I just read that OBC can't be used as cash. So what is it used for?? I heard you can't close out your account and retrieve as cash? Someone please explain OBC to me because I don't understand. On my next cruise I have $300 OBC. I want to use it to the MAX. Thanks for your input.

You can use it for everything.

You can even cash it out at the end of the cruise when you close out your account.

I did on my last cruise.

That's incorrect. There are two types of OBCs, refundable, which you can get cash for at the end of the cruise, and nonrefundable, which must be spent on board and can't be taken in cash.

I have had OBC given with cruise purchase and OBC purchased for me as a gift or by myself to help cover costs. I used them for any purchase where I swiped my cabin card ( drinks, specialty restaurants, store items, in room movies). I did not cash out at the end but once my account was settled I received a refund in the mail about 3 weeks later for the difference. I used to use for excursions. I assume you still can if you reserve from on board the ship.

Actually, you don't "cash it out" at the end of the cruise. If you have any remaining OBC, they will include a check with your charge summary underneath your door the last night of your cruise. You can however take the check to Guest Services and "cash it" before you go home. Beware... the lines will be loooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggg.

Some say there is non-refundable and refundable OBC. I (along with MANY others), have never had anything NOT refunded that was classified "non-refundable". If you have both (so called) non-refundable and (regular) refundable OBC, they will take the NR first and then give you a check the last night for whatever is left.

After all of that EZ Speak ---- easy answer is: if you have OBC that you don't use, you will 99.9% of the time - refundable or not (by Carnival FAQ) - get a check under your door when you wake up and make that last horrible walk down the hallway on your way to disembark.

May the force be with you.......... :D

That's all and well, but this is the NCL board :)

We use our OBC for excursions, drinks, upcharge restaurants, and in the shops on board. You use it when you swipe your card or if you haven't used it, they deduct your OBC from your total bill to lessen your final charges.

NCL doesn't work this way. Maybe at one time they did but as of Jan. 1 this year, they've been getting very strict about the non-refundable OBC. It's not just "some say" that there are two types. NCL says that and they do make the distinction.

It is not cash. What would you do with the cash?

You use it for:

drinks

excursions

stupid stuff

photos

special extra expense events

extra charge restaurants

special coffee

gift shop

To persuade us to book directly with them and not a TA (saving them the commission) I was given a $350 obc and told I could use it towards tips and dining options. This was a supposed discount!!!

Now they appear to have moved the goalpost!

However, I will discuss this on board, as my contract with them was that it could be used for tips. If they now refuse (a contract with a cruiseline is worth less than loo paper - unless you are the cruise company:D).

Could I then have the tips removed, but leave $216 obc and tell them where to put it - towards tips preferably:D:D

What action do you all suggest?

Yes. If you feel NCL is not honoring your agreement you could certainly remove the DSC. Then with your remaining nonrefundable OBC you could fill out gratuity voucher (s) to use up the remaining OBC and designate exactly who you want the gratuity to go. Waiter, steward etc.

That is actually a great idea and interesting way to deal with NCL 'moving the goalpost'. Go for it.

Thank you.

We shall see - I would 'hope' that the powers-that-be on board, will make a sensible compromise, but as a much-cruised cruiser, 'sensible' does not always work on a ship:D:D

You really need to let go of this idea, Jim and Fine Dandy. NCL DOES NOT WORK THIS WAY!

The net result of this action is the voucher money is turned in, pooled, and redistributed, as the person chose to remove the DSC. If the DSC is left in place, the cash tips are the NCL employee's to keep.

So, if I take this action, the result is what I wish - back to being pooled as they were in the first place, but deducted from my obc!!!:D

Now even I am getting confused.

Another thing - if I buy chips in the Casino off my seapass, go on odds and evens and then cash in the chips, would this work? Risking those darned zeros though!!::eek: But at least we will get some funds out. Then use the 'winnings' to pay for the tips!!! (Its quite a short cruise, we don't drink and don't do the excursions as we know the Canaries very well. A couple of nice dinners and a few coffees doesn't do $350!!).

Anyway, bottom line is that I shouldn't have to resort to these 'depths', as they should honour the agreement if they have any principles. :D:

  • 1 month later...

Just returned from the Jade. I produced copies of the following:

1 x $50 non-refundable

1 x $50 non-refundable

1 x $50

1 x $100

1 x $100

On embarking the ship the three totalling $250 were posted to my account. However, I was informed that these could NOT be used in the Casino or towards tips. I also refused to give them my credit card, as I always prefer cash accounts on cruise ships.

I protested that I had been told that these could be used towards tips, which is why I booked direct with NCL and not through my TA.

After much argument, it was agreed that this could be used towards tips etc. as my reservation and contract was in September.

My $100 n-r did not appear, but I had the print-out. They e-mailed Miami on Sunday and a reply was not received until Friday - and we were disembarking on the Monday. This was finally agreed. I visited the Front Desk two or three times a day and never received an apology.

They also have the strange system for future cruise deposits, whereupon you receive an obc on the cruise you are on, rather than the future cruise. This caused another problem for me with the Front Desk as I was charged this deposit late on the last evening and no obc was posted - probably because I would be unable to use it as the shops were closed!!! I refused to pay of course and found a letter confirming this future cruise deposit among the mass of paper, including bills and letters cutting off my credit. Why they cannot give a $300 credit for cash acounts, as on other cruise lines, I cannot understand. They hold thousands of our money for many months and don't trust us for a few dollars!!

Apart from that, we had a great time.

Sorry I find this a little confusing, I purchased OBC and was told that it could be used in the casino. I know we did this last year, I prepaid my DSC. Is there any reason we cannot use our OBC to get cash in the casino? Has the policy changed?

OBC that you have paid with your real money is refundable and you can use it how you please. :)
