Australian family Posted September 13, 2011 #4 Share Posted September 13, 2011 Here it is, heard a bit on the radio today about this. What an insult to Australians. If they think we are in a rut, why are they sending more cruise ships here? Australia in a rut, claims new report A nationwide study released by Carnival Cruise Lines shows that an increasing reluctance to try new things is having a limiting effect on the mood, happiness, energy and productivity of Australians. It may also help to explain while domestic tourism is on the decline. Social trend analyst Mark McCrindle claims that a growing resistance to adventure and playfulness is holding Australians back from realising their true potential as individuals and as a nation. Key findings from the research include: Most Australians are currently stuck in routine, including living in the same style of clothing (74 percent), eating and cooking the same meals every day (59 percent) and socialising at the same places every weekend (59 percent). Over two thirds (68 percent) sleep on the same side of the bed every night and wouldn’t consider changing. Four in five (80 percent) blame technology and more time spent social networking, playing video games and browsing the Internet for a national decline in adventurousness. Four in five (84 percent) cite an uncertain economic climate as reason they stay at home more than they used to. A third (31 percent) believe the nation’s energy to try new things has significantly waned in the past few years. Nearly a third (31 percent) say they can’t afford to break out of their routine or that family limits their choices (25 percent).
oskarNZ Posted September 13, 2011 #5 Share Posted September 13, 2011 LOL, what a ridiculous article. Those statistics could represent any country in the Western World right now. Except perhaps the last one. I think the fact that 2/3's of Australians are financially stable enough to break from routines, says a lot about the relative strength of your economy. In some countries right now there are a lot more than 1/3 doing it tough. I suppose I must be in rut right now because I always sleep on the same side of the bed. What a load of rubbish. :D:rolleyes:
icat2000 Posted September 13, 2011 #6 Share Posted September 13, 2011 What a stupid article. Australians are some of the most well travelled people in the world and Australians are taking overseas holidays in greater numbers too.
BrusselsGirl07 Posted September 13, 2011 #7 Share Posted September 13, 2011 Doesn't everyone sleep on the same side of the bed??? What has that got to do with being adventurous? We have been to over 40 different countries and always sleep on the same side of the bed!
Debsta Posted September 13, 2011 #8 Share Posted September 13, 2011 I don't think this report was commissioned by Carnival. They just picked it up from the guy who did it. For what reason he did the survey I have no idea.....it seems more aimed at the domestic market by Tourism Australia actually
Gold Coast Cruisers Posted September 13, 2011 #9 Share Posted September 13, 2011 Quite true....to a point, but that article could be about any country. I can immediately think of many countries who are exactly the same. Hope whoever wrote the article didn't get paid for it.... Jilly:)
Bella cruiser Posted September 13, 2011 #10 Share Posted September 13, 2011 Hmm, this sounds like it would fit many countries. What a stupid study, I fail to see how habitually sleeping on the same side of the bed each night is indicative of not being adventurous:rolleyes:...that's just ridiculous. They must have heard that we have been patronized by Celebrity and want in on the action. Disappointing.
sparky-elpaso Posted September 13, 2011 #11 Share Posted September 13, 2011 A lot of those stats would probably fit Americans too - including me. However, that doesn't mean that I don't want to see the world. Circumnavigating Australia in Feb next year is first on our "bucket list".
room010 Posted September 13, 2011 #12 Share Posted September 13, 2011 We may be "in a rut" but we have avoided the Global Financial Crisis, the Aussie $ is at an all time high, and it seems that a few big cruiselines (but not Carnival, oh well) are now going to base their ships here. rugbypopsie Posted September 13, 2011 Author #13 Share Posted September 13, 2011 Sorry the link did not work..I check the site regularly sometimes the articles are really interesting about travel generally. I thought the study was off the mark..certainly I believe Aussies and Kiwis have always been great travellers and with our dollar being up are seeking travel experiences far and wide. floatie Posted September 13, 2011 #14 Share Posted September 13, 2011 I hope carnival are not basing their business decisions on those "facts"? With the continually growing number of ships being deployed to Australia there appears to be a discrepancy somewhere. I will hazard a guess and say the research results are pure ##@&^*!
Rare Kinkacruiser Posted September 13, 2011 #15 Share Posted September 13, 2011 I was stunned that mention was made to people sleeping on the same side of the bed. What has that got to do with anything? With the economic downturn, I have noticed that teachers in my age group and older are having to stay at work longer to try to recoup losses. I agree with others that this article could refer to almost any country at the moment.
cjm66 Posted September 13, 2011 #16 Share Posted September 13, 2011 This story seems to have come from a joint press release from Galaxy, the research company and Carnival. The report from Travel News makes the link clearer and there is a similar slant in The Adelaide (Advertiser). It seems that Carnival still believes in our spirit of adventure and that is why they are bringing Carnival Cruising style to us. They do need to rethink their PR approach for the Australian market. http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/australians-losing-spirit-of-adventure/story-e6frea6u-1226135278372 http://www.news.com.au/travel/news/adventurous-australians-becoming-an-endangered-species/story-e6frfq80-1226134953477 Colleen
moyaroo Posted September 13, 2011 #17 Share Posted September 13, 2011 OK so everybody tonight make your partner/spouse/friend/whatever think you have totally lost it and try to sleep on the other side of the bed! maybe Micky Arrinson sleeps around, but in my house . . . Funny how we all jumped on that horse. LOL
The Fox Posted September 13, 2011 #18 Share Posted September 13, 2011 What a ridiculous article. If we are in a rut....gee I am glad I dont live overseas.Maybe more Aussies are experincing other cruise lines both here and overseas.Maybe people are waking up to the carnival ships (P&O) and realising they represent better val;ue. Billy and Charlie's Mum Posted September 13, 2011 #19 Share Posted September 13, 2011 In the article it said they researched 1000 people...... where from? These studies can be manipulated purely by where they do the survey. This is total c**p....... every overseas cruise we take has more and more Aussies onboard.... can't believe they gave credence to this garbage, but then again they reported on that Dan the Man article! davethescot Posted September 14, 2011 #20 Share Posted September 14, 2011 I think everybody is missing the point. The article is not aimed at people like us, those who take cruises and have a sense of adventure. They are trying to tie this in with a marketing campaign to get more people cruising. Carnival's who ethos is about adventure and fun so I think they are trying to get people off the sofa and onto the ship. Have they achieved this, probably not, but again it's not really aimed at us. I agree that most of the article is stupid but I have seen a lot worse out there!

I agree that most of the article is stupid but I have seen a lot worse out there! Each article seems to have taken a slighty different slant in reporting from what was presumably a press release. Some stressed the more quirky findings , others made the link to the Carnival promotion. The actual research could have been well done and quite valid. Who knows. Having sent out Press Releases in the past and had journalists and sub editors slant their stories very oddly indeed, I know how easy it is for this to happen.
