Newark, NJ to Radio City Music Hall

We are staying at the Wyndham Garden in Newark day before cruise. (driving there)

We'd like to go to see the Rockettes holiday show, the Empire State Bldg & try to get to Katz's Deli.

The Empire State Bldg & Katz's are open really late, and thinking of doing the 7pm Radio City Music Hall show, and the other 2 afterwards.

Can anyone recommend transportation from Hotel to activities and back to hotel?

DH refuses to drive in NY and mobility is an issue with walking more than a block or so. We are parking at hotel for the week, and taking some service into the cruise port on Sunday.

Thanks for the info! :)

Mobility issues will be the problem. Public transportation is going to require some walking. Are you willing to spend money on cabs or car services to do this. If so,how much money?

Take a look at a New York map. Radio City is at 6th Ave and 50th St. The Empire State is at 34th and 5th, and Katz's is on the lower east side on Houston St.

I'm thinking cab to Newark Penn Station, train to New York Penn Station, cab to Radio City, cab to Katz's, cab to Empire State, cab to Penn Station, train to Newark and cab back to the hotel.

Would you consider the Carnegie Deli in midtown instead of Katz's? That way you would be staying in the same general area to minimize your cab fares.

You really do not want to park at the Wyndham garden for a week....that hotel is not the best in the area...face it, the area around EWR is an urban area...but the Wyndham is in the area that is more easily accessible to questionable characters...no WAY would i suggest parking there...i have BEEN in that hotel and while it isn't bad...the parking area stinks..and it is VERY hard to find.

Check one of the hotels on Glimcher Realty way....look at a park & fly package...some of them are charging to park now...

ALSO look at stay123.com and/or trinity reservations. com...see if you can get the fairfield inn or country inn through those sites....

trust me...MUCH safer parking...

Thank you so much for advice! DH found a NY Taxi calculator..should give an idea of $. :-) Carnegie is an option, I guess. Never heard of it, tho. ;)

I'm glad Meg mentioned the hotel as well. Spend a little extra money and go to Country Inns for your date.

Google the Carnegie Deli - it's close to Radio City and is a midtown legend. I love Katz's, but it is really out of the way. Cab fare to Newark Penn Station should be about $25 each way and the train fare is $5. If you're seniors, the fare is $2.25. If you stay in the miton area, cab fares will be affordable.

You are welcome..

As for changing...phone or email them. that is why 99% of the time i book direct....

Was it prepaid? the hotel would be ok if perhaps you flew in, the airline cancelled your flight and they put you up there....not so great to book outright.

See what else they offer....a little extra investment would be a good thing

For Radio City, there is a "deal" for the 9:30 pm show if you're interested....less $$$:

Have a great trip!

That is a great deal. I did the tour and show 4 years ago. Even then, it was $129.00 for an orchestra seat. $69-89 is an absolutely fantastic price.

We definitely will! Thanks!

(and the country inn & suites has "secured parking lot" :-) but..it's not free..cost was $70 for the week. Not too bad!

It is fenced...gated and there is an Elizabeth PD car that patrols all the hotel lots ... At least on weekends.....

You should be fine...

I just wanted to report back that all went well - Thank you to all who gave such great advice!:)

We stayed at the Country Inn & Suites in Elizabeth, NJ. Hotel was fine - easy to get to (however, I do not recommend getting there on Black Friday again! The Garden Mall is across the street and traffic was brutal!)

They are building another hotel across the street, as well. Here is a photo (sorry for quality, but window was dirty - this is the best shot..) Room was okay, clean and tidy. We stayed 2 nights. Parked our car in the fenced, gated lot for the week. We were charged $70. for the week's parking. Cheaper than the pier parking! There was breakfast bar included. That place was a zoo! Not enough seating. Grabbed plates and took back to room to enjoy. Free internet, as well - it's not WiFi, there is a plug on the desk. There is also fridge & microwave in room.

We used Dial 7 for our car service. Great choice! They always sent a dark Lincoln Towncar (I think?). Drivers were personable. Car was clean. They were always early! One driver told us they try to plan on arriving 20-30 minutes early, to take into account any traffic - except for Manhattan, which they only plan on arriving 5 min early, due to Police making them move! Great service - no complaints!

next post - Manhattan

We took Dial 7 into Manhattan for the Rockettes show. We arrived very early. Grabbed a hotdog/pretzel from street vendor and sat on a wall waiting. Nice shot of ornaments. Great spot for people watching.

My husband was welcomed to NYC by a passing bird that left a calling card (bird poop) on his collar! LOL It was funny - not to him, of course. That bird had great aim! LOL

We were kitty-corner from Radio City Music Hall, corner of Avenue of the Americas & 50th. Some guy was posing as Statue of Liberty for tips.

Rockettes!

We got in early and sat and people watched some more. We looked around the place. Glad we had snack outside – snacks were very expensive inside! No flash photography inside, but we got some photos of the show without flash.

The show was fantastic! The seats were comfortable, we had plenty of leg room. This was our first time here and we really enjoyed the show. One thing we really liked, was the fact that it was truly a “Christmas Show” – complete with traditional Christmas carols and nativity scene. This was not a “politically correct holiday or seasonal” show. We LOVED it! J

After the show as we were wandering out, we came across the NCL Breakaway replica. PCC Adam was attending the ‘booth’ and we had a nice chat with him.

We then went outside and down the street a little bit away from the crowd, to ‘hail a cab’. We were going to Carnegie Deli – but we didn’t’ have address. Cabbie didn’t know where it was, either. So, we called my son and had him look up the address for us. Cell phones are great! We got to the Deli and there was a HUGE line waiting to get in. (854 7th Avenue New York, NY)

So, there was another Deli right next door and the place was pretty quiet. We decided to go there, instead. Premier Deli – I had traditional Hot Pastrami on Rye – it was great! We had a nice little table to sit at. We wondered why there weren’t more people there?! What did we not know? It worked fine for us and we did not get sick! LOL

We then took another cab to the Empire State Building. As we got out of the cab, a couple of guys assisted us with getting tickets. Their credit card reader wasn’t working, so one guy escorted us inside – through the employee entrance to avoid all the lines to get in. That was nice – but a LOT of walking!! We got the package deal that included the ‘sky ride’ – which was a ‘motion movie type’ thing. Kevin Bacon narrated a helicopter ride around NYC. It was ok. We then used our ‘express pass’ and had a ‘shorter line’ and went to the top. WOW! Soo crowded you could hardly find a place to stand! We didn’t stay up long. Mark took a few photos and we headed back down. Had a walk to back to the gift shop where we saw tee shirts on sale. Unfortunately, the child sizes were not on sale! Oh well. We had a soda from a machine and sat on the bench for awhile to rest. We had some time to kill.

We were getting picked up by Dial 7 @ 7pm across the street at McDonalds. So we wandered over there and went in to have a drink while waiting. When it was about time, we went outside to wait. Ride back uneventful. We had a lot of people watching time, that Mark enjoyed.

You can get to the SOL from Liberty State Park in NJ. No need to go all the way into NYC. Would you have the whole day or are you trying to squeeze this trip in before sailing the same day?

We would have the whole day! :)
