One More Reminder - Check for DNS Virus

Recommended Posts

I didn't look very hard to see if this has been posted, but here it is (either for the first time or again! :)

As most of you may know, that horrific DNS virus is still out there and it's so easy to check. The US has set up a website through the FBI to see if your computer has been infected.

Here is the site: http://www.dns-ok.us/

If you go to that site, you will either see a big green rectangle with IP in the middle. That meanneed to get the DAs you are OK!

If you go to that site, and see a red rectangle, then you have the malware on your computer. In order to fix this, you need to get the DNS MALWARE off your computer before tomorrow morning or you will lose your computer and router tomorrow.

Here is/are some articles for you to find out how to delete the malware!

Without doubting this posters honesty be very careful with linking to websites offering warnings, scans or cures for virusus. They can often be sites that will actually download a virus or malware to your computer whilst they perpetrate to be scanning and checking your computer.

Again, I am not saying that this is not an honest link but please be careful. If concerned about virusus etc. get a good quality antivirus / Internet security type program.

I agree, but this one is OK. When I first saw the URL with .us rather than .gov I was suspicious, so I first checked it out on Google and found several endorsements and no warnings about it. Furthermore, if you go to http://www.fbi.gov you will find the link

https://forms.fbi.gov/check-to-see-if-your-computer-is-using-rogue-DNS which has a link to http://www.dns-ok.us

What happens if your computer is turned off tomorrow but it is infected? We are out of town and will not return for another 10 days. Can we expect when we go home and turn on our desktops that everything will be wiped off the computer?

If it is infected - I would say yes:eek: If you don't have time to check (and even then there could be some risk) - I would make sure I have everything uptodate and backed up. Best bet IMO - which reminds me - I better get at it!

You wil not be able to access the internet and you will have to have the malware cleaned off your computer before you will be able to go on again. If can not access the internet when you get home contact your service provider and they will help you clean the virus off your computer or walk you through how to do it. This will not wipe out anything on your computer.

Thank you, Chris. That's a whole lot better than finding everything wiped off one's computer if it is infected.

There are very few infected computers. About 50,000 in the US. Odds are remote. Of course you don't want to be one of those and the test can't hurt but if that site turns green that does not mean you are not infected. Your router or ISP can mask the result.

No. You just have to contact your internet agency. It's not as big of a deal as the news (and apparently the FBI) made it out to be. What happened was that the server that the FBI had set up was shut down today.

The virus has been out there for over a year and if you were infected, it could have happened over a year ago.

From what I understand, you will not lose everything, but you will get a blank screen and be unable to get onto your computer until you contact your internet agency.

Enjoy your vacation and don't worry! :D

Sometimes a Shady Lady just wants to be helpful! :D Honestly! :p

(Good heads up, though, for those not aware of the "link" issue.)

No, you just can't get onto the internet - anything you do off-line is unaffected. It's like you've turned off your modem.

DNS is the Domain Name System which translates URLs like http://boards.cruisecritic.com into IP addresses.

Thanks! I meant onto the internet....not onto your computer! We use those terms interchangeably in our home! :D
