individual sign and sail- tip question

We are sailing next Saturday with my 18 yr old son. We are paying for his tips and have paid for his cruise. He is responsible for all his onboard expenses after that. So, he was going to set up his sign and sail account with cash to cover his expenses. The question is- will the tips show up on his account if he's technically booked in a room with my dh- or will it all show up on my dh account so that we can just pay it that way. I don't want my son to run out of his cash account because he got charged for his room gratuities. I hope that makes some sort of sense.

Sorry for another tipping thread. I just needed technical information for how it worked so that we know what we are doing!

Could you just go ahead and pre-pay his tips for him?

If we are leaving on Saturday, do we still have time to call and prepay tips? I really didn't worry about it until I started thinking about it today. This would probably be the easiest way to deal with it. I don't have a problem prepaying the tips now. I'll have to pay them in a week anyway. :)

since the tips is per person then it means that the tips will be on his sail n sign account..this is why carnival requires a set amount of cash upfront to cover the tips

That is not true at all. There is no requirement for tips.

They need a minimum of $100 in cash (they prefer $350)when you board and its not for tips, its for onboard expenses.Auto tip is a convenience not a requirement.

If you put up $100 when you board and spend $31 they will attempt to autotip but it will bounce and they will call you to guest services.

This is what I don't get.....why call me to guest services when the autotip is for my convenience?:confused:

Its inconvenient to have to go to guest services.

I'm glad you posted this question because the answers helped me out.

DD and I are cruising together soon (my treat) and I was debating how to cover her tips since I expect she'll use a credit card for her sail and sign. I think on check in day I'll just give her the cash to cover her tips - she can pay it on her account or charge everything and pay when her credit card is due.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry to butt-in, but I didn't want to start yet another tipping/S&S thread, so if you'll indulge me, I have a question:

There are ten of us traveling on the Spirit on 12/23.

My mother would like to pay for all gratuities and then in a perfect world, would like to get us all cash based S&S cards for extras like drinks, coffee drinks, gifts, arcades and casinos. I think she'd like to get us each a card for $200, so...

1. how does she do that?

2. Can we put up the cash on board to get us such a card or does it have to be backed by a credit card?

3. When the card is used up, will it just stop working?

4. What if there is a balance at the end of the cruise?

5. What about the lanyards? Is this something we get at the casino, or do we bring our own?

6. Anything else I should know about S&S cards, especially for children?

On a related note, are kids also charged the $11.50 a day for gratuities?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide!

:)

1. how does she do that? The easiest way would be for her to make a cash deposit on each card, either at check in or when you first board. She could make the deposit with cash or her CC, which ever works for her.

2. Can we put up the cash on board to get us such a card or does it have to be backed by a credit card? As mentioned above cash is fine, but you should have a back up in case you use all the cash.

3. When the card is used up, will it just stop working? Yes and no. The card, is also your room key and your boarding pass to get on and off the ship. If you run over your cash limit you will be called to guest services and informed that you are out of cash and given options to add more cash, give a CC to use for additional charges, or not be allowed to make any more purchases. It will still work fine for everything except purchasing.

4. What if there is a balance at the end of the cruise? Balance due? They will not let you off the ship until it is paid. Money owing to you will be returned in the form of a check that can be cashed at Guest Service before you leave the ship or at the bank once you get home.

5. What about the lanyards? Is this something we get at the casino, or do we bring our own? Sorry never use them so I have no idea.

6. Anything else I should know about S&S cards, especially for children? They act as room keys and you can get an extra if the kids are in a different room and you need access.

On a related note, are kids also charged the $11.50 a day for gratuities? Yes, unless they are under 2. (I think 2 is the age).

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide!

2 and over pay tips and the casino will give you lanyards for every adult guest, but the adults have to present themselves there. The wouldn't punch a hole in my husband's for me nor would they give us any for our children.

I haven't sailed since 2000, so I don't remember very well about the lanyards and I can't figure out what the hole punching is all about.

Should we get lanyards and punch them ourselves?

The ones from the gift shop have a plastic sleeve you put your card in so you don't need to punch a hole it your card. They're nice looking too! :)

My mother is hyperventilating, and I think the lanyard question has put her over the edge! :)

Maybe it's the fact that we're leaving in 12 days?

At any rate, how much do these super-cool Carnival lanyards with the plastic sleeves cost, and will the kids be at risk of losing them as they zoom down the water slide?

Thanks!

I take my own lanyard and hole punch and as soon as I get the card I punch it and put it on the lanyard so I don't lose it. Make sure you don't punch the end that goes into the cabin door.

On Inspiration cruise 11/28/11 they didn't charge the new tip rate.

I had someone at one of the bars punch mine for me on the last cruise, unfortunately they punched it so that every time they had to swipe the card, they had to take it off the lanyard to do it. Duh! I don't know why Carnival don't just pre-punch all cards so that we don't have to run around looking for someone to punch it when we get on board, along with the other 3000 people looking to do the same thing.
