Vegetarian on the Maasdam

In March I will be cruising with a vegetarian friend. She's asked about whether she'll be able to find food she can eat. While my general feeling was that they offer vegetarian meals, I don't really know specifics b/c I never noticed, not being a vegetarian myself.

I assume there will be vegetarian options at the Lido? What about the main dining room? Would there be any reason she'd want to go to the Pinnacle? I think she eats fish (not sure about that, though).

Thanks in advance!:)

I'm pretty certain there is a vegetarian offering each day in the MDR. The Lido she should be fine as she can just select what she wants.

There was a thread here yesterday posted by KK that had the Pinnacle Grill menu.

Every night the dining room has one vegetarian offering. In addition, there is a separate vegetarian menu from which she could order. I suggest she ask about that menu in advance, in case it would be easier for all concerned if that order were placed the night before.

The Pinnacle does have at least a couple of vegetarian selections. My older grandgirl was very happy with her choice there.

She'll have no trouble finding vegetarian food. The regular main dining room menu offered more vegetarian foods on our recent Nieuw Amsterdam cruises than we have ever noticed before. Some nights there were four or five things designated vegetarian right on the regular menu.

They also offer a separate vegetarian menu she can speak with a dining supervisor about. They have plenty of guests who have specific dietary needs and being vegetarian is certainly common.

Enjoy!

If she has questions about preparation of the Lido food she should ask to speak with the Lido Chef - he is there whenever the Lido is serving. He will be able to advise her of "hidden" ingredients. In my experience they were wonderful about this and happy to do it. m--

You can call Ship Services at 1-800-541-1576 and ask for the begetarian menus be e-mailed to you.

Also -- once on the ship -- she can ask to see the begetarian menu as well.

More choices in the dining room as she can see the next evening's menu and decide if there is anything there she can eat -- and if there isn't -- she can request something be made for her the next evening. She can't do that in the Lido.

Sorry to say that Holland America was not a good cruise line choice for my strict vegetarian daughter. At that time she had to order the night before from the vegetarian menu. The vegetarian menu was limited, did not appeal to her, and did not change throughout the cruise.

Dining room staff were no help at finding out if vegetarian looking entrees contained meat products. We never knew whether an apple pie crust was made with lard, if a salad dressing contained gelatin, or what they may have used chicken or beef broth in.

That is why is was great to be able to talk with the Lido chef, who is VERY accessible, and ask about preparation. m--

I am just off the Eurodam in December and happy to report that we were very pleased with the vegetarian offerings. We are 4 star mariners, and have never seen so many options before. With the exception of one evening, there was always two vegetarian entrees, sometimes three, available, in addition to a couple of appetizers, soups and/or salads on the dinner menus. And, they had them marked as vegetarian too, which is new to us. With so many options, there was no need to look at the standard vegetarian menu and eliminated the hassle of ordering the night before. Not sure this will be the same on the Maasdam, but thought I would relay my recent experience.

I posted this menu a few weeks ago.

It was a menu for MDR, a sea day, on Nieuw Amsterdam, Collectors Cruise we boarded November 20, 2011.

I found this menu very interesting and brought it home to re-read. What interested me were the number of Vegetarian offerings on one menu. I love veggies and eat more than the average person but this many on one menu surprises me. I'm sure Vegetarians were happy.

Appetizers

Fruit Ceviche - Vegetarian

Seared Ahi Tuna Carpaccio

Eggplant Caponata - Vegetarian

Caribbean Fish Cake and Crispy Shrimp

Soups and Salad

Caribbean Pepper Pot Soup

Curried Breadfruit Soup - Vegetarian

Chilled Guanabana Soup - Vegetarian

Great Sound Salad - Vegetarian

Entrees

Pasta Parcel with Zucchini Ribbons - Vegetarian

Avocado Citrus Salad - Vegetarian

Grilled Salmon with Tomato Broth

Caribbean Braised Beef Pot Roast

Island Spiced Rack of Pork

Caribbean 'Jerk' Chicken Breast

Curried Vegetable Cutlet - Vegetarian

I had no Appetizer or Soup/Salad but enjoyed the Curried Vegetable Cutlet.

Wow! That looks yummy! My friend isn't as "strict" a vegetarian as that woman's daughter was, so I don't think she'll have a problem. I'm going to refer her to this thread. Thanks so much for all of your answers. I had no idea there would be so many choices! :D

That menu is a big, big improvement over what we experienced. If this is fleet wide every meal it will allow for seamless vegetarian dining, something long overdue at Holland America.
