Common courtesy?

Recommended Posts

As a smoker I respect your question. I do not book balcony cabins because I don't want to bother other people who might not be as nice as you by tellling me that the smoke is bothering me. Some people have no tact when it comes to that issue and telling not asking a person who does smoke to put it out. LOL! I only utilize the smoking areas. Plus having to trek all the way from my cabin to the smoking areas makes me smoke less. I try and be a respectful smoker.

If you smoke on your balcony and have never had a problem, you will if your next balcony cabin is next to mine, and I or my family member has to inhale 2nd hand smoke from one of your lung cancer sticks, and you refuse to stop killing us.

Allowed or not, I don't appreciate anyone putting the health of me or my family at risk. We have a right to breathe smoke-free air, and I will not allow anyone to infringe on that.

And exactly what do you propose to do? A smoker that may respond nicely to a polite request is likely to respond nicely if the request is more of a demand and thus keep on smoking.

i feel llike every other thread is about smoking and balconies :p

both my husband and i smoke. we book balconies for that reason. i have never been asked by neighbors to not smoke...in fact, ive only noticed my neighbors on the balcony the same time as us once-and they were also smoking.

in regards to the smoke- i get it that people arent happy to be around it. but smoking is allowed on the balcony i paid for. i am going to use that advantage. if you dont like it, wait 5 minutes and ill be done. i normally only have 1 or 2 while im in the room and thats usually morning when i wake up, before dinner, and late at night...other than that im in public areas. but im sorry, i will not put out a cigarette because someone asked me. i would however, if i was planning on smoking 2 just finish the 1 and be done with it.

as for the ashes flicking to other balconies- ive never had that happen. i sit in the chair against the wall and flick the ashes into the ashtray. once in a while a flicker may escape and then it hits the balcony divider.

My wife & I smoked for 3 decades. We are now 26 months nicotine free.

I gotta admit, the smell is terrible to us now.

However I find it more of an issue having to avoid the casino on a cruise ship than

the balcony smoke aspect. Having to go one deck above or below instead of through, and wait

for a smoke-free night in order to use / enjoy the casino.

In regards to the balcony; if my neighbor lights up & it bothers me, I simply

go inside for a couple minutes. Its no big deal. If the wind takes it right away,

then we both are in a win, win situation.

The smoke can sometimes linger for a short time, even traveling at 20 knots.

It can indeed get temporally trapped. Still, not a huge issue.

A smoker has every right to smoke on their balcony, and I know that

when booking my stateroom.

Of course there are various scenario's that can arise between a smoker & non-smoker.

And that is where common courtesy could come into play. Hopefully along

with polite open communication so the situation can be handled properly

and maturely.

Adapt, move forward, and enjoy what little time you have on vacation, and in life; which is indeed too short..

Have a terrific day!:)

I smoke and if our neighbor pokes his head around the partition and asks politely, then I will be fine putting my cigarette out until they go inside. They don't have to beg or go into long winded explanations. A simple "Would you mind.....?" and a "Please" or "Thank you" will do.

If that said neighbor gets ugly or does that fake cough/hacking thing without talking to me, I will not put my cigarette out until it's finished.

If I'm up on deck, in an authorized smoking section, you're on your own to move out of the path of my smoke but I will be friendly about telling you so.

When I am on my balcony, I make a point of asking my neighbors if they mind me smoking.

If they do mind, I tell them if they rap on the balcony divider, I will put it out, no problems.

I figure they should be able to enjoy their balcony also.

Wow! VERY very nice & considerate..wouldn't mind having you on a balcony next to us! Thanks just for saying that!

If told by my neighbour that my smoke was bothering them I would butt out. Often I will not even lite up if I think it will bother someone near me. Common courtesy and politeness goes a long way on both sides. :)

I was just about to type the exact same thing about politeness. It goes both ways. You have the rude and obnoxious smokers who don't care if it bothers anyone, toss their butts overboard, light up in non-smoking areas, etc.

Then you have the ones like we had one one cruise.....

Dh lights a smoke on the balcony the first day and within 3 seconds - next door the man starts cussing about the $%!@% smokers and how another cruise would be RUINED due to having smoking neighbors. His language alone didn't help the "air pollution" lol. Wife chimes in about how awful their cruise was going to be and she was going to go to the casino since she couldn't enjoy her balcony she paid for due to the nasty smokers.

At the point my DH and I couldn't help but laugh - if the smoke bothers you that much in the open air on a moving ship - perhaps the casino isn't the best place for you.

The next day we were sitting outside and my husband was just playing with the lighter (so it would make that little noise lighting) but never lighting a cigarette. The neighbors would start coughing loudly every time he flicked the lighter - no cigarette even lit. :p Kind of became his way of having fun on the balcony the rest of the cruise. Play with the lighter and listen to the over-exaggerated coughs start when there was no smoke.

The point of this is that a polite introduction the first day and an "I'm sorry, I know you are allowed to smoke on your balcony but we are really sensitive" would have gone a long way towards us working out an agreement where they could let us know when they were out there and also give us a few minutes if we did want to smoke (we aren't by any means chain smokers out there.)

Well, you have several choices.... a spa cabin, an ocean view cabin, an inside cabin or another cruise line. Take your pick!

While I am a non-smoker, I have NO problems with smokers who do so in the designated areas. They have as much right to be there as anyone and if Carnival allows them to smoke there, so be it and I will deal with it. But I will ask people be considerate enough not blow the smoke in my direction if possible.

Good luck with that attitude!

and

just detecting the smell of smoke in an adjacent area does not equal inhaling 2nd hand smoke

When I first scanned this post, I had a vision. If you watch AGT you will know what I mean.

"If I am out on the balcony having a toke,

Tell me if you are bothered by the smoke.

You may like to go out to enjoy the air,

but don't be mean like a bear.

I like to sit and watch the sea,

just don't tell me to go climb a tree"

Whatcha going to do, whatcha going to do.....whatcha going to do, watcha going to do.?

Is this a Granny G reference?

You put the health of your family at risk everyday!! Driving in a car, eating food bought from somewhere other than your own garden and farm. Going to the doctor and sitting in a waiting room. Using a public restroom. walking across the street. Asking a smoker smoking in a designated smoking area to quit.

Just detecting smoke doesn't mean you are being harmed. Have you ever breathed the air in a large city? That's more harmful than 30 minutes of sitting on a balcony and having a waft of smoke occasionally. Grow up and educate yourself to the issues around you and don't take what you hear on CNNmsnbctodayshowgoodmorningamerica at their face value. Even the top scientist can't agree on things and they know a heck of a lot more than the average person.

I don't smoke and every time I am around smoking my head clogs up and my throat hurts. I am being treated for asthma. I take an inhaler with me.

I try to avoid smoking at all costs.

I think if I had a balcony next to me and it was non stop smoking I would try to be annoying back. Like singing real loud, or spraying perfume...or better yet let my kids fight it out oin the balcaony... just kidding. I have never done any of these because if the smoke bothers me I go insdie and wait it out. BUT if it was non stop I would say something nicely first.

If my neighbor pokes their heads around the partition, they might get more than they bargained for..................smoke or no smoke - I would be more offended by the interruption of privacy (YIKES)!

Our neighbors smoked. We went inside. I didn't think we had any right to expect them not to smoke. And yes, the smoke does drift over onto the neighbors balcony.

Why not? Many laws today are now aimed at protecting the health of those that do not want to partake in a dangerous health act. Yes they do have the right to smoke, but most laws are aimed at also telling them they don't have the right to endanger others health. Cruise ships need to just ban smoking altogether except in small smoking areas away from others.

And until they do smokers have the right to smoke on their balcony, whether we non-smokers like it or not (but a lot of smokers will be accomodating as long as they are approached politely).

enjoy your sailboat!

more "stuff" comes out of that whale tail in a minute than can be smoked on board in years.

This makes me laugh. I am not a smoker but DH is and he smokes on our balcony at will on every cruise we take. We have never had anyone complain that it bothered. If you were in the cabin next to us what exactly do you think you can do to stop him? It's just hilarious to me picturing a scenario where you could do anything to prevent him.

Carnival did have a non-smoking ship for the longest time. It was called The Paradise.

I failed miserably.

most balconies are a designated smoking area.

the only place you could ask someone politely not to smoke is a designated non smoking area.

I am a non smoker. I agree and disagree with this comment. I can always ask them not to..BUT..I can't get upset if they refuse unless we are in a designated non smoking area. I don't see the issue with asking. But I don't see the issue with them saying no either. That being said. I have had a balcony twice and was only once bothered by someone smoking on a balcony around me. We weren't moving..and I think there know that there were several people smoking on one of the balconies and others were smoking on other balconies around us. But it was that one day that bothered me..it was embarkation day and it didn't bother me the rest of the cruise.

So I honestly don't see myself ever asking someone not to smoke on their balcony.
