tinaparrotthead Posted October 11, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 11, 2011 Has anyone tried and been successful using Skype and Ship Wi-Fi ? We will be on Serenade of the Seas Nov. 6th and I would very much like to Skype with Daughter and Granddaughter!!! Just wondering if anyone has tried on any RC ships and what has been your experience with Wi-Fi on board. Thanks for all your responses!!!!! tinaparrotthead Posted October 12, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted October 12, 2011 Is the wi-fi decent? Does it vary from ship to ship?
Clarea Posted October 12, 2011 #7 Share Posted October 12, 2011 Is the wi-fi decent? Does it vary from ship to ship? My experience is that the ship internet speed varies from slow to very slow.

Just wondering if anyone has tried on any RC ships and what has been your experience with Wi-Fi on board. Thanks for all your responses!!!!! There was a sign on the ship that specifically stated that Skype "may not" work. Translation -- Skype does not work. I tried it, and failed. tahqa Posted October 12, 2011 #9 Share Posted October 12, 2011 The ships typically block the ports that Skype uses, so you're probably better off finding some other alternative.
Richiebaseball Posted October 12, 2011 #10 Share Posted October 12, 2011 The internet is satellite which depending on the number of users can be somewhat slow to agonizingly slow. VOIP services like Skype, Magic Jack, etc. have worked in the past at least as far as the voice goes. There's certainly not enough bandwidth for video. However some time ago most(all?) Royal Caribbean ships began blocking the ports that VOIP services use. Every once in a while I'll read where someone has used it but in my experience it has not worked for a couple of years now I guess.
Cruising Erin Posted October 12, 2011 #11 Share Posted October 12, 2011 I used Skype last year on the Navigator. It was hit or miss with the service. We did manage to connect a couple of times but it was a challenge.
alexkrn46 Posted October 12, 2011 #12 Share Posted October 12, 2011 On the Oasis I was told it was blocked. Best to take a laptop to an internet cafe as others suggested. Quicker and less frustrating.
Jborosara Posted October 12, 2011 #13 Share Posted October 12, 2011 in Alaska this summer, our two oldest sons both skyped with girlfriends every night - oftentimes for half and hour to an hour with a few issues, but not enough to keep them from coming back every night...my advice, though, if you plan on skyping, buy a package - i spent 150 bucks for 500 minutes which the two of them used completely up....but it was a bargain to maintain the peace in my family
sg1phileshipper Posted October 12, 2011 #14 Share Posted October 12, 2011 I was on the Freedom last month and started my skype just out of curiousity, because that question gets asked a lot. I have a recent laptop and it didn't work. I figure skype must have been blocked. Cindy
