The response that I got from Cruise Critic claimed the answer came from Royal Caribbean PR team. Perhaps Captain Dahlgren in his higher role within the company is only there to over see things and not the actual captain or perhaps Captain Dahlgren is the public one. When Oasis launched Captain Wright was in a similar role within the company and took Oasis out as the public face along with another captain. He was onboard until January 16th though after taking delivery in late October or early November.

I consider a cc article to be media - that simple. I also had lunch with a Q captain this weekend. ;) I'll leave it at that.

 

Gina....the more I cruise, and the more I read of some of the posters on Cruise Critic, the more I just want to lurk.

 

I just got off of the NV today, and have some updated information, and now I choose not to reveal anything, as some just wish to slam me. There will come a point where you might feel the same way.

 

I'm just looking forward to the day the we will be on a cruise again.

 

Speaking of "Phantom Captains", Frank Martinsen, who is very well liked by his crew, is no longer visible to the passengers, save for the first formal night, and is likely to be setting an example for other captains to follow.

 

Royal Caribbean is changing, and the word is......at least from this administration.......Captains are to play a different role, a bit more aloof from the guests onboard.

Very interesting, I wonder why RCI would move in that direction. I've always felt that the unique role of the Captain is one of the things that distinguishes cruising from other types of vacations and makes cruising special. I've seen many Captains (mostly on other lines) who didn't speak the best English and mostly stayed behind the scenes, but I've mostly observed the opposite on RCI. Sorry to hear RCI is moving in that direction.

How very sad for all us cruisers who love to see the captains!!! Sorry, I personally feel this is a mistake, however, I do understand why this is the cruise companies position. Just sad for all of us who LOVE to see the captains around the ship as we cruise.

Can you explain this upcoming change further?

 

Captain Frank Martinsen has never been very visible except from the welcome reception and a short daily bridge report. So this is not a change.

 

They might cancel the Captain`s table with the new dining concept but what else? Cancel announcements from the Captain at noon or before departure? Cancel Captain`s Corner? Cancel his presence at C&A or other events? Take away Johnny`s motorbike?

On some ships the captain will invite passengers to dine in Chops or another more private location. There is no requirement that dinner must be in the MDR at the csptain's table. I believe the Quantum captains will continue the tradition of eating with guests at the location and time of their choosing. It just might not be a formal event. Or, maybe it still will be in the one formal restaurant.

Hi Rick, just wanted to second your "lurk" statement. Seems like there are more negative voices than there were back when we started posting here. The subjects that cause the most discussion also have become more negative. So, as life moves forward I am concerned that the "Good old days" both here on CC and on RCI may be behind us. I still have a great time every cruise. Hope you and yours are well and happy. :)

Hi Gina, I think you are 100% correct. Marilyn and I have dinned with Captains, Hotel Directors, and other officers in most of the restaurants on the ships. The lack of a MDR table is not the end of that social event IMHO. :)

no, Capt Claus is first, my spreadsheet has Gus first and I don't know how to change that block in the Excel program. When I post the info, I forget to manually change it. :o
