Rare Banditswife Posted May 23, 2012 #101 Share Posted May 23, 2012 I do agree that all cruiselines could come up with a better solution for everyone. Like having certain sections of cabins be designated smoking, all others non smoking. IMHO having 1 complete side non & the other smoking wouldn't work. Pax have preferences of port/ starboard sides. So if they made just a certain section of the cabins on both sides smoking, then everyone would be happy. They could allow smoking in those cabins & there'd be less pax smoking on balconies. You would know before you booked whether you were near the smoking section or not. Carnival did try a totally smoke free cruise, it failed, could not keep the ship full. We do try to be considerate of others, but also wish them to be considerate of us too. If we are in a smoking allowed area, please don't ask us to put it out. We have so few public areas to smoke, let us enjoy what we have. You can enjoy the other 95% non smoking ship.

momof4boys Posted May 23, 2012 #103 Share Posted May 23, 2012 Carnival did have a non-smoking ship for the longest time. It was called The Paradise. I failed miserably. It really wasn't as long as that......in fact that ship was a smoking ship by the time I started sailing in 2005. In those few short years....a huge tide has turned. I suspect that today...it would be much more successful.
elgato2 Posted May 23, 2012 #104 Share Posted May 23, 2012 Admit I just read the first and last pages of this thread...but must agree with several posters who stated that there are so FEW areas that smoking is allowed..it is frustrating to us smokers.... Yes..I try to be considerate of non-smokers but we book CCL primarily so we CAN smoke on our balcony with our morning coffee..and at night before bed...If someone next to me complained I'm afraid I would have to try to reach a compromise..but I WOULD NOT give up smoking out there..I'd try to pay attention to when they were out there and not smoke then... But, that said..we also try to get a balcony as far aft as possible cause the smoke seems to blow down-wind...offends less people that way! bplazo Posted May 23, 2012 #105 Share Posted May 23, 2012 If you smoke on your balcony and have never had a problem, you will if your next balcony cabin is next to mine, and I or my family member has to inhale 2nd hand smoke from one of your lung cancer sticks, and you refuse to stop killing us. Allowed or not, I don't appreciate anyone putting the health of me or my family at risk. We have a right to breathe smoke-free air, and I will not allow anyone to infringe on that. Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk 2 I suggest that you get an inside cabin or a cruiseline that does not allow smoking on the balconies. Just curious, what are you going to do if someone does smoke?

dwaterhouse Posted May 23, 2012 #107 Share Posted May 23, 2012 I am a non smoker... Hubby is a smoker as of our last cruise ... We have always cruised balcony or suite, and have enjoyed the balcony....Last cruise was the 1st time he smoked on the balcony and had me grossed out with the smell... I didn't get to use it at all and of course I said something about it and it caused a big smoking -non debate and said I could go anywhere on the ship to enjoy the water...and he can only go certain places to smoke.... I conceded for that cruise. Let's just say I will get the last word on this one... Cause I booked an Inside room .... My thoughts are if I can't enjoy it... Either will he..lol

I am a nonsmoker, but several of my family, including my Mom smoke, and should you or anyone else get nasty with her for smoking on her balcony, its gonna get real ugly real fast when i find out about it. You know going forward that smoking is allowed on the balconies,so no you dont have the right to cause a problem with someone doing what is allowed. tikimon Posted May 23, 2012 #109 Share Posted May 23, 2012 Well this is a debate that will never come to an end or compromise as long as ciggs are manufactured and sold and Carnival remains with the policy that they now have in place. Bottom line is it dosen't matter which side you are on in this issue. Carnival own's the ships we all choose to sail on and they alone set their own rules and guidelines for what we as their guests are allowed to do or not to do. Yes we can come on this board and start another thread about smoking every week and let it continue until it gets ugly and then goes POOF. But until Carnival decides to change their policies all the discussion in the the world is a moot point. If you or I don't agree with the stated policies of a certain cruiseline then we have the liberty to go elsewhere where their policies suit us better. Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk 2 Smoking is allowed on the balconies. When booking a cruise, I'm sure you're aware of that. Of course, it's your choice as to which cabin you book. However, as a non-smoker who is concerned about second-hand smoke, and knowing that smoking is allowed on the balconies, if you choose to book a cabin with a balcony, then you really have no right to complain if one of your neighbors is a smoker. It's the same when someone books a cabin directly above or below the dance lounge on a ship, knowing there will be loud music and noise, but bitches about it anyway. Of course you have the right to breathe smoke-free air, but when you book a balcony cabin, and you have a neighbor that smokes, it is YOUR choice that puts your health and that of your family at risk. Your smoking neighbor is not breaking any law, nor intentionally putting his/her neighbors' health at risk. He/she is smoking on the balcony because it is one of the very few places where it is allowed on the ship (by the cruise line). So even though you may not like it, you really have no right to get upset about it.
bplazo Posted May 24, 2012 #112 Share Posted May 24, 2012 Threat of gas attack (post #83). Thanks, I must have missed that! Jana60 Posted May 24, 2012 #114 Share Posted May 24, 2012 In fact I'd go as far as saying if someone ever acted in this manner to my husband catching a smoke on the balcony, then I would have no choice but to invite every smoker I can find on the cruise to our balcony daily for drinks :D;) I'm a non-smoker and yet if I heard someone behaving so childishly, I would have to invite every smoker I could find to my balcony! I would HOPE but would NOT expect that if I explained to a chain smoker that I am allergic and asked if we could alternate a little on balcony time that they might, I repeat MIGHT agree but it would be their decision as it IS a designated smoking area and they DO have the right to smoke there. Gypsywych Posted May 24, 2012 #115 Share Posted May 24, 2012 I smoke and if our neighbor pokes his head around the partition and asks politely, If my neighbor pokes their heads around the partition, they might get more than they bargained for..................smoke or no smoke - I would be more offended by the interruption of privacy (YIKES)! I was told that the reason the non-smoking ship failed was not because it did not sail full but because they discovered that smokers spent more money in the bars and Casino than non-smokers. I'm not sure why that would be (I don't smoke and I make pretty large contributions to the bars and Casino) but that is what I was told.

beachbum53 Posted May 24, 2012 #120 Share Posted May 24, 2012 [/img] We were recently on the Liberty. Smoking is allowed on deck 10, Starboard side. I took this photo on the last day of our cruise. When I saw this, I wasn't quite sure what to think. It struck me as rather odd. My guess is that a non-smoking passenger wanted to use one of the lounge chairs on deck 10 (in the smoking area), and took it upon him/herself to put the sign there in an attempt to have a smoke-free area for sunbathing. I don't know if the sign is still there, or if a crew member saw it and put it back wherever it came from.

vwrestler171 Posted May 24, 2012 #123 Share Posted May 24, 2012 I don't smoke, but I feel that if a smoker wants to smoke on their balcony, then they have as much right to enjoy their balcony as much as I do. The difference is that I can understand that they have limited areas that they can smoke in and I won't interfere in their space. If I don't like it, there are plenty of other spaces that I can go to enjoy the ocean. Smoke doesn't bother me, but the way some people get so adamant about not having to breathe second hand smoke, they act like they are all that matters. It seems that they are for treating everyone equally as long as they agree with them.

Its been my experience that the people who are most offended by smoke are former smokers. I've got quite a few friend & co-workers who used to smoke. They always seem to be the first ones to make rude comments about smokers. If people are smoking on a ship moving 18-20 knots they would really have to try hard to get smoke into a nearby balcony. Let smoke don't be upset that you are not smoking.
