunded on the last day or used for gratuities, so we spent it on photos. We rarely buy the ship's photos anymore, but it worked out fine with this trip as we had grandchildren with us and we were able to get some nice 8X10's of them.

I think it depends on what kind of OBC it is; from the cruise line, from your travel agent, some 'special' OBC, etc. What is hard is figuring out ahead of time just what it can be used for.
