switching credit cards halfway through cruise......

I was wondering if you use a credit card for your onboard account can you switch to another credit card half way through the cruise.

Only one actual charge goes on your credit card at the end of the cruise so whichever card they have at the end will be charged for the entire cruise.

I wonder if that's true though. When we were on the Pearl we purchased a future cruise credit and were told it would be charged to our account. We opened our account with cash only (as we always do) and I specifically asked that it be charged to a credit card instead. I was told no problem and that's what they did. I bet if you went down part way through the cruise and told them to charge your current balance to CC #1 and then added CC #2 and removed CC #1, I bet they could do it.

I can't remember for sure but I'd say also that you can have several different card charges for your account, but only one charge per card as the actual charges are made only once at the end of the cruise but NCL updates hold made to the card several times if needed. (We were on 14 day cruise and would have liked to have had part of the account balance charged from the card before the change of the month during the cruise because of the billind period with the card but were told that it's not possible.)

We did have something like that set up last time but I got lucky in the casino in the last few days so we paid most of the account balance off with the cash from the casino so we didn't need to use the other card after all.

What does it mean to "open an account"? Is there a card you are required to give at check in that is different from the one used to book?

How does one arrange cash only?

When you check in at the port on the day of your cruise, they will want to know how you will pay for anything you buy on the ship (drinks, t-shirts, specialty dining, etc.). Once on the ship, you don't pay for things with cash as you get them. They will all be added to your "account" and you settle that account when you leave the ship on the last day. But you need to secure that capability on day one with either a credit card or with cash or with a debit card. If you choose to use a credit card, you don't have to use the same one you purchased the cruise with. In fact, I don't think they even have a record of that original credit card at the port. You need to physically give them a credit card or cash. If you use a credit card, they will capture the information from your card and you sign paperwork before you board the ship. If you use cash, I think they board you and then you have to go to the service desk to give them some amount of cash to get your account started. They will then track your use of that cash and you will need to deposit more cash if you spend more than you have given them. They track all of your purchases using a magnetic card that also serves as your room key.

I usually check on our charges every couple days to make sure there aren't any charges that aren't ours. On past cruises I have gone down to the desk and paid off charges accrued at that time on a different cc than the one I gave them at check in. I have also paid part of my bill in cash to keep them from hitting the cc. I have never had a problem.

My friend traveled with us last year and didn't have a cc. I used a low limit cc for her to check in and she went to the desk every couple days to pay for all charges incurred at the time. No charges ever hit my cc.

I suggest checking your bill occasionally just to be sure all the charges are legit. Once they charged us double for the excursions we booked. We notified the desk and they were glad to remove the incorrect charges. Never had any problems with NCL.

You can always go to guest services and pay a specific part of your account using a different card. My husband often does this as the firm pays for internet time. It is never a probelm.

I actually switched cards in the middle of the cruise. They totaled up charges up to that point and those went on one card, then the rest went on the second. This was done at the customer service desk.

You can also use the "bon Voyage" gifts forms and send yourself an onboard account credit prior to the cruise.

This will give your account a credit and all of your charges go against it.

Only once you go over that amount, will your crdit card on file be charged.

If you don't spend all that money, just go to the Guest Services the last night of your cruise, and they will give you the cash back.

Work great for some...

Heres My Question.....Theres 3 of us going on a Alaska Cruise in May on the Pearl..Theres my Mother In Law, DW and Myself....

Were all in the same Suite and My MIL Always puts down her own Credit Card right at the beginning of the cruise and all her Excursions, purchases, Drinks and Casino charges go directly to her....

My DW and I put down one card at the start also.......

My Question is?....On the last couple cruises I got money from the Casino....Was doing bad and had went through the cash I had on hand..

The DW wasnt Thrilled about this but Hey its My Cash as well....

Anyway this time I was thinking that IF I wasnt doing well in the casino and Needed Cash again...I'd put down a Seperate Credit Card thats ONLY in My Name......

Can you do this?......Would it be in the Casino or Pursers Desk?.....

Also If I Pre-Purchase Casino OBC.....How does that work?

Is there a Seperate Charge if I'm doing it before We actually cruise?...

Whats the BEST Way To Handle this?.....

HOPEFULLY I'LL BE WINNING BIG LIKE ON SOME OF MY OTHER CRUISES AND THIS WOULD BE A MOOT POINT.......:D

Thanks for Any Help or Ideas?

A couple we cruise with has him register under one c/c and she with another so they don't have c/c issues. This system may not work for you if you and your spouse don't hang out together.

Well Yes We hang out togther through out the whole cruise and She Plays in the Casino ALMOST as much As I do....:)

Guess if I ran into the need to get Extra Cash from the Casino I'll just go down to the pursers desk and have my card put in....

I'm just trying to plan ahead so I dont get that "Not Thrilled" Look at the end of the cruise when getting the final bill.....Happy Wife=Happy Life......:D

Anyone else who has advice or done this before?

The answer, from my experience, is yes. On the day we set sail on the Pearl this past December, we gave them a credit card that we weren't sure we were going to use. During the middle of the cruise we went to the desk and were able to change credit cards with no problem. At the end of the cruise, all charges were put on the card we changed to. Hope this helps.

We've switched credit cards on our most recent cruise. Mid cruise we applied for the Bank of America / NCL Mastercard. We were approved and figured why not get the 3% back in ultimate reward points to be used for OBC on our future . Plus we got a total of four dinners in LeBistro for applying for two cards.
