teacherD1 Posted August 24, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 24, 2011 Am going to be on the Ruby in Europe and have a question about getting money for gambling. I read you can charge up to $1,500/day for gambling on your charge card that you give to Princess for all of your expenses onboard. A friend said that they will charge me 3% for doing so and yet it is not mentioned anywhere. What is the truth? (Not that I intend to charge the max LOL.) Toto2Kansas Posted August 24, 2011 #2 Share Posted August 24, 2011 If you go to the casino cage and get cash, then yes, they tack on a 3% charge. If you draw money out of of the slots to play (instructions on each slot machine), then they don't add on the 3%.
cpj Posted August 24, 2011 #3 Share Posted August 24, 2011 Yes there is a 3 percent charge. Its what the credit card companies are chargeing them. I dont agree but I understand why they do it.
Toto2Kansas Posted August 24, 2011 #4 Share Posted August 24, 2011 They add this charge so that passengers don't just draw money out at the casino cage for use other than in the casino. Some don't like to carry a lot of cash with them, and have just used this method to obtain spending money for tours and to take on shore. If you have ever dealt with credit card charges through a business, each time that card is used, the provider is charged a certain percentage right off the top. (with Princess is must be 3%) Although some cruise lines don't do it this way, it has been the way Princess handles it for as far back as I can remember. ;)
betterthanworking Posted August 24, 2011 #5 Share Posted August 24, 2011 No charge if you add to your account through one of the slot machines! You can also then go to the cage and get cash from your account. It's like getting cash from your credit card but not having it start to charge interest immediately. Lots of answers above mine, so I won't repeat. What I will mention is that you can send yourself casino cash before you board. This amount will be immediately charged to your credit card and if you pay off your balance every month you incur no charges. This way there will be vouchers for said amount in your cabin and you just present them to the casino cage to get your cash.
betterthanworking Posted August 24, 2011 #7 Share Posted August 24, 2011 We don't gamble but we do always have some OBC dollars left at the end of the cruise. I go to the casino slot machine, open an account, and put an amount of money on my cruise card then walk to the cage and get cash with no 3% surcharge,

The Grand has already done it. If you don't gamble, you can't take the cash out. They informed me of this at the end of our May cruise. Even if you spend a quarter, that's considered gambling and you can then cash out.

Belle Posted August 25, 2011 #10 Share Posted August 25, 2011 Getting money at the tables, they WERE NOT charging the 3%. You sign for it..no charge..they were telling everyone! Slots weren't charging. Don't know about going up to the Casino Cage if charging or not.
teacherD1 Posted August 25, 2011 Author #11 Share Posted August 25, 2011 So does the 3% charge actually vary according to the ship? There seems to be a few conflicting answers given me.
Toto2Kansas Posted August 25, 2011 #12 Share Posted August 25, 2011 So does the 3% charge actually vary according to the ship? There seems to be a few conflicting answers given me. The 3% charge doesn't vary according to ship. If you go to the casino cage to get money charged to your shipboard account, you will be charged the 3%. If you download to the slots, or get money at the tables 'to gamble' no 3% will be charged.

Pia1913 Posted August 25, 2011 #14 Share Posted August 25, 2011 Are there ATMs on Princess ships? If so, what is the transaction fee? Yes, there are machines and if they work, the fee is $3.50 or $3.95.

The only difference is that when you cash out your winnings, the machines do not pay you in cash and you must download your winnings. Instructions on how to do this are on every slot machine, and if you need assistance, they will be glad to help you open a slot bank on your casino card (AKA cruise card). Last October there was a 3%charge for cash at the tables on the Crown, and similarly for cruises before that one. How do you get money at the tables? Thanks!Put your cruise card on the table and tell the dealer how much you want. They will take the card, swipe it and bring back a slip for you to sign. Then the dealer gives you the chips. You may take the chips to the cage if you want actual cash. BTW I've learned my lesson and for my upcoming cruise Sunday I purchased casino credit in advance. No charge. Andy, I think you missed the part where it says "To Gamble" ;) I should have phrased it differently that at the tables you will purchase chips (sorry for my error). Getting just cash does add a 3% charge. Edited August 25, 2011 by Toto2Kansas

AndyTheK Posted August 25, 2011 #23 Share Posted August 25, 2011 That's very strange Andy................not sure why you were charged.:confused:I expected it - it is written somewhere - but I can't remember where. Not only that but this charge is discussed all around the boards. This is actually the first time I've seen anyone say that there is no charge for chips at the tables! If you're right then there will be no need for purchasing casino credit in advance. I'll ask when I'm aboard this coming week.

Andy, I would ask to talk to the Casino hostess or the Casino manager if they charged me 3% for chips at the tables while I was gambling. Good luck, I hope you find out the actual rules. Maybe I just got lucky.

Never bought chips at the tables but have on many occasions used my card to buy chips at the cage and never been charged the 3%. If they were to charge me the % when I am sitting playing at the tables I would have a bloody fit:mad: We board the Emerald in a couple weeks and I also will make an attempt to find out what is going on.
