What happened to the late night themed buffets?

Another example of Carnivalization?

 

My Carnival cruise had a theme buffet at 11 pm every night. So, I'm guessing that what ever the reason, it has nothing to do with Carnivalizing HAL. I'm guessing all the cruise lines are looking to reduce their costs and maybe on some itineraries late night buffets are not well attended. I found it a little late for my tastes but went once because our dinner servers worked the buffet too and they invited us every night.

Funny, I was thinking pork pies and french fries w/gravy.

 

 

Ahhh, poutine. :p I would sail halfway around the world for great poutine. The best so far we have had was at Boneta, in Gastown Vancouver - great place to dine before you leave for Alaska.

iv'e been on the zaandam and the volendam and never even knew there was a late night snack i'm afraid i am one more of the early to bed crowd, it was dinner, the first seating for the show, listen to the piano player for an hour or so then bed, beside who can eat that late and sleep without massive indigestion?

On the holiday Statendam cruise recently and there was a different ethnic late night "snack" offered each evening. We did attend the dessert extravaganza for a look and taste, but other than that, saved the calories for earlier food adventures.

No, I'm not kidding...the theme one night was Canadian! I honestly could not tell just what made it Canadian. They did offer salmon in a maple syrup glaze as one of the choices. Not that maple syrup makes it Canadian but it was my only guess![/quote]

 

 

And why wouldn't maple syrup make it a Canadian theme? :confused: It's the best! :) Perhaps there should have been a Mountie on display along with a beaver! :rolleyes:

I am booked on Westerdam on 3/4 and hear people calling it a collector's cruise too. I'm not familiar with the term, can you explain what that means? Glad you had the theme buffets, as I always thought they were fun

 

I'm with you- on the cruise and in being clueless about the term "collector's". So I guess I'm just on the first leg, hence my cluelessness :o.

 

And I hate to admit it but I can't remember the last time I was walking around on a ship past 10pm. Isn't that terrible??? Those were the good old days, though. I just get so tired after being in the sun all day!

When I started cruising years ago, it seemed the ships had more of a night life in general, and the midnight buffet was a novelty that many enjoyed as part of it.

Lately, it seems that there are only a handful of passengers up there, and mostly staff--entertainers, casino dealers, etc. having their meal there.

Poutine! French Fries, cheese curds and gravy. We call the pork pies tourtière (minced pork, or beef/lamb).

 

The only truely Canadian "invented" foods are:

 

Butter Tarts

Nanaimo bars

Bloody Ceasar (although this is more of a drink - depending on the garnish)

Boy, times have changed! Don't you remember the HUGE lines for the midnight buffet extravaganza each night? With ice carvings like most of us had never seen before and beautifully presented fruits and vegetables shaped so inventively?!! And all that FOOD! I've got so many photos of midnight buffets during my early cruising years. But, back then, there wasn't always food available all day long, so maybe it made more sense. And not always very many choices for room services. I can even remember making sure I had early seating after noticing that if I had late seating I didn't have any stomach room for midnight buffet! ha ha ha!!

 

Now they don't have enough people come to midnight buffet to make it worth it?! I guess we ARE getting old!:eek:
