Room Service! Posted May 7, 2012 #26 Share Posted May 7, 2012 Okay....you are right. When I open the fridge and my last bottle of wine is empty....NOTHING irks me more....:D:D:D  Now THIS would be something to get irked about.;)
NKsDogWalker Posted May 7, 2012 #27 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I call my apartment a house all the time. Some people correct me and that annoys me. Why does it matter? Saying apartment is sometimes tongue tying so I just say "house". Boat... ship... ship... boat... whatever. LOL I say boat alot because I am afaid one time I will say Shi* ....you know ;) When I was about 7 I drew picture of a ship. Mom proudly displayed it on the fridge. My Aunt came over and admired the picture and my unfortunate spelling mistake my mother didn't notice. "Shi* Ahoy" Oops. My Aunt still talks about that picture. bobnsons Posted May 7, 2012 #28 Share Posted May 7, 2012 While in the Marines stationed aboard an LPH, we were told by the Navy that you ride on a boat to get you to a ship. While I was going through MCRD we were taught the differenct between a rifle and a gun. Seemed like a scene from a move.
cruisinbuddy Posted May 7, 2012 #29 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I also cringe and correct the person. I was told that a boat leans into a turn and a ship leans out on a turn, and it's true.
TahoeBob Posted May 7, 2012 #30 Share Posted May 7, 2012 Nothing? Really?I think some say it just in fun. Most of us know. What's the big deal? The only one I can see really being upset by this might be the captain. I could care less that the captain might be upset at this, After all I really don't give a ratz azz what the hired help thinks about the boat vs. ship argument. and that all the captain is, just another crew member whose job it is to make sure my vacation goes well. rferr Posted May 7, 2012 #33 Share Posted May 7, 2012 When I was in the Navy (back before women were on ships or in combat), the men always said they were "goin' to the boat" when their shore rotation was up. I have always thought of ships as boats since then. I promise never to say it in mixed company so as not to ruffle feathers. I'll say boat just to ruffle their feathers.... bjd2 Posted May 7, 2012 #34 Share Posted May 7, 2012 We were on a cruise on the Dream with John Heald as the CD in 2010 and someone said something about the "boat" to him. He announced over the microphone that it's not a boat, it's a ship. A boat is what you get into if the ship sinks! It was probably funnier back then, but I always think of those words when I hear someone refer to one of the ships as a boat. :p

yonder Posted May 7, 2012 #36 Share Posted May 7, 2012 Only one rule truly applies.........women will not lay down in boats that they can not stand up in!!! Not correct grammatically, but absolutely the truth!!:)
Rottweiler Puppy Posted May 7, 2012 #37 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I see so many folks call the the ships a boat.I was told by a crew member early on in my cruising history that saying this is a no no, and we cruise on ships not boats. So now every time I see/hear someone say BOAT, I cringe a little.:p Anyone else think this way? No point, just curious. I call em boats because it drives the navy guys nuts. I was in the Army and one time we did joint training with the 24th MEU Marines in Israel on the Inchon and every time we called the ship a boat they SP's would get wound up. So naturally us Army Airborne jackasses would make sure and say "boat " at every opportunity. I actually call em ships more than boat now but it depends on who is listening. My Marine father gives me the evil eye still when I say boat. Of course he is the guy who was calling the Coast Guard escort "puddle pirates" lol damn Jarhead being a meanie. Dave994 Posted May 7, 2012 #38 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I think ship and I think big, so cruise ship and large vessels. I think boat and I think pleasure craft. Don't see a lot of people taking about cruise boats :)
Tbay-eh Posted May 7, 2012 #39 Share Posted May 7, 2012 So - it is a ship not a boat - it is a cabin not a room - it is deck not a floor - in the scheme of things DOES IT REALLY MATTER ALL THAT MUCH? As long as I am sailing on it they can call it a panoe - whole new story there. Takes alot more than that to raise my hackles - I know what battles to fight and this is not one of them. Rottweiler Puppy Posted May 7, 2012 #40 Share Posted May 7, 2012 That is because the Navy is really big on tradition. The first few submarines that came out were the size of boat. I have a buddy who was on a sub and anything other than a sub he called a target.
RWolver672 Posted May 7, 2012 #41 Share Posted May 7, 2012 While I was going through MCRD we were taught the differenct between a rifle and a gun. Seemed like a scene from a move. CRUISE4JANE Posted May 7, 2012 #42 Share Posted May 7, 2012 We have a boat and call it a BOAT, but when we cruise, we call it a SHIP. I don't consider my boat at home a ship.
goldwinger88 Posted May 7, 2012 #43 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I served on ships and I called then boats. More accurately a wannabe submarine (Tin Can) cuz we spent so much time under water. And my Corpse-man did screw up my medical records something awful. Apparently I wasn't sick a day in my whole naval career. A bad day cruising is better than any good day working............ Harrier1961 Posted May 7, 2012 #44 Share Posted May 7, 2012 A ship carries a boat. A boat carries a dinghy or Coasties:D Not necessarily. Subs are referred to as boats. Andy
Universe93B Posted May 7, 2012 #45 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I don't care either way, but...........Would call this a ship or a boat? Imagine the people cringing depending on your answer :D

etwright Posted May 7, 2012 #47 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I don't care either way, but...........Would call this a ship or a boat? Imagine the people cringing depending on your answer :D I did 22 years in the Navy and I called this one both! "What ship are you on"? or when out on liberty in a port and I had too much to drink, I would 'head back to the boat"! :D
Room Service! Posted May 7, 2012 #48 Share Posted May 7, 2012 most of us use "boat" to describe a "ship" in the same way you might call a big house a "shack". We are aware of the difference... just for the record, Dave994 and daveholman (me), are two different people. "We are aware of the difference" :D
